Certain folders and files are missing from my backup

Oh my goodness. I've been having loads of issues with Acronis TI 2014 on my husband's Win 8.1 PC but I thought everything was fine on my Win 7 Pro PC until I checked a backup that I do daily in incremental mode of specific folders.
I've looked through Windows Explorer and Acronis Explorer only to discover the very folders which I specifically worked on over the past few days aren't anywhere to be seen in the backup files. They are specifically two folders containing an offline version of a website. I have also updated a couple of documents in another folder and created other new folders and they ARE in the backup. What can possibly be wrong? The program that I used to open the two missing folders is Microsoft Frontpage 2003. Is there any relevance in that?
Going back to these two folders, one was new and one had been there for ages. I didn't change anything in the old folder but I did have files open on it. The new folder was created since the start of this backup task.
The backup task was a brand new task created last week. The initial backup is obviously a full backup of the folders and the sheme is set to run 10 increments thereafter and store no more than 2 version chains. I'm only up to 7 increments so far and the new folder isn't in any of the increments or the initial full backup. The old folder was showing in the initial backups but disappeared from the increments after the time when I had this folder open.
This is really worrying. It makes the whole point of backup software redundant. I can' believe all the issues I'm having with Acronis TI 2014. I used to run TI 11 on XP and never encountered a problem with that at all.
Has anyone else experienced this? I need to know what I'm doing wrong, if anything.

Annie,
Not sure I can help here but will try. When you say that these folders and web sites are "local" what do you mean by that? The old folder you refer to that seems so illusive, have you attempted to save this entire folder with all contents? I suspect if you save the OLD folder in your Frontpage 2003 app you might fix that issue. It has been ages since I worked with Frontpage but as I recall the app creates a virtual web server from which to work. I believe that your files and folders are in your backups it's just that you cannot find them in the way in which you expect to. I also think you might be able to save these folders outside of Frontpage to a different location on your disk for viewing/access via your browser. See if you can save these folders to another folder created on your disk and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you for your reply Enchantech. I believe I am getting closer to the root of the problem but I don't know why it is happening. I have established that for some reason, once a website created on my XP machine in Frontpage 2000 has been opened in Frontpage 2003, it appears Acronis believes the folder on my PC that the web site lives in is a system folder.
The scheme that I had been running to back up these folders was excluding system files. The complete backup was not and this is why I could see the folders in that particular backup, albeit the folder icons were faded.
For information, I create simple html sites and test them in a web browser. I don't use any Frontpage fancy stuff and any scripts I may employ, I test on the live site on the net.
I've been unable to establish why the 'new' site that I created in Frontpage 2003 on my Windows 7 pc began by not backing up but now does. It no longer has a faded icon in Acronis Explorer and therefore is not interpreting it as a system folder.
I can't see the what the problematic folders have that the new one does not. They each have a variety of stuff including some having hidden folders put there by Frontpage and some that I've managed to unhide and some have desktop.ini files and some do not. I have tried copying these folders to a new location but this has not helped.
Clearly these folders aren't system folders because I can see them in Windows Explorer when I hide hidden folders and system files.
The workaround for me is to ensure I back up system files instead of excluding them but this shouldn't really be happening.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Are they actually shortcuts (.lnk) to actual files (or junctions to folders) that were stored somewhere else?
- Log in to post comments

No, they are the actual folders on my PC's C: drive.
When I moved from XP to Windows 7, I used a different PC username and I'm wondering whether I'm running into bother with permissions and the like. I have to say that Win 7 security is very confusing.
I haven't noticed a problem with other files such as Word documents.

Annie,
I believe this is a permissions issue with the greyed out folders. Check the permissions levels set for these folders by select folder, right click and choose properties, security. You can use the edit button to change permissions for these folders.

Hi Enchantech.
I have right-clicked one of the website folders on my PC. The permissions in the security tab show:
Group or user names:
SYSTEM
Chelsea (ANNIE-PC\Chelsea)
Administrators (ANNIE-PC\Administrators)
In the box below, the actual permissions themselves are the same for each of the above and everything is Allowed except Special permissions.
Does this sound right? My username was Annie Barnes on my XP machine and, as you can see, it is Chelsea on my Win 7 PC.

It is correct. Problem is that having permissions set the same for multiple user sometimes causes problems in that for example in your case above your (ANNIE-PC\Administrators) is behaving badly because there is no reference to that account on your Win 7 machine. Remove that account from the permissions using the edit function and see if that changes things for you.

Sorry for my ignorance but when I try to remove the (ANNIE-PC\Administrators) option, I get a message saying I can't remove it because the object is inheriting permissions from its parent.
When I go in to change the permissions and untick the 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent', I get a warning saying 'If you proceed, inheritable permissions will no longer propagate to this object'.
I click 'Remove' and I am then told 'No groups or users have permission to access this object. However, the owner of this object can assign permissions' and all the groups disappear. At this point, I cancel as I'm afraid of the consequences. I don't know what I'm doing.
Just to say, that all my personal files have these three user groups, if that is the right terminology. It's only the particular website folders that cause the issue.
Out of interest, how do you know that (ANNIE-PC\Administrators) isn't on my Win 7 PC? Is it something that is created in XP?
Sorry for all the questions. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Annie,
Windows permissions, oh what a headache! Your questions are all good questions. I will try to make some sense of them for you.
The reason I told you to remove the Administrators (ANNIE-PC\Administrators) entry is because of your comment previously that your User name is Chelsea in Win 7 whereas in Win XP it was Annie. Having looked at your comments here, I can see that this accounts permissions are in fact resident on your Win 7 machine.
The complaint that you see saying that this account cannot be removed because of the object is inheriting permissions from it's parent is saying that this account is an account within the current system thus my comment above.
The message saying that "if you proceed, inheritable permissions will no longer propagate to this object" means that by proceeding you will remove the inheritable permissions restrictions on that folder from the parent. The parent here is the SYSTEM account.
The message 'No groups or users have permission to access this object. However, the owner of this object can assign permissions' Means that whichever of the 3 accounts listed SYSTEM, ANIIE-PC\Chelsea, or Administrators (ANNIE-PC\Administrators) is the current Owner of the folder can set permissions for the folder. Would say it is safe to say that the Owner of the object (this folder) is the SYSTEM.
I think your best course of action here is to take ownership of the folder which will grant all permissions privileges to your Chelsea account. I am including a link here for procedures on how to do that. The link references Server 2012 but applies to Win 7 as well. Apply the change to this folder then check to see if it made the desired result. If so then you can apply to the other problem folders.

Thank you for the detailed reply. The folder permissions were already set to Chelsea. However, I've been troubleshooting this problem again all morning and I think I have found the answer.
It seems that I had to right-click the folder > Properties > Customize tab. From here I had to set something in the 'Optimize this folder for' drop-down box, even though it was already showing something. In my case, I went to the parent folder on my desktop where all my data is stored and set this to 'General Items' and placed a tick in the 'Also apply this template to all subfolders' box.
If you have the same issue and your choice is already selected, then choose another option and then go back to your initial choice so that you can click the 'Apply' button.
This issue may have arisen because I recently moved all my data from my XP machine to my Win 7 machine. Others might not have this problem.
NB: I think this same procedure might resolve the folders not being excluded problem my husband was having on his Window 8.1 Pro PC - http://forum.acronis.com/forum/44917

Annie,
Glad you got it working, I should have asked if you had access to or knew where the parent folder was, my mistake, I had assumed that you simply migrated this and a few other troublesome folders to your Win 7 machine leaving the parent behind.
Your actions indirectly effected the permissions of the folders which of course was the answer. You may be right about your husbands situation as well. Windows permissions are becoming more stringent with each release of new versions and this will continue. Users are faced with a learning curve in this area as many functions that were easy and straight forward before from the early days of Windows are now considered security risks and if permissions are not set correctly or conflict among user accounts problems like yours and many others arise as a result.
Often times it is necessary for a user to take ownership of a file or folder in order to circumvent the security permission restrictions place on them by Windows. If you have trouble working with files/folders in the future and can find no other way to resolve your issue keep taking ownership in mind.

I possibly didn't explain myself very well. I didn't end up altering any permissions or ownership in the end as everything was already set to my Chelsea account.
The problem seems to lie with Acronis not being able to interpret information about folder templates.
Unfortunately, further testing has shown that when new changes are made, I have to 'Apply' the template type once more as Acronis isn't retaining the information.
I've also discovered that I have to make this change to the folder(s) in question rather than the top level folder. My top level folder is about three levels up. I had the 'Also apply this template to all subfolders' box ticked on the top level folder but I'm wondering whether this only permeates to the next level down. In any case Acronis isn't remembering the info so the only option is to ensure I INCLUDE system folders in a folders/files backup. The default is to EXCLUDE them.
I've sent this information off to Acronis and I await their reply.

I see, if you have a look at the path to these folders before you apply the template to the folder after a change has been made, then again after you have saved the changes made, do you see any special characters in the string like "~"? This might be a situation in which the Frontpage 2000 templates are not compatible with 2003 for whatever reason and you are just going to have to apply the workaround you have found in order to achieve your desired result.
If you see special characters in the path string depending on what they are might give you a clue as to how they are being handled by the apps involved and Windows itself, not that this would help to resolve the problem but it could help in explaining why this is happening.
Hope you find some resolution.

I am not surprised in the slightest. My own backups had specific files missing, and I noticed it immediately. Odd, since the backup drive's own built-in backup software backed up everything without any problem... that is, until I upgraded my system to Windows 8.1 from 7. That's when all the crap started happening. When I used Acronis to backup some files to a new backup drive, everything went haywire. Not only were many files missing, but my brand-new backup drive stopped working. The finger was clearly to be pointed straight at Acronis. Contrary to their claim, their Acronis 2014 True Image software is NOT Windows 8.1 compatible. It works, but it is buggy as hell, causing temporary damage to a hard drive and wiping out entire portions of data. Incredibly enough, the 'support' people here at Acronis were blaming my brand-new backup drive, which was working perfectly BEFORE I used Acronis' software. One of the idiots here even claimed he went through 4 of the same model backup drive due to mechanical failures (sure, sure). I do believe the people at Acronis should really learn to accept that their product is much less than perfect. I have already been spreading the word, advising people NOT to purchase the software.

xxMichaelxx,
Gee, I would like to personally "thank you" for your nice compliments.
In my more than 15,000 assistance postings on the internet, you are the very first to use such an enduring expression as to call me an "idiot" and a "liar" so you are certainly a unique individual. Over the years, a few others may have disagreed with my postings but never chose to use "idiot" or implied "lying" as part of their remarks.

Most people posting on this forum fall into 3 categories.
Either to seek help; or to offer help; or to rant. Your postings does not appear to fall into either of the first two.
You indicate Acronis caused you a disk problem which you resolved but you never offered to help any others in their similar problem, so I would believe that your posting intent was not to help others.
One of your postings would seem to indicate you installed Acronis before you upgraded Win 7 to Windows 8.1 If true, Why not use the TrueImage Cleanup Utility to remove TIl and then do a fresh install of TrueImage. Then, if you continue to have issues, post those issues (without rants) and "other" volunteers" may attempt to help you to resolve some of the issues of which you complain about.
By the way, one correction to your postings. ALL responses (including mine) to any of your prior postings have been by "volunteers" (non-Acronis personnel) which are non-paid and are donating their own time while attempting to help other users. Most users (but apparently not you) apprecate our attempts to help). The one and only response by "support" to any of your accumulated postings hs b een when the moderator locked your rant for failure to follow forum rules at this link.
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/56336
It is sad you had to hijack a posting by another user seeking help in order to get your rant posted.
Since you don't fit into the "seeking" help or "offering" help category, I have nothing more to write into this posting.

Whilst I'm glad to see that the staff at Acronis moderate this forum, I'm disappointed that they do not seem to interact with users' issues. I know they won't look at every problem but there are other posts where lots of users are clearly having the same issue and it doesn't get looked into. Once such case is the non-exclusion of certain folders when they should be excluded - http://forum.acronis.com/forum/44917.
With regard to my above issue, I will just have to include system files in my backup to be sure I catch everything. Sadly, this is not my only problem but I'll post again separately.

Annie,
Your expression matches my feelings which I have expressed many times to Acronis. Their support presence is sorely needed on the forum. Sadly, their business model calls for user to contact them directly for direct support.
You mentioned a refund. Be sure and notify Acroins direct before your 30 days expire. Currently, if you are still within your 30 days window, contact support direct for som personal assistance.
