Free MustangPE & Free Plugins For True Image Home 2011-2013 & Disk Director 11 Home

Paul:
Just finished testing your recommendation. After booting the ISO, I confirmed that shfolder.dll was included at X:\Windows\System32\. Unfortunately, none of the symptoms changed. To rule out the physical PC that I was using for testing, I also tried booting the ISO on a desktop PC, and it exhibits the exact same problems.
On the bright side, I had forgotten to test WinPE 4.0 to see if it had pen and touch support enabled, and it does. Even BS Explorer can be navigated by pen or touch on a tablet PC, but the touch keyboard isn't enabled (it is in Microsoft's Win8 RE).
Here's a tip for others reading this thread. File managers like A43 cannot display hidden files or folders in WinPE unless you add this entry to the WinPE registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced "ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001. I put a regadd command in the build to do this automatically. You can do this several ways but one of the easiest is to add the command to winpeshl.ini before building. Winpeshl.ini is located in the build folder MustangPEBuilder_2_ADK. Here's a copy of the edited file:
[LaunchApps]
"SetRes h1024 v768 b32"
wpeinit.exe
AutoRun.cmd
"reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced /v ShowSuperHidden /t REG_DWORD /d 00000001"
"%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\BSExplorer\explorer.exe"
For now I think I'm going to have to stick with WinPE3.0 builds. I have a good one with TI 2011 that I've been using for a couple of years now. Thanks for the suggestions, Paul. I don't know why I'm not having any luck but it seems that it's something that I'm doing wrong.

Mark,
Sorry to hear it didn't work.
On the bright side, I've modified the A43 plugin in both the WAIK and ADK versions of MustangPEBuilder 2.0 to change the default values of "Hidden", "HideFileExt" and "ShowSuperHidden" in the WinPE registry. You should now see all files with their file extensions in the A43 Utility. Just download a new version of MustangPEBuilder to get the changes. Only the A43 plugin will be changed. You can see the registry entries in A43Utility.au3. Just open the file with Notepad.exe if you don't have AutoIt3 installed on your system.

I'd like to see if we can make a WinPE 4.0 32 bit version boot on a system with UEFI/Secure Boot enabled. I just don't have the hardware to run any tests so I need some help.
Would someone using MustangPE add two Microsoft ADK winpe packages to the build. Do so as follows:
In the Advanced Options page of MustangPE click the edit button next to Add Packages. Copy and paste this text to AddPackages.ini and save the changes:
If building from a 32 bit system:
package1=C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\WinPE_OCs\WinPE-WMI.cab
package2=C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\WinPE_OCs\WinPE-SecureStartup.cab
If building from a 64 bit system:
package1=C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\WinPE_OCs\WinPE-WMI.cab
package2=C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\WinPE_OCs\WinPE-SecureStartup.cab
Then create the ISO and test on your system with Secure Boot enabled.

Paul:
That was a good idea to include the registry settings for showing all files and extensions - thanks for changing the A43 plugin to do this automatically. It works like it should.
I did a build today using WinPE 3.0 and the WAIK, TI2013 w/PlusPack, DD 11, A43, and Opera and everything worked perfectly with none of the problems exhibited in the WinPE 4.0 build.
I tried six ways from Sunday to get a good build using WinPE 4.0 from the ADK but I can't get rid of the right-click memory exceptions in A43 or the lack of the ability to browse in TI 2013 dialogs. So I'll use the WinPE 3.0 build.
Wish I had a machine with UEFI and Secure Boot to help you test Secure Boot. Maybe Pat L can help.

A new version of MustangPEBuilder ADK has been uploaded. A new feature has been added. It will now create a USB flash drive in addition to creating an ISO file. This feature is only available with the ADK version and not the WAIK version. You just need to click the Advanced Options button and select a drive letter for your USB flash drive from the drop down list. When you run MustangPEBuilder you will see a message box pop up if you have selected a USB drive letter. This message box warns you that the USB drive at the drive letter you have selected will be formatted. If you don't want it formatted, just click the No button to skip creating a USB flash drive.
Edited 1/28/2013 for content of USB message box for version uploaded 1/28/2013.

Thanks for your work. Much appreciated.

I have spent a lot of time researching and trying to build the WinPE boot disk for Acronis TI 2012 Home.
Running Windows 7 64bit, Purchased and registered Acronis TI 2012 Home
From what I can read I don't need the Plus pack for this?
Downloaded the Bart PE plugin.
http://www.mechrest.com/plugins/MustangPEBuilder/MustangPEBuilderADK.htm
Have installed the ADK and Waik after reading again on forums.
I can run other applications that are plugins preset like the a43 File Management utility
I can make a USB or DVD and both come up with True Image but you can't launch it from the WinPE environment from the desktop or start menu.
I have been reading up on this for about 6 hours trying to understand the WinPE process.
My screen looks the same as the website but it looks like Windows 8 is being used where I am using Windows 7, is that a problem.
I have looked at http://www.macrium.com/ which is able create within the app a WinPE 4.0 without all the hassle but I like Acronis Better (not sure why Acronis don't have this feature).
I just want to be able to recover Windows 8 UEFI drives and settle on a solution that is tested and reliable. I have three new computers to setup and wanted to backup images while installing applications so I can go back in time if needed. I can't work out why I am having so many problems understanding this.
Any help appreciated.

Ian,
I will test with your setup and let you know the results.

Ian,
I tested with your setup. It didn't work. There were no hard drive visible in WinPE. The problem is being caused by the Acronis driver snapman.sys. The version of snapman.sys supplied by Acronis in the BartPE Media Add-on for TIHome 2012 build 7133 is not correct. It is version 3.10.0.546. This version is not working in WinPE 3.0 or 4.0. In the Plus Pack for TIHome 2012 build 7133 they supplied snapman.sys version 4.2.0.668. This version is working properly.
You can fix the problem by replacing snapman.sys in the BartPE\Files\Drivers folder with version 4.2.0.668. You will need to use the 32 bit version of snapman.sys. You can't take it from your 64 bit system. You will need to install TIHome 2012 on a 32 bit system to get the proper file. Then you will find the file in the Windows\System32\Drivers folder.
Let me be clear. This problem is not being caused by MustangPE. It is a mistake by Acronis.

Mustang,
Well Thanks for the reply, it was very fast and you are now giving your script away, I went to bed after positing at 4am here and made a mistake with my post.
It is TIHome 2013 not 2012 as I wrote.
The version of snapman.sys on my computer is 4.4.0.159
Can you check that you please if it is not hard. I wonder how many people install backup and find when they come to do a restore and it won't work. I wanted to make sure it worked and build the disk before disaster, it is hard enough getting people doing backups.
I wonder why Acronis don't bother doing a proper WinPE 4 with their plus pack or do they. I am more than happy to pay to get this done as easily as possible. I still need to work out how to add drivers, something else that macrium seem to do very well right from in their application. The main reason staying with Acronis as I have been with them for many years now. I don't need all the extras, just System disk backup and restore that is easy for people to use. For file backup I use CrashPlan to the cloud an network PC's
Any help appreciated. I have spent so long on this and not understanding so if you say the download for 2013 is right to go then I am happy. I thought I had to pay for 3 licence upgrade of 2013 as from what I could see only 2013 is guaranteed with Windows 8.
What do you get with the plus pack that you don't get with BartPE 2?
Forgot to add the BartPE boot disk Acronis does not start or respond, you seem to think as I read it that that application runs but does not see disks, just clarifying the problem.
Cheers.

Ian,
I watched your video. It's obvious you didn't do this properly. You need to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\Media Add-on\BartPE where you will find a file called WinPE.zip. You need to unzip this file to the BartPE folder. After it is unzipped, you need to see 3 files in the BartPE folder stating with acronis and two subfolders named Files and IScsi. The Files folder should have all the True Image program files that work in WinPE. The Drivers folder will have 3 files including snapman.sys (the 32 bit version) and a subfolder named Micosoft.VC80.CRT containing a manifest file and 3 dll's. This folder is missing from your WinPE and that is causing the side by side error when starting TI.
After you unzip WinPE.zip you will also need to edit TIHome2013.ini in the C:\MustangPEBuilder_ADK\Plugins\TIHome2013 folder. The path needs to be changed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\Media Add-on\BartPE\Files. Then rebuild the ISO with MustangPEBuilder.
You should strongly consider buying the Plus Pack option for TIHome 2013 to get the option to use Universal Restore for recovering to new hardware. You would also be able to build a WinPE 3.0 CD directly with the WAIK installed in your system. Acronis just didn't add the ability to build a WinPE 4.0 CD using the ADK. They say it will be in the next release of TIHome 2013.
I could also see from your video there are no hard drives visible in your WinPE. If after following the above instructions your WinPE still does not see any hard drives, you will need to add the drivers for the HDD controller in your system. You just need to provide the path to the proper driver in C:\MustangPEBuilder_ADK\AddDrivers.ini. The driver needs to be in the form of an inf file not an exe file.

Hi Paul
Appreciate the advice and software very much.
Yes it was obvious I didn't know what I was doing, it was not for the lack of trying.
Some of the above was not in any of the instructions I could find online or in the readme.txt
I am fairly computer literate but this has been quite hard for me. Some things you might find simple may be skipped in the documentation or different wording like the location of the BartPE folder, I had it where the instructions said .
It is working now, drives are visible but I need to work out Network drivers as net use utility fails. It is a long process to learn for me but it is obvious you know a huge amount about WinPE and Acronis. Is there a reason that there is not a Windows browser but only FTP or does that get fixed when I work out how to install the network drivers.
I now have Plus Pack, I did not realise it was needed as I thought it just made the WinPE 3 boot.
I am happy to PayPal you some money for this help if you send me your address.
Cheers

Ian,
Sorry if my comment seemed a little harsh. I was a little annoyed because I spent 3 hours yesterday setting up and testing a system with Windows 7 and TIHome 2012 only to find out you had TIHome 2013 on your system. I think I was more annoyed with Acronis than I was at you. It took some time to figure out their snapman error.
Yes, there is a learning curve here. Glad you got it to work. After you get the network adapter driver installed you you can use PENetCfg to map the drive. It has been included in the latest upload of MustangPE.
No need for any payment, but thanks for the offer.

Paul,
Fair enough, Acronis does have a bit of history for things that don't quite work and bugs they know about but never or take forever to fix. Yeah the 2012 mistake was made after very hot weather here in Australia and not enough sleep for nearly 2 weeks and posting at 4 am. I didn't expect you to spend so much time on it. Obviously the video was helpful as you could see exactly what I was looking at. on the plus side anyone trying 2012 will have a fix now.
Thank you very much for all you efforts not just now but over the years your name keeps cropping up on the Internet when looking at issues with Acronis.
By the way the Mustang photo that shows up when loading WinPE is very great and I just found you website, nice work. I can see you have a high attention to detail.
Cheers

Paul, the "Addons" for True Image Home 2012 Build 7133 do have the correct snapman.sys. Could you have an old download of the Addons? For some reason, they don't include the build number in the download, and it'd be easy to use an older build by mistake.
Regards,
Paul Adrian.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info.
My download of TIHome build 7133 is old. I have it on a CD that was downloaded on 7/23/12. That was 11 days after the release of build 7133. I make a habit of burning TI to CD and writing the build number and date of download on the disk. Apparently, they fixed the problem sometime after 7/23/12. I can't test the current version of the add on easily because I blew my test system away.

Hi Paul,
I am not able to use PENetCfg to map the drive I get a message like discussed below.
http://reboot.pro/topic/14092-cannot-start-tcpipreg-service/
I have tried on several computers and Understand the point of WinPE 4.0 is it has most drivers but may be wrong. Windows 8 recognised all drivers in my computers so I assume the same would be for this WinPE 4.0 Environment.
I decided to try and understand how to install a driver just in case but I don't understand what is required. I unzipped the 32 bit driver from Ausrock site put it in the directory C:\MustangPEBuilder_2_ADK\Drivers\Net\Broadcom32 as that seemed to be the suggestion. I don't see any drivers as it has a setup file, cab file and other stuff that looks like needing to be installed and I doubt I would have set it up right.
This whole building your own WinPE boot disk seems to be trial and error. There is no guide to this is exactly what you need to do to acheive this.
I know you put in a lot of work but I am thinking an imaging software product that supports creating a WinPE 4.0 USB out of the box might be easier.
There are lots of people with lots of questions like me with often no results in bootdisk forums. I think Acronis should have just done the work for Windows 8 well before it's release like others have done, it is not like Windows 8 has suddenly sneaked up on us. Frustrated about Acronis not you. The amount of learning required to do this is well beyond 99% of computer users and backup is important. I go to Acronis because they offer a solution and advertise Windows 8 compatible which it sort of is except recovery the bit you actually need.
Thanks for all your time, don't spend much more time on this but if you have something obvious let me know.
Cheers and I really appreciate your efforts.

No, the poing of WinPE is that you can add drivers. With the ATI Rescue Disk's Linux environment, some hardware may not be supported. A WinPE-based rescue disk allows you to add whatever Windows drivers are needed by your hardware.

Ian,
Does PENetCfg show a network adapter on the opening screen? If not, you need to add the driver for your network adapter. From your post I can see the driver you got is not in the necessary format. Getting drivers in the correct format has always been one of the biggest problems with using BartPE/WinPE. A typical driver will have an *.inf, a *.sys and a *.pnf file. The add driver tool needs to see the inf file to add a driver. A setup.exe file will not work. Broadcom seems to be supplying the drivers in the correct format on their website.

No network driver on opening screen just the dialouge box with TCP/IP error.
I found the drivers eventually but could not install them. I tried editing the drivers.ini file with no success, I tried many options. I see no example how to do this. I am sure you and others can do this in your sleep.
This is so far from a consumer product it is no wonder people don't have good backup/recovery solutions. In the past you just purchased the plus pack.
I even tried to install opera and that gave an icon but wrong path even though I followed the plugins.ini format.
Here is the addDrivers.ini I tried lots of combinations in folders and paths. I searched the internet high and low to find an answer on how to format the ini files. People just said put it in the drivers\net folder as below.
[Driver Paths]
driver1=
[Driver Folders]
folder1=C:\MustangPEBuilder_2_ADK\Drivers\Net
C:\MustangPEBuilder_2_ADK\Drivers\Net\Broadcom 57781 Network
I am beginning to understand why Acronis does not have a solution, it is just too hard.
This backup restore project has been stressful and taken up many hours and many days.
I appreciate your help but the PEBuilder has so many things to just know or understand it is beyond me. I need at minimum a screen shot step by step of what to do. Where to find drivers etc. This is probably a lot of work and I guess a free project so that is difficult. Again I believe a consumer product that promotes it is Windows 8 ready needs proper recovery disks that you can click and burn from the application.
I don't understand why Windows 8 comes with all the drivers but a WinPE builder can't grab all the standard drivers?
- Log in to post comments

Ian,
The line you show for AddDrivers.ini should work. Please check the box to pause after each driver is installed and run MustangPEBuilder again. You will see a command window open as the driver is being installed. What messages do you see in the window? You will need to close the command window to continue. If you see a message that the driver was installed successfully and still don't get a network adapter working, then you have used the wrong driver for your hardware.

Hi Paul...
I have a Win8 UEFI laptop to test on...
I did build the WinPE 4.0 version (ADK) last night and confirm that it's not recognized on UEFI systems (secure boot or not).
I just saw your post about the additional cab files for Secure boot and I will try that and get back to you.
One note, the USB drive didn't work on my system. It gives you the warning dialog but then doesn't do anything. My usb drive is 64gb formatted with NTFS and it's using a usb 2.0 port (fwiw).
Thanks for your great work, love it!

Hi Paul,
No need to test with secure boot enabled. It can't be done with a 32 bit version of WinPE. You will need to enter the BIOS and disable secure boot or select an Atapi override if your system allows.
As for the USB problem, 32 GB is the maximum size that will work. MustangPE uses the Microsoft tool to create the USB drive. It is formatted in FAT32 which imposes the 32 GB limit.

Thanks, got it, and I'm sure you mean "32 GB"...
I remember reading about the UEFI x64 requirement and then found that in the ADK Microsoft doesn't include the ability to run x86 code in the x64 PE environment (for whatever reason).
So I guess we're stuck until we can get x64 versions of our plugins, of which the Acronis one's are top priority.

Sanepar wrote:I would like to add the Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 to MustangPE with MustanPE Builder, but I can not. What is the step by step to do this integration?
How familiar are you with BartPE/WinPE? Have you ever written any plugins?
Look at the Docs folder of MustangPE. There are sample plugins and an explanation of the plugin format. Does AB&R 11.5 provide a BartPE plugin? If so, look at the inf file provided. This will show you what needs to be included in a plugin.

I'm learning how to create WinPE and do not know how to create plugins. Acronis Backup and Recovery offers WinPE with the plugin through the Acronis Media Builder, but is not working on my machine with UEFI Windows 8 32-bit. I created a bootable media MustangPE with the plugin of Acronis True Image Home 2013 which came with Windows PE but I can not use it because I have no license. I would like to create MustangPE with Acronis Backup & Recovery due to leave I have for him. I also tried to create the plugin MustangPE with Acronis Backup and Recovery but when I try to use it it says you need a service 'mms.exe' installed, as I am in WinPE do not know how to install it or services if this is possible.

You can't put the Windows version of the program into WinPE. Acronis has written a special version of the program to work in WinPE. The media builder they use in True Image with the Plus Pack has a file called WinPE.zip. You should be able to find a similar file in AB&R. If you unzip that file you will see all the files needed for WinPE. There will also be a file called acronis.inf. You can look at the file using notepad.exe. It will contain all the info need to create a BartPE plugin. MustangPE uses a different plugin format that is shown in the samples provided in the DOCS folder.

You should try again to create the WinPE disk using Backup & Recovery's Bootable Media Builder. It should work on your system unless you are using Windows 8.1 Preview edition. See instructions here http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35238?page=1#comment-129245 to make the WinPE files that are needed when the program asks for the location of your WinPE files.

I followed his recommendation in http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35238?page=1#comment-129245 for creating WinPE using Media Builder but did not succeed, the screen of the tablet seems to start loading but after a while disconnect the equipment. I am asking for assistance in parallel with Acronis but nothing so far.

I installed the product Acronis True Image Home 2013 build 5551 to create the MustangPE with Acronis plugin that worked perfectly on both devices Dell Latitude 10 and Hp ElitePad 900. I do not know what the basic difference between WinPE and MustangPE, why one works and the other does not.
- Log in to post comments

MustangPE is Microsoft's WinPE made from all Microsoft's tool provided in the ADK or WAIK. MustangPE has the BSExplorer shell added to WinPE to give you a desktop to work from. MustangPE also has a plugin format to add additional programs like True Image and others. The Acronis WinPE ISO builder also uses the WinPE files you create using the above instructions. Acronis has to program the ISO Builder to use these files and add True Image. That's where it's going wrong.

I received the response from Acronis support that says:
"I would like to inform you that WinPE is not an Acronis product. It is a product of Microsoft. We suggest that option only when there is a need to manually provide the required hardware drivers, which may not be available in the Acronis bootable media, by default.
Hence, you could use any third party bootable media if it works for you, like MustangPE. We are working on a build update that is expected to be released this quarter, but we do not have an ETA at the moment."
I'm dead because I can not implement my policy backup and restore in case of disaster my OS.

Why don't you use True Image instead of Backup & Recovery.

Because I only own a license for Backup and Recovery and the images created by True Image are incompatible.

I am running Win7 x64 to create a WinPE 3.0 boot disk using Mustang's PE Builder 2.0. TIH2011 and DD 11 are both installed on the machine. I have also installed the Media Add-ons,BartPE. I am able to build the ISO. When I boot from it, DD11, A43, PENetcfg all test out fine. I tested PENetcfg by successfully pinging my router and other computers on my home network.
However TIH2011 fails to run with error message "Failed to open (initialize) the computer." as shown in attached TIH2011error.jpg. Opera "works" I can log onto my router but cannot connect to the internet.
Any ideas on how to get TIH2011 working and be able to connect to the internet using Opera? What I hope are the relevant .ini files are shown below.
Any help would be appreciated. Craig

Craig,
Try processing the DD11 as plugin3 and the TIHome2011 as plugin4. That should get the proper snapman.sys driver for TI into the system32\drivers folder.
What version of Opera are you using. The latest version will not work. I am using version 12.12 and it works well.
Look at PENetCfg and make sure your network adapter is shown. Also make sure the Workgroup is set properly.

Paul,
Thanks for your help. I'll change the plug in order as you suggested. I was trying the latest Opera version (22.0.1471.70). I've found version 12.17 on the Opera website and have extracted those files to folder that the Opera.ini file points to.

I do see my network adapter with PENetCfg.
I'll give this a go later today and report back.
Thanks again,
Craig

Paul,
Success!
Your suggestions did the trick. TiH2011, DD11, A43, PENetCfg and Opera 12.17 all working perfectly. No problem connectiong to the internet with Opera 12.17. Thanks for your help and for getting back to me so quickly.
