ATI 2017 backup fails

Thread solved

I am running ATI 2017, build 8058 on my Dell WIN10 PC.  Presently and over the last year or two, the back ups would fail and I would get an error message stating as such and a link to check for solution - the link would take me to the Acronis web page and bluntly state no answer exists.

I have in the past deleted the back up and set it up again, with success.  Now that is not even working.  My external HDD (1TB) has enough space - which begs another question - why can't you delete incremental back up files individually from Windows File Explorer?

I am by no means a "Jedi Master" at this, so if you can help - speak slow, use small words, bring crayons and pictures.....LOL.

Thanks,

Pat

Pat, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but too little information to understand why your backup task is failing at this point.

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on what is happening and maybe why?

If the log viewer doesn't help, or you don't understand the information shown, then please use the option to 'Save as log file' from the File menu, then attach to this topic via the File > Upload option.

Further information that will help us help you.

What version of Windows OS? (10, 8.1, 7, XP etc).

What are you backing up? (Disks & Partitions, Entire PC, Files & Folders).

What is the error message you are being shown?

Steve:

Thanks for the reply.

I am running Windows 10 and backing up Files and Folders was my goal (preserve digital pics and such).

I will attach the log, but what I have noticed is "file is read only" coming up repeatedly.  My back ups were working and then they stopped.

Only error message that came up was "an error has occurred" and i could click to find out more - which lead to the Acronis webpage and it did not have any info on the issue.

I hope I did this correctly (log file).

Let me know if you need other information.

Pat, thanks for the log file information.  This shows that the issue here is that your backup location is write protected, hence the read-only error.

| path: \\?\E:\My folders_full_b13_s1_v1.tib

| error 0xfff0: The media is write protected

Try writing a small text file to your E:\ drive to see if you can actually save it to that location?

You may need to do a CHKDSK E: /F for that drive.

Steve:

It is write protected.  See PNG file attached for results from CHKDSK.

Now the dumb question - how to remove the write protection.

Still wondering how it could write to it before and then not be able to write to that disk.

Thanks,

Pat

Pat, what type of drive is your E: drive?  Some drives may have a write-protect switch on the case (similar to that found on SD cards).  Beyond that, I would need to do some searching to see what else can cause this issue.

If you haven't already done so, try disconnecting / reconnecting the drive.  Try also doing a full shutdown and restart by holding the Shift key while clicking on shutdown, then start up again.

Steve:

WOW!  The unplugging and plugging back in did it!!!  I was able to run a back up - I am assuming things are back on track.

For the record, it is a 1TB Western Digital MyBook.

Not sure why what cause the "write-protect" mode to kick in.

Thank you for your assistance with this problem - "Legend" is a most fitting title for you!

Stay safe and healthy!!

Pat S.

Pat, that is good news that unplugging / reconnecting the drive has fixed the write-protect issue.  I have several WD MyBook drives sitting around but they normally sit on a shelf disconnected rather than being left attached to any computer, so haven't seen this issue myself.  Thanks for the feedback.
