2015 Rescue Media does not see my USB3 external hard drives

Thread needs solution

Update:
I burned a Win-PE dvd as a last resort. What the heck!.....it actually runs!
It takes a while to boot, but then running ATI2015, I can now see all the internal/external drives. Yep, also USB-3.
I plugged in the USB-3 drive when the program was already running. ATI needed about 1 minutes to think about this, but then it showed my images. I can read and validate them.
Next step will be the actual restore.

I'll post an other update about this.

Update2:

So replaced the HDD in my laptop for a brand new SSD. Booted with the Win-PE DVD and started to recover.
First you need to Add a new drive otherwise you can not recover to the new drive. I choose for MBR type disc.
Then I choose to recover the system reserved and of course the C partition.
Then the recovery started. First it seems nothing is happening but after 1-2 minutes the green bar starts to move.
The recover ended "successfully"

Well NOT !!!!!!!!!
Then I rebooted the labtop:

Windows failed to start.
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

It's also says to insert my windows installation discs. I don't have them, my installation is a purchased download..

So crewed my laptop open again and put the old HDD back. Luckily the drive boots flawless and I have my system back.
In the computer management tool / disk management i can see that the recovery created only 1 partition. Primary & active, but missing boot / page file. No sign of the special system reserved.

What a crappy software ATI2015 is .. wow.
Next step will be googling how to make this rescued drive boot-able.

Hi Edwin,

I'm sorry to read you're having problems restoring to different hardware. Unfortunately, this is something I never did before and so I am unable to provide any help. I am sure, though, that you'll find your way to a successful migration. When this happens, please let us know how you did it, what machine are you using and what are the brands of your drives, as this is something that at least some of us may need (or just choose) to do in the future.

Good luck.

Edwin,
I created the WIN-PE Rescue Media on USB Flash Drive. I don't remember doing anything special other than what's listed in my previous post. I found that I could boot from it and see all internal & external drives (including a Seagate on USB 3.0). However, I have NOT actually tried doing a restore.

Edwin,
1 more thought :-
If you want to convert from a working HDD to SSD its worth trying it using the Cloning function as an alternative to restoring a backup, as this should transfer all the partitions and resize them appropriately if HDD & SSD have different capacity.

Hi Alan,
I especially have chosen for this way and not the cloning way. I want to test whether an image restore actually works. In case of a HDD or SSD crash, I want to be up and running in, let's say, 1 hour. That was the main reason for me to buy this software.
And I'm glad that I've tested this because it turn out to be crappy software. It doesn't do what it promises at all!
And my laptop isn't that old and also not that new. A normal W8.1 HP laptop running an up-to-date W8.1

So I'm going for a refund; I have no faith what-so-ever in Acronis.

Update:
So did two things next:
1 - made an usb w8.1 recovery flash drive
2 -Cconnected the not working recovered drive by usb (assigned e:) and run following command (in elevated CMD box)
bootsect /mbr e:
bcdboot e:\windows

Then rebooted again.
The above didn't do anything: still the same error.
Then I rebooted the w8.1 recovery flash drive and run windows system repair.
It run for 15 minutes and still wasn't ready. Then I tapped some mouse keys and the system rebooted

Wow, the repair was successfully. Windows is running again. Pfft, what an endeavor this al was. In total10 hours from the first moment.

As said above; I don't have any faith is ATI anymore. This ridiculous workaround may work with build 6613, But what about the coming updates?. And 'm not going to test every ATI update whether a real restore does work....

Hi LinYu,

Moving to the SSD was a way for me to test the software. I was hoping for a successful and easy recovery, and that turn out not to be the case. If you are relying on ATI to recover your system in case of crash, I would suggest you test your specific situation. It might save you a lot of disappointment /anger when it does not work.

I was quite active in this thread a few months back, and have continued reading all the replies as I get email notification. Wanted to weigh in on this particular thought from Alan.

The preferred method of migrating a system onto a new drive (doesn't matter what size or type) is to perform a "disk and partition" backup and then restore it onto the new drive. This has been discussed in a number of other threads and even if your source drive has not failed, cloning is not the preferred method. More importantly, given the nature of this thread's discussion, cloning is not to be considered a viable option ... we are concerned primarily with disaster recovery.

All that being said, I have some questions for Edwin.
1) Are you certain that you have performed a disks and partitions backup?
2) Is it possible that you only did a backup of your C: drive?
3) What laptop are you using?
4) Is your drive using any sort of encryption?

And the beat goes on ...

OK Edwin, so you managed (somehow) to boot from the SSD drive. I'm glad for you. Now, did you try to switch back to your old HDD? If you did, what happened? If not, you might wish to try it. It's a learning process, I think...

P.S. - Did anyone get any feedback from Anna or anyone else at Acronis, following your previous contacts? (This is also a "learning process", if you get what I mean... )

.
PPS - I noticed after posting that Daniel provided some valuable information and also a few questions. I'm curious to read your answers (learning process...) if you don't mind. I believe my question goes about the same direction as Daniel's. Thanks.

Further to my last message, I have been experimenting with 2015, build 6613.

I have created a boot media (2015, build 6613) on to a SanDisk Cruzer Blade memory stick, and low and behold, occasionally this can see:

Both of my Seagate USB 3 external hard drives, but sometimes, only one, and sometimes none!

Repeating the process, with 2014, on to a SanDisk Cruzer Blade memory stick, the results are always consistent - I can always see both of my drives.

What I have noticed, with CD Rom, and memory stick, is that 2015, always appears to boot up quicker, than 2014.

Could it be that 2015 is loading too fast, and in doing so failing to load some important driver information

Hi Daniel,

1) Are you certain that you have performed a disks and partitions backup?
-> yes I'am.
2) Is it possible that you only did a backup of your C: drive?
-> No, both system reserved and the C-drive partition were back-upped and both were set to be restored. The system reserved didn't got restored.
3) What laptop are you using?
-> HP probook 450 G0, intel i7, w81
4) Is your drive using any sort of encryption?
-> No encryption, the images itself were encrypted

Hi LinYu,

I'm not sure what you are asking. The SSD is now working (and fast :-) . Yes, I could experiment further with the HDD which is now surplus. But after 10 hours trying to get the SSD working, I'm actually pretty done. And as said before; I lost faith in this product. So -many- things do not work in my case that I don't trust this to be a working backup solution in case of a system crash in the future.

Succes!
Edwin.

[I use a lot of forums but have never seen one where one goes to the "last message" and doesn't see the message that was just reported via email???]

I have the WAIK on this computer and I built the WinPE disk with Acronis TI 2015v2 successfully. er ... I think because the process completed without complaining. Then I burned a CD from the .iso.
Then I put the CD in a computer where the USB drive was not seen using the Acronis Linux-based CD.
Windows began to start and then quit with some strange error.
So the WinPE disk appears to be even more useless.

Hi Guys,

Have you notice what the the title of this to this thread; it's called:

Rescue Media does not see my USB3 external hard drives

Can we stick to this subject; if you want to discus something else, do so on the appropriate thread!

???
The external drive I'm referring to that's not seen is USB3.
Neither CD seems to work.
Is that off topic?
This was about the endeavor to see the USB3 drive and the steps suggested to do that. This step failed.

OK, Fred, but lets make it clear to Acronis that we are have problems with USB 3; have you posted a private message to the Acronis Forum Support Engineer (Anna) - See comment #283 on the previous page.

I am not trying to cause any offence by my previous comment, but wish to keep Acronis focused on non detection of USB 3 drives

I get the feeling that Acronis believe my observations on this subject are a rarity; that is why she asked if others, besides me (the originator, of this thread) are experiencing this problem.

i just updated my ATI 2015 to build 6613 and just used the builtin Rescue Media builder from Windows 7 SP1 to build the normal (I guess Linux, WinPE) rescue media CD. When trying it out after a reboot of the PC using the Rescue Media CD it now shows me my Seagate USB 3.0 external drive and I was able to navigate to my backups (.TIB). For this Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 user it is working as it did with ATI 2014 and earlier. Just my 2 cents.

After reading this entire thread I am wondering why I purchased True Image 2015. It doesn't see my USB3 drive from the rescue disk as well. I am not prepared to spent hours running experiments to get this to work. All of my backups are on this drive and if my system crashes I will not be able to use TI2015. I have read that there is supposed to be an update from Acronis shortly after Win 10 is officially released (in a few days). I'll wait till then. If that doesn't work I will switch to a competitor and never buy an Acronis product again.

It's like you read my mind! I agree with you 100%, and that is my plan also. But, I have already switch to a competitor, and, am very pleased (Please see my earlier post about this).

Earlier today I typed up an additional post (from my earlier posts), but decided not to post it. I felt it was too negative. Your post is very polite, and says it all.

Mike Wilkins, and Sheldon Blisker, have you posted a private message to the Acronis Forum Support Engineer (Anna) - See comment #283 on the previous page.

I believe that Acronis think that they have cleared this issue, and that it only me that experiences this problem. It is important that others report this issue to Anna, via a personal message!

Hi,

I was pretty annoyed, but decided to give Acronis a second chance. I had two software options in mind: Acronis True Image (ATI) and NovaStor Backup (NB), and now I've tried them both. I did do an actual image recovery for both. For my 2 computers, NovaStor isn't much better as it comes to disaster recovery. Also this program could not make the drive boot-able. So for both I needed to use the W81 rescue USB flash drive to do the trick.
For normal backup data Novastor uses the dirty Achive bit of each file and their GUI is unnecessary complex. I really dislike this archive bit because if it is reset by some other action/program then NB, a backup of the particular file is -not- made!
I tested this for ATI and ATI seems to use the previous backup files to determine what it needs to backup now.

For ATI image recovery, I guess for now the best option is to create the WIN-PE boot disc - and- and Windows 7 or Windows 8 rescue disc. Note W8 can only create a rescue usb- flash drive.
- And of course -test- if you can boot the Win-PE disc and access your external drive backups.
- Even better to test the whole rescue exercise, but that involves swapping HDD's in your laptop or computer.

An other thing to know: Acronis has this forum and does respond to support mails. NovaStor doesn't have any forum and their support is Jurassic Fence shielded.

i have had this problem ever since the Nov 2014 release of this product ... Boot disk not recognising my Seagate External HDD. However after July's upgrade/fix the problem is now fixed. A 'basic' based boot disk now does what its supposed to ... recognise my external HDD. So i can now bin the slow Win-PE boot disk and use the fast 'basic' one, and sleep easy at night knowing if i have a crash i can get back up and running within the hour.

After much frustration and much anxiousness in waiting (months!) for a fix to the problem of the rescue media boot disk created by TI2015 not seeing my Seagate Backup Plus 5TB (USB 3.0) external hard drive, I can report that the latest update (Build 6613) actually resolved the problem for me. My USB 3.0 external drive is now visible when using the rescue media disk.

I feel a bit relieved, however, this whole experience with how long it took to fix and the lack of communication from Acronis does not leave me with the same confidence in their products that I used to have.

It's also hard to to get over the bitterness of the all nighter I had to pull when visiting my mother earlier this year and attempting to provide her some IT support. I did a clean install of her computer and figured it would be good to create a nice clean image of the fresh install state. I purchased TI2015 for her and a Seagate Backup Plus 2TB (USB 3.0) portable hard drive. As you can imagine, after all my efforts it wasn't fun (or comfortable) to find that the Seagate drive wasn't at all visible by the Rescue Media at that time......and the tinkering to figure out what the heck was going on and making alternative backup plans.

Fortunately, it works now. I hope it sorts out for those of you who still have issues.

I just found this thread. I found it because I have the same problem of the Linux recovery media not seeing my Western Digital MyBookLive USB 3.0 3TB drive. I've read only the 1st 20 or so posts and the last 5 or so. Is there any solution mentioned other than using a WinPE recovery system or switching vendors? TI 2016 was just released. Does a Linux recovery system built under TI 2016 work any better then the 2015 version?

Right now I'm fine recovering individual files, but I'm toast if I have to do a full recovery.

Some users have experienced a lag or delay in recognition of a USB 3.0 device using the boot media. You might try waiting a bit longer on the destination screen to see if the drive appears. Another thing you might try is with your machine shutdown disconnect the drive from the machine. Boot the machine with the recovery media and once booted then attach the drive to the machine, wait a bit and see if now appears.

Thanks for the suggestion. The delayed connection of the USB 3 drive worked.

Seems like Acronis should have fixed this,or at least provide a warning when the target drive has a USB 3 connection. This has apparently been a known problem for a long time.

Hi Everyone!

As the originator of this thread, I would like to provide a summery, and my conclusion!

I discovered this problem, shortly after 2015 was released.

After a considerable time, Anna, An Acronis Forum Support Engineer, at post #283 asked me to send her a personal message, following which she provided me a link. This link allowed me to download an ISO image, for a Boot media. Version 6567 - This was in May 2015.

This boot media worked perfectly; I could see both of my Seagate USB 3 external drives, on every occasion!

Next, Acronis updated TI to build 6613 - Clearly a later version than 6567.

The boot media created from 6613, failed again, to see my Seagate USB 3 external drives - Acronis appear to have taken a step back!

What next! Well I receive an Email from Acronis, advertising the new release of 2016.

As this comes with the option of a 30 Free trial, I thought that I would try it out.

Low an behold, it looks good. More surprisingly, they allow you to create a Boot Media, that works (It may stop, after the 30 day trial)

The interesting point, is that when you boot with this media (A CD - I could not boot from a Flash drive, which I created), you are given several options; two of which are:

Acronis True Image

and

Acronis True Image 64 bit.

I have tested both these options, out "Four" times.

On all occasions Acronis True Image failed to see my Seagate USB 3 drives.

However, Acronis True Image 64 bit, could see all of my drives, on every occasion!

QED - I have a Windows 10, 64 bit operating system!

It is clear to me that the issue is associated with whether you have a 32, or 64 bit operating system.

I can only conclude that the download Anna supplied, that is Build 6567 was a 64 bit version, and that all other versions of Acronis 2015, don't have the inclusion of 64 bit operating system compatibility.

Could it be that those user, who have no problem view Seagate USB 3 drives, are those with 32 bit operating system; and those who cannot see their Seagate USB 3 drives, are those with 64 bit operating systems!

Some may say I'm talking through my butt, but I suggest you trial the 2016 version, and produce a recovery media - Acronis may soon inhibit boot media creation, as the did on previous trial versions!

I'm pleased to report that the file AcronisTrueImage2015_6613_en-US.exe worked for me, its bootable media creation (after installation on a system running 64 bit Win7) indeed created a boot CD that would recognize my seagate USB3 drive, after some delay, but not a ridiculous one. So they do seem to be making progress!

Are you saying that the 64 bit recovery system is Windows rather than Linux?
(I'm not sure it matters as long as it works. But it's interesting.)

I can believe that the Acronis USB 3 support could be tied to 64 bit, but I don't think it has to be. I'm pretty sure 32 bit operating systems have USB 3 drivers. (But that doesn't mean the drivers work!)

On the other hand, support for drives larger the 2.2 TB is definitely related to 32 bit vs 64 bit operating systems. Games had to be played (and not always successfully) to access over 2.2 TB in a 32 bit operating system.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your comments.

Reference your:- "Are you saying that the 64 bit recovery system is Windows rather than Linux?"

I haven't a clue! Just stating the facts - Only the 64 bit option can see my Seagate USB external drives.

I'm just an ancient pensioner meddling in things I don't understand; but, I do question why Acronis has put two versions, in their 2016 boot media, if it is not relevant!

Interesting (and probably irrelevant), I just discovered that the 2015 recovery system could not read an old Seagate 2 TB USB 2.0 drive of mine. Sometimes it would see it but validation would fail. Other times it would report unrecoverable I/O errors while trying to discover drives. TI 2015 (and 2014) under Windows had no trouble writing to it so I assumed I was protected from disasters. Good thing I finally checked. Luckily this was on an old, seldom used PC with intermittent hardware problems (which is why it is seldom used).

I thought Seagate was one of the good brands. I've since switched to Western Digital for external drives for no obvious reason and have had no trouble with them.

And I'm an ancient retiree (without the pension) trying to understand these things I'm meddling in. Very similar there, I'd say (except for the pension :-) ).

I'd guess the 2 options are probably very relevant.  They've fixed the driver in the 64 bit version, but have to give those with only 32 bit processors the 32 bit option.  I would think kernel could tell when which kind of processor it was running on, but maybe I'm being naive.

Patrick, Seagate certainly is one of the big brands in hard drives. I'd be shocked if this problem is due to something wrong with those drives. It's almost certainly some failure with ATI. (I'm not a computer professional, so this is just my opinion). I'm using WD external drives and so far so good- especially since I had to do a full restore of my SSD boot drive after some software upgrade trashed it. I've had to do this now on 3 different computers with ATI, some were with older versions of ATI. Each time I didn't breath until the process completed.

My two cents worth: It has been previously established that this issue has hardly anything to do with hard drives, Seagate or not. Everything points out to a software issue and Acronis is definitely on the picture... If you go back a few pages and read the posts, you'll reach the same conclusion.
In my case, for instance, I encountered this problem first with TI 2015 and my external drive was NOT Seagate. Then with 2015's most recent version, the problem was solved for me and I never experienced the same problem again.

I'm a pensioner myself (or a retiree with a pension -- at least for the time being...) :)) And I keep doing my homework as hard as I can... .))

I know this is off-topic for this thread so I apologize, but I thought ATI was graphics support. In any case, the particular Seagate drive had no problem under Windows to 2 different PCs, but could not be read by the recovery system on either of the PCs. On one, validation failed; on the other (at a later time) the I/O errors occurred. I have no reason to assume all Seagate products have problems, but I think this one does. It's old - 4 or 5 years old. Maybe its time is up.

But since this particular drive is a 2 TB USB 2.0 device, it has nothing to do with the thread topic. (But finding that the recovery system could not read the Seagate drive prompted me to check my WD 3TB USB 3.0 drive, and the fact that I couldn't read it is very much on-topic.)

I have found the same problem. 6TB USB3 drive, booted to 2015 rescue media, drive is seen and I can see the file system but immediate read errors on restore when connected to USB3 slot. When connected to USB2 slot I am able to start to read the backup files but they give a read error, complaining about a sector read problem at around the 3TB boundary!
I'm working through this all now and am relieved to see that it is likely no my backup disk that is screwed, so I am in the process of using another system to copy the backup files I need to restore onto a smaller USB2 drive so I can (hopefully) restore my system.
I'll update the thread with my eventual status... it's going to take a few hours.

Exact same backup file copied to a smaller drive and connected via USB2 worked just fine. Interestingly (and annoyingly) enough though, I tried the TI2016 trial and couldn't see any difference in behavior from the recovery disk, even when I selected the 64-bit option.

Hi John,
Welcome to Acronis Forum.
Very interesting. I gather that you're saying that TI2016 could not see your external 6-TB drive thru USB3 but could see it if you use a USB2 connection? If so, would it be fair to conclude that TI2016 may have come out with the same problem as all Acronis prior to version 6613 of TI2015?
It would be too bad to be true, though perhaps not impossible... I sincerely hope it's not the case.
Or would the sheer size of your external drive have anything to do with it? Does seem likely, though...

It could see it... and it turned out that somehow I'd ended up with TWO corrupt backups of the same drive, which was causing the errors I saw :(

I haven't been closely following this (very long) thread carefully. Please forgive me if the following comments are irrelevant or have already been mentioned.

Many, if not all, drives above 2GB capacity have 4K segment size rather that 512B. The Backup and Recovery utility on Windows 7 and earlier could not create a system image backup on such drives (although it had no trouble with other kinds of backups). Maybe Acronis has some similar problem.

Some drives have firmware for such drives that can emulate the 512B segment size, but that option has to be specifically selected before the drive is formatted. Not a useful solution if the drive already has data on it. And if that is going to cause problems, it should cause them regardless of the connection - USB 2 or USB 3.

Some 32 bit operating systems (such as all 32 bit Windows, I think) can address only 2.2GB of data on a hard drive. I have no idea what the symptoms are when a larger drive is hooked up, but if Windows can't handle the drive, Acronis running on that Windows with certainly have problems.

Just a couple thoughts to throw out.

Acronis boot media with Seagate 3tb drive model SRD00F2 in usb3 port

2014 rescue media loads fine and can see usb3 port and disk load time 55secs from clicking on Acronis 2014

2015 build 6613 with drive in usb2 port loads ok 1.22 mins
2015 build 6613 with drive in usb3 port after 4 mins after clicking Acronis 2015 gave up as it wouldn’t load hourglass on and clock spinning

2016 latest build 6520 same results using 32 bit or 64 bit but works in usb2?

Conclusion.........................

2015 and 2016 DOES NOT SUPPORT USB3 or the software has changed significantly to now not recognise it. Seems the fault is still there.

Thanks Joe, trying to beat them up about this as it works in USB2 but not in usb3 , works in either using 2014. They have changed something here but just won't admit there's a problem. Maybe newer drivers to work with more modern hardware. If you plug it in after the media has loaded and pick recovery then browse it will show no usb but will appear after a while if you Hot plug it in. If 2015 was designed for 8.1/10 windows they should have said DONT upgrade if your using Win 7 stick with 2014 as the highest safe software. My hardware won't work with windows 10 so I returned to win 7 so same applies hardware is not compatible with later software?

John, though I'm doing OK with Acronis 2015- I now wish I had gone with Macs years ago. I'm SO tired of the update rituals with PCs and all the associated problems. In the past few months I've had several major MS update problems- twice they bombed my PC and I was only saved by an Acronis full restore of my boot disk. I don't think this problem is nearly as common with Macs since Macs are better integrated with the companies that produce parts and software.

Update

After a few attempts with Acronis support. experimentation, etc etc etc,  i found that their product 2015 and 2016 32 and 64bit recognises the usb3 disk but must do some sort of disk check as i plugged an old 56gb disk in my usb3 seagate backup tray and it sees it after a short time, so i thought try varying sizes of hard drive, if you have the patience to wait a 3tb disk will finally be recognised in usb3 port after it does its sort of disk check. after 45mins. Acronis are still investigating this for me.

Just as a fix acronis 2014 has restored win 7 and win 10 for me no problems on various occasions!

As a footnote  windows 10 works fine with 2015 for backups and i have restored using 2014 on numerous occasions. Finally found out my ssd card was causing win 10 to freeze, worked fine on a HDD so acronis has been a great tool to diagnose this problem.

2016_5634 has been recognizing my usb3 drives without issues too (on 2 computers, one intel mobo, the other AMD).  Let's hope this problem stays fixed.

It's great that it's working... for a few.  Is it working in mas?

Unfortunatly, I have ATI 2015.  I've checked, and am not elligable for the free upgrade to 2016 ATI.  My only option is to purchase 2016 ATI at $42!  I'm not willing to spend another $42 on the chance it will work for me.  I might as well go to the casino - I'd probably get better ods there!

Wow.  You would think thy would cut me a break for upgrading a product that doesn't work!  But then, the software is only garunteed to load and execute!  That's correct, read the fine print!

It seems that we are treating Acronis ATI like a very old vase from the Ding dynasty...  very fragile, treated with the utmost care as not to upset or damage it, and, hoping no one else does, and hoping it does not get destroyed.

Maybe the next step would be to talk to my insurance agent to see if there is special insurance coverage specifically for recovery software failing!
