Acronis True Image gets stuck when calculating time for backup

I tried to back up a partition from the ATI screen. The program starts "calculating" the time needed and never finishes. Restarting the program and rebooting the computer does not help. This malfunction is repeatable.

Same problem here.I am backing up to a new 2TB WD passport.I formatted drive to NTFS.The led on drive just keeps blinking.Just hangs on calculating all day long.

Eruf,
Which build of 2014 are you using?
If you have also installed or left activated the Passport disk utilties, try disabling them, also run chkdsk /r on the drive to see if there are any sectors or MFT bitmap that is not reporting itself properly.
Is the drive connected via an external USB hub and does your PC have a card reader attached either internally or externally?
Have you tried plugging the drive into a different USB port especially on on the back of the PC?

On a clear disk you can seek forever

Colin,
I'm using build 6614.Now that I have tried the rear USB it is working. Thanks
However now I am getting read errors for disk 1. About half way through the backup it's telling me if the error persists to use the check disk utility and make a backup of the disk?? Now I am backing up a C and a D partition on an internal drive to the external passport drive. I assume it is the internal drive that it wants me to check and if so, why tell me to make a backup of it as that is what I'm trying to do.
I hope I'm clear and thanks again.

Ok.I did a check disk which made some repairs and all is good now.

Me too. I am trying to back up 2 SSD drives. A 256G C: and a 1TB D: and it got in the calculation loop for 18 hrs before i stopped it with nothing backed up. New very fast Titan chip and using USB 3 connection from CoolerMaster to 2TB WD Passport formatted to NTFS.

You'd think that calculations which process at the speed of light could be accomplished in a fraction of a second.

Add me to this sad list too......just "upgraded" (???) to 2015 and now having this problem.....I am not happy
Sometimes it appears to have done the backup with the green bar at around 90% and "less than 1 minute remaining" message....which sits there forever until I kill the backup

Same here. Backing up to a new WD My Passport Ultra -- it says forever less than 1 minute remaining and then Failed to read data from the disk.
Thanks for any help,

I cured the problem once and for all....having been a loyal Acronis customer for over 8 years I now use Easus Todo...... it's a much more user friendly interface and, more importantly it seems to work better !
...and their technical support actually answer you usually within a few hours of the request....and it's cheaper !
sorry if this offends but Acronis just isn't the excellent product it once was

Acronis 15 made one backup yesterday and files can be read from that tib. Today Acronis has stalled for an hour or so on about 24MB (nothing on the disk) as described by others, on the same drive as it worked OK on yesterday (new destination folder). The schemes were both "custom" and "full" which made no difference for various attempts, on each of the three internal backup drives, to do an image of the main boot drive (windows 7 64). All the drives have more than enough space for a few such backups.
A few days ago Acronis stopped working. I tried updating it with a later build; that seemed to go ok but after that Acronis didn't work at all. I uninstalled Acronis and ran the downloaded-from-the-Acronis-website cleanup tool. I also uninstalled it using Revo Uninstall Pro that usually does a wonderful job of cleaning up old junk...However, after all attempts, Acronis could not re-install on this computer. I only got invitation buttons to Repair and Uninstall, as options; neither did anything. Repair would take ages (even though all the directories had gone from the disks) and Uninstall got an error message.
I made an error using Regedit (trying to further clean Acronis so it might think, after all, that it truly has been uninstalled and cleaned....despite it having no intentions to re-install). I backed up emails etc and ran Acronis from a CD and got a perfect reconstruction (as usual) of the last backup image (after waiting hours for a full surface scan that got automatically requested). That worked well, so I made an image of the reconstructed boot drivfe after loading files back onto the boot drive. Now Acronis no longer can back up; it hangs on "Calculating time remaining..." with "Backing up... 24.43 MB processed".
I wasted ages trying to find a way to get an answer/suggestion; so far no joy. Considering this copy has been loaded onto the computer for only since version 15 came out, the "help" has been rotten; I refuse to pay $32 for a one-off that might not work, in advance (they're doing what got Microsoft cursed for) and I refuse to buy another copy just to get help installing it (I'll change; I have Nero latest anyway and that did work I just happened to like Acronis better, until now). I managed to get a form filled out (after lots of tries) and might get an answer back.
What's needed is a better clean-up tool, to cure the maddening blue notice about being able to either "Repair" or "Uninstall" (a non-existing supposedly cleaned installation).
I ran the installation program to see if it would update ok on a 10-years-old laptop (XP Pro) using the 3rd license. Acronis 15 updated from the old version, did a good backup of the laptop other than stopping almost at the point of being fully installed so I just reset the laptop...and found Acronis is version 15 on that (registered; redundant/unnecessary because the old version is perfect for the old laptop).
While writing this Acronis has jammed on all three internal disks available as backups. I'll reset the computer after sending this, and hope Acronis still works. Since yesterday's ok backup, Microsoft loaded >50 updates (the image now on the boot drive got updates from the 6th to the 14th) last night so, rather than have to wait Ages for a shut-down/restart, I have been trying to get Acronis to work on the best installation of W7 I've had (after the updates from Microsoft).
If somebody finds an answer, please let me know david@westernau.com (has boxtrapper anti-spam on it). If I find the answer, I'll post it.

David,
1. To fully uninstall True Image, use the Acronis Cleaner, this should also allow you to reinstall afterwards. The cleaner is found here, if you have any other Acronis programs installed this utility will disable them and they will require a repair install.
2. What Firewall software do you use and is it the same on all your PCs?
3. Was Nero installed and running InCD or their imaging engine? InCD in particular has often caused issues when TI is around.
4. Are your video drivers up to date - for a reason I've never fully understood, video drivers can cause TI to misbehave when booted in Windows.
Have you made an Acronis recovery media? If you intend to continue to use True Image, make sure you make this media and that either/both the Linux and WinPE versions can boot all your PCs successfully.

Colin,
Thanks for your reply and kindness helping.
Yes I did use the cleaner, on the last uninstall, along with Revo Uninstall pro. The Cleaner worked last time (did nothing on an earlier attempt, before restoring the boot drive from an Acronis image). My difficulties are that Acronis stopped working and after uninstalling etc still only offered repair or uninstall (of an already uninstalled program) then, after reinstalling, it made one ok image then only went into long indefinite delays that did nothing. It was probably analyzing the boot drive it was supposed to be imaging, but the progress indicator just added up more time as if it had stalled again and again as it had done for very long times previously. "Help" could have told me that sometimes the analyses go on for a long time before the backup gets going at full speed...but they didn't and I ran out of patience.
I got very cross that "help" and "support" was unavailable after such a short time since buying the product. I tested for one day and bought a competing product that worked perfectly, verified the image which is wonderfully accessible as a new drive letter complete with thumbnails in Windows Explorer and it's interface is logical like old versions of Acronis that worked ok and easier to learn than the present couple of buttons and hidden facilities.
If Acronis works again perhaps I'll find out and use it on my main computer again; but presently on my main computer I'm not using it any more.
I also noticed that of two .tib files, that I copied out of directories on other drives, as backups, one was "corrupt" and the other mistaken as not being the last in a chain (they were both Full backups in their original forms). I had to find the original backup on another drive, to recover the image from that; so Acronis .tib files can't be copied without risking them being destroyed.
Best Regards
David

I had this same problem (ATI 2016) and this post fixed it for me: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/100320#comment-316587
After I disabled the Volume Shadow Copy service then the backup completed successfully
- Log in to post comments

Old thread so I don't know if anybody is still following it but I recently encountered this problem with Acronis True Image 2016. Rather than just disable the volume shadow copy service completely, I set my backup job to do it before the backup and reenable it afterwards.
The full process is posted here: http://www.lymans.net/2016/03/fixing-acronis-true-image-2016-hang-backup/
Since setting that up I haven't had any problems with the backup job.

Mike, thank you for your blog post.
It is also possible to disable VSS usage for a particular backup task without touching Windows VSS service itself:
1) open the folder where your backups settings are saved: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts
2) each file there stores settings for particular backup job. Open files one-by-one in Notepad, or open latest modified file (if you have just modified your task), until you find the one that has backup name on 5th line, e.g. MyBackups
3) click Edit - Replace and replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"
4) save changes and close the file
Thanks,
Slava

Slava,
Thanks. That's a more direct method and avoid issues with anything that might rely on VSS while the backup is running. I've not see this solution posted anywhere else.

Hi All,
I was hoping this was going to fix the issue for me but it doesnt seem to!
After an Acronis TI 2016 update (two updates ago) all of a sudden my backups hang for no reason at 0% calculating. Also cannot cancel out of back up either, only way to get it to stop is to reboot, but of course as soon as you run backup it hangs again.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1. Reinstall TI 2016
2. Uninstall Reinstal TI 2016
3. Delete and recreate backup jobs
4. Wait for another update to come out and let it update.
5. Repeat steps 2-3 after update.
6. Follow Slava's directions hoping VSS setting would fix it.
My only other option is to try installing an older version. I have no idea why this would start happening after working fine on this computer for years with different versions. Unless a windows update or something caused issue.
Last succesful backup 5/14/16!
Hoping this issue will be identified and corrected in a future update but unless it is really unrelated but the first time it started was right after an update.
I am very dissapointed because I have been a loyal customer since TI 2009 and have purchased update just about every year yet I am told my thirty day support window has passed, 30-days? Well I dont plan to buy anymore with that lack of support.
Thanks,
Tom

I have found that if you leave it COMPLETELY alone (maybe 10 mins or more !!) it does in fact then proceed to run OK ...... maybe this is not correct but it seems to work
Quite agree that 30 days support is poor... OK, so after 30 days maybe not expect instant support but there should be SOME !!! .... other companies offer continuous email support with a few days resoponse time
I've also been a loyal purchaser since 2007 !
Easus ToDo is an excellent contender, their tech support is second to none - I tried it for a year and the response from tech support was sometimes immediate (!!!) but always within a day, the interface is good too, the backups took a bit longer than TI but run overnight that wasn't a problem....the only reason I came back is that it didn't recognise my UEFI BIOS on a new laptop running Win 10........when they sort that out I'm off !

I appreciate the response, its been sitting at 0% for over an hour though, also no files written in backup folder. Never used to have that issue and like you very dissapointed.
I honestly prefered the older versions, I might go back a version or two. But before making another purchase I will definately look at other options.
Acronis seems focused on their cloud service, I cant afford that with several PC's plus I dont want those long backup times using the cloud.
Tom

Tom,
As a test, can you try disabling VSS for your backup task and see if it moves forward. You may have a VSS compabitiliy issue. When VSS is disabled for a task, Acronis will switch from Windows VSS to the Acronis Snapapi backup method as was the default in earlier versions of Acronis.

Option 1 would be ideal...

Bobbo,
Thanks for your suggestion, but as mentioned in my item #6 I tried that, here is the setting in the script: use_vss="false">

I have to say that TI 2016 does seem better than 2015 .... but it still has major problems as per this thread
I have messed with VSS (we shouldn't NEED to !) and at one point actually got a good backup from scratch without any problems but it contiues to be patchy - sometimes OK, sometimes not.....exactly what you don't need when the system crashes and you need to restore !
I have also found that, booted from a USB stick it is incredibly difficult to find my NAS drive - have tried the ip address and also it's "name", again sometimes it's there sometimes not, sometimes it appears under "computers near me" sometimes it just doesn't appear at all until several re-boots which is very disconcerting if you have a dead PC
The program used to be good and user friendly around version 10, I agree with another post that they seem to be concentrating more on cloud backups which, with 1.5TB of data is utterly ridiculous for the end user in need of a quick restoration.
As previously stated the technical support should also be for longer than a measley 30 days - I only backup once a month so effectively I have one day of "support", come on Acronis - you aim to be the leader, give your people better support if only by email with a couple of days respose time.

I have finally managed an actual backup!!! I had to do the vss false thing. Everytime I changed a source or made other changes, I had to go back in and check all of the scripts and change the vss setting again. If I failed to do that before I tried to run one of the backups, it would hang. Then, clicking stop always fails to stop. In order to really stop, I have to reboot. Then I can go in, recheck all of the scripts, and then I can do the backup. Folks, it shouldn't be this hard. Hope they get this fixed!

did my share of reading about the problems we are having, one or two things stand out .
first...... for me all this started after the latest upgrade of the 2016 program
secondly....... i agree with the poster who said WE should not have to go digging into and changing anything to get this bag of worms running. We put or money out for what we were told was a finished operating backup program period. If Acronis cant supply what they advertised they should step up and do the right thing (which we know they wont).
i left the program running for 11 hours while it "figured" the time nessassry to download....end result......nothing.
I hate being taken for a sucker.....

This worked for me, Thanks for the input.
I do have a concern and perhaps it's becasue I know just enough to typically cause problems for myself...
Since we are turning off the shadow service is it safe to be using the computer and changing files while the backup is running?
I thought vss made a shadow copy so we could backup up files that were in use.

Bruce, if you follow the steps in post #24 above posted by Bobbo, then you will only be disabling the Microsoft VSS function for one specific Acronis backup task, not globally across the system.
The effect of doing this for a task is to bring back the Acronis snapshot function that was used in earlier versions of the product before Acronis decided to use the Microsoft VSS snapshot service.
The purpose of any snapshot function is exactly to enable files / data to be backed up that would otherwise be inaccessible because of locks held by the OS or other programs etc.
It is perfectly safe to continue using the computer and changing files while the backup is running but please realise that the backup will only include the files in the state they held when the snapshot image of them was created, i.e. at the start of the backup activity. Any further changes made during the backup process will not be included.

Any new developments regarding this? I just purchased a 3 license install and it has yet to successfully complete one backup of any kind scheduled or not, and Acronis told me I would get nothing from their support unless I pay more, which is complete bs in the world of customer service. Kalebmc,
Acronis give 30 day support from the day of purchase unless it is a recovery problem or you have paid for support.
Did you install True Image as a single user or all users on the PC?
Are you backing up to a NAS?
Do you use a password or pin to log on to your system?
The folder that you are trying to back up; are these files that are accessed constantly by a program in the background?
Under properties of the folder in question, what permissions are set?
Does this Media folder have a large tree of folders beneath it?
Are there any files with names longer than 256 characters in the folder?
Is TI able to either image a complete partition or backup a different folder with no problem?

If ATI is such good software, why does it have to be this complicated to use?

I agree.
I have three Windows 10 computers and it doesn't work on ANY of them with their standard uinstallation.
I called into tech support (unfortunenately after the 30 day grace period) paid their support fee, wasted hours of my time and they still counldn't get the computer working AND they wouldn't even refund my money for the support incident.
I ended up having to replace it with Shadowprotect which worked on all three machines out of the box
Pathetic!

I only do a backup once a month so effectively have had zero "free" support
With the latest release, Easus backup have now sorted the problems I previously had accessing my NAS drive from a boot disk so I am returning to their product.
Their support (should you actually need it !) is simply astounding....often replied to within 2 hours, normally within 24 and ALWAYS within 48 no matter when you submit a ticket - day or night......and, more importantly it is free forever, the product is cheaper, it works well and is far easier to us than TI ..... they offer a free 30 day fully operational product trial as well !

For a while my new windows 10 was actually backing up. Husband got a new computer--it worked sort of--had to go in and change the vss settings before it would even try. Now his has quit backing up, even though the vss now says false on all of the scripts. Yesterday, I checked to be sure mine was still backing up. No, of course not. Last bkup was 6/12/2016. Two terabytes available on the backup external hd (not a NAS). Really tired of Acronis--we have been a customer since 2010 but not willing to continue with a company that values its customers so little. It is apparent that their software has a problem with the current Windows operating system, and yet they have the gaul to charge Bruce Ciarleglio an extra charge to fix their own problem but won't refund his money when they can't fix it. This is not a company I want to do business with.

As I have said elsewhere, try Easus backup ....free 30 day trial, easy to use, latest release seems reliable and their tech support us truly superb

Of course we never really know if we have a good back-up until we have had a sucessful restore from it. Regardless of which one we use.

Actually, I just un-installed Shadowprotect SPX trial (although it worked perefectly out of the box on all three of my computers) and installed Easus backup trial because it is about 1/2 the price. Easus backup also worked on all three computers out of the box woth no special (pay for it) tech support. I verified that the backup worked and I'll if you goes for a while without any issues before I buy it.
It's amusing that none of these companies have issues installing and working out-of-the-box but Acronis told me I have a unique situation with my computer.

Guess both of our brand new HP screamin' i7 desktop computers running Windows 10 Pro are unique, too. Will be interested to hear if your Easus has any issues.

I also have windows 10 and last year Easus did not work properly on the PC using a USB stick or on a new laptop using UEFI BIOS..... they seem to have cracked the issues with the latest build

Just to correct the record: After reporting that ATI stopped working on 6/12/2016 for no apparent reason, I have discovered the snag. I happened to be on my computer this morning when it tried again to backup, and saw a brief popup message that it could not backup java.exe, javas.exe, javasw.exe. There was no suggestion why it couldn't. The error message also didn't give me a clue as to the address of the offending files. I finally tried putting those file names in the excluded list without specifying the full address--that actually worked. Anyone have a clue why it stubbs its toe trying to backup java.exe? Stopping there stopped all other backup jobs. Anytime something like that halts further backups, it ought to send me an email, and it ought to include the full address in the error message. Just my thoughts.

Ellen, not sure if this would be the same issue, but I had a backup task that kept failing for an unknown reason without any obvious clues until I managed to 'catch' a brief pop-up that showed me that one of the files I had included in my source data set was being blocked by my antivirus software because it considered it to be potentially malicious (it was actually a BIOS update for a Lenovo system I have!).
Once I removed the offending file from the backup all was fine. I had already excluded the file and its containing folder within the antivirus exclusions but the real-time antivirus scan seems to have ignored that when Acronis tried to access it to do the backup.

It certainly may be the same issue, although not sure. I didn't "exclude" these files from the entire computer backup, which obviously backed up those same files without complaint. When I finally found the location on my computer, they were 0 length. Do wish I understood all of this!

A file with a reported zero length can be down to a permissions problem, that is the file has perhaps been restored from a different PC or copied across. Either way, right click on it, select properties and then security, see who is listed as the owner with full access.
If it isn't your name and or showing full access, then ownership of the file or access rights has to be changed.

I have FINALLY had it with TI. Through several years, it just gets worse and worse, and the final straw was 2016 hijacking the Registry so that Windows Backup would not work even with TI uninsatalled (which they refused to admit until severely pressed). The 30 day support is an industry joke and the latest update killed TI yet again, and I am NOT prepared to fiddle with Window Services to excuse Acronis' poor programmming!

I had the "unable to create volume snapshot" fault.
Thanks to Steve #34, I followed the post #24 solution "replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"" and the backup has since worked.
Thanks for that advice, hopefully it will keep working.
I agree with others above that we should not have tlo do this to make TI work, but am not sure if it TI 2016 at fault or the most recent Windows 10 "anniversary" update.
Since that update I have had enormous problems with my computer - won't start, won't stop, settings gone, default programs re-set, can't find printers, domain services issues, the list goes on.
Might be a coincidence, but my TI problems seemed to start at the same time.
