MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 3.6.0)

I am confused. The images you show seem to indicate that you've already created the MVP Assistant rescue media on the DataTraveler drive as the drive label is what I put on the rescue media.
Can you please run the following PowerShell command...
get-wmiobject win32_volume | select-object driveletter, drivetype
I would expect to see a DriveType of 2 for the Drive E:

My apologies for any confusion. The stick in the USB drive is a recently created Acronis rescue media to see if Acronis could see the drive per Steve's earlier request.
Here's the MVP Assistant system configuration after I formatted the flash drive. Build USB is still greyed out.

There is a easy way around this issue as follows:
Create the rescue media via the standard Acronis builder tool.
Copy the .WIM file created by the MVP Assistant to replace the \sources\boot.wim on the USB stick.
Note: rename the MVP Assistant \Wim\winre.wim file to boot.wim

First, the fact that you had the label MVP_RESCUE on your drive tells me that at some point you were able to do a build to that drive from the MVP Assistant. That label is the one I use for rescue media, but would not be put there by Acronis' media builder.
Second, you mentioned packages and drivers had been committed but you did not mention applications. Did you run the install for the applications.
Third, if you switch back to EZ-Mode, is Auto Build USB Drive enabled? If so, try that build.
I'd be interested to see the project log file.
All that said, since the Build ISO menu item is enabled in Advanced mode, that tells me that the wim is not mounted and it also contains the minimum required components. It therefore appears that the WMI query is not finding any drives, yet it does appear to be there OK as shown by the PowerShell command. The query uses underlying Windows code. I just tried running the app on my system using Windows 11 Pro 22H2 and it works fine for me.
So no good answer yet.

I created a new bootable USB drive using the Acronis Rescue Media Builder in advanced mode choosing WinPE based media. I put this USB drive aside for the moment.
Then using the MVP Assistant, I started another project in E-Z mode. After acquiring the wim source I noted that Auto Build USB drive is greyed out.
I then switched to advanced, mode ultimately committing applications, drivers and packages. At this point the Build USB option was greyed out and the ISO option enabled as before. I closed this project. I tried to upload the log from the "Add new file" upload button, but am getting "The file could not be uploaded" message. Any tricks here would be appreciated.
Next, per Steve's suggested workaround, I booted from the image I built using the Acronis Rescue builder just to verify the USB drive was working. After booting, this hung as it previously has trying to launch the Acronis executable. I then copied the wim image from the MVP Assistant project (above) and used it to replace the wim image in the Acronis Rescue drive. I then tried to boot this USB drive and discovered that the drive no longer shows up in BIOS as bootable. I retested this and the results are the same. Replacing the win image with a different one renders the drive unseen as a boot device option.
Grasping at straws I ran sfc /scannow and dism and found no problems.
Any further suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks again.

Just copying the .wim file created by the MVPA to the USB stick to replace the original boot.wim should have no effect on the USB showing as being bootable.
All the original files & folders created on the USB by either method should still be present with only the content of the \Sources folder being changed, i.e. the MVP .wim will be larger than the one created by the Acronis builder.

The fact that I had the label MVP_RESCUE on my USB drive might be explained by my originally using MVP Assistant v186 to build my recovery media.
- Log in to post comments

The MVP builder V186 is not the MVP Assistant. It is something completely different. I don't have it on my system now but I am not so sure it used MVP_RESCUE as the boot drive label. Perhaps someone else could verify.
To upload the project log, it should work if you make it a .txt file.
Just to be sure, you have said you committed the image, but are you sure it is unmounted. You should not be able to build if the image is still mounted. On the other hand, you should not be able to build an ISO if it is mounted either so that still does not make sense.

Steve, I started afresh and tried your suggestion again. The results are the same. If I replace boot.wim from the Acronis Recovery Media Builder with the winpe.wim from the MVP Assistant, the USB drive simply doesn't show up as a device in the boot list. If I then replace boot.wim with the original, the USB drive show up in the boot list.
I've tried this with both the WinPE and WinRE options in the build. I've also tested this with Secure Boot off. The behavior is still the same.
I'm running Windows 11 Pro 22H2. The laptop is a Lenovo 22CB.
Thanks.

Sorry but I cannot think of any reason why just replacing the .wim file should prevent the USB drive from being shown in the laptop boot list?
I am assuming that you kept the Boot Method as default of Either on the lower panel of the MVP Assistant builder?

If you can create an ISO, do that. Then mount the ISO and copy it all to a freshly formatted thumb drive. Give it the label MVP_RESCUE. It should boot fine. I just did it and it worked perfectly.
As for Steve's suggestion, I don't recommend that because there are things in my MVP Assistant build that are not part of the wim file so it won't boot quite the same.

My mistake. MVP_ATIPEBuilder uses WINPE as the boot drive label.
Back to MVP Assistant, the USB drive I've been using is actually an Intel SSD connected by an enclosure-based SATA bridge. It has worked reliably on everything, except it seems MVP Assistant. If I replace my SATA based USB drive with a "real" flash drive, voila, amazingly, MVP Assistant sees the drive and USB Build is enabled for both E-Z mode and Advanced mode.
I used E-Z build to create my first bootable USB drive, booted and attempted to recover my c: partition. That ended with an error that I couldn't see because of the small window size, so I rebooted to my real c: drive only to discover that the BIOS found the drive unusable, and its auto-healing attempt failed.
I'm somewhat discouraged, back to doing a factory refresh of my machine.
- Log in to post comments

And I'd still like to recover my c: partition from my latest backup, which is what this exercise has been all about.
Thanks again for your collective help.

Is the backup you are trying to recover to C: created by ACPHO under Windows or from a rescue drive?
Your system is a UEFI boot (not Legacy BIOS). Did you boot the recovery media as UEFI before running the recovery? The boot mode of the recovery media must match that of the system, else it will change things in the C: drive on recovery.
As for the small window size, it is advisable with a recovery media to be sure it works well, including resolutions, before any major operations. If you include the Display Settings application (included by default), that gives you access to SetRes and SetDPI to adjust the display if the original setting from the builder does not work well.

Success!!
In answer to your question about booting the recovery media as UEFI, yes, I did that. The error turned out to a bad copy of the backup source, which I discovered by validating it.
An ironic side note, ACPHO quarantined MVPAssistant. I had to laugh.
My compliments on what you've created with MVPAssistant 2.6.1. I hope it soon replaces the older version in the ACPHO 3rd party tools.
My heartfelt thanks for your always quick help.

Glad to hear you have it working well for you and have achieved success!
ACPHO knows nothing about the MVP Assistant. My program is not an Acronis program. You just need to white list it.
I too hope it can be better supported as a third party tool.
Thank for your thanks. It's nice to be appreciated once in a while.

Have old Dell Desktop and newer Dell LapTop. Some years past replaced the HDD in the old desktop, since original was failing. Although had Acronis TI 2018 full version, I successfully cloned to WD 1T HDD using their recommended short version "Acronis WD" from which created rescue CD that boots and implements Acronis WD with limited resources. Now want to replace HDD with SSD, but I am unable to create bootable rescue media (preferred USB) using either TI 2018 or MVP Rescue Media Builder. I tried all things, and just get black screen with blinking cursor from USB or DVD media. Had no issues with newer laptop, following same process using beta MVP Assistant including Rescue Media Builder (ADK components installed), it worked fine. Laptop booted (compatible Legacy BIOS selected in MVP) from USB and provided ability to open Acronis and other tools as selected in MVP. I noticed that the rescue file size generated with newer laptop was much larger than with older desktop (1.8GB vs. 718MB).
The old desktop has two recovery partitions, one D: recovery (15GB allocation) with Dell original factory image and the other apparently was created by WD Acronis (513MB). For one trial, I used “reagenc” tool to extract image, winre.wim, from the actual recovery partition (not D:) and used it as source in MVP, but it had same problem of not booting. It responded same as when I allowed Acronis 2018 to acquire it. I am not sure why for TI 2018, MVP cannot include Acronis as with later versions, so I thought it would be necessary to let it Acquire winre.wim and then MVP would add Acronis. During process of using MVP, Acronis was not listed as being included.
I realized something else. If I used F12 with older desktop that allows specifying where to boot from (both newer and older computers are legacy BIOS) and select the bootable USB created with MVP Assistant, it results in forever black screen/w blinking cursor and does not boot. However, if I allow boot in sequence with removable media first priority, it times out due to boot failure from USB and then computer boots with limited "Acronis WD" resources (Linux?) via the recovery partition of HHD.
Before cloning to SSD, Acronis warns to be sure to have a workable rescue media and why I have been trying for long time to achieve. I really would like to create bootable USB rescue media using MVP Assistant to include more resources, but like some others it just seems impossible. One other noted that with older computer had exact problem and stated he could only get rescue with Linux and very disappointed. Is this what is happening here too? But I can’t even make USB rescue media with Acronis that will boot on older computer. I have been using Acronis for very long time, making a lot of backups for this old computer since new, so seems I should have ability to make USB rescue if this HHD totally fails (so far successfully used CHKDSK to repair). Do I have to feel comfortable only with the limited rescue CD created with WD Acronis? It would seem that I have not much use for the D: recovery partition and can delete it, since factory condition is really going too far back (win7 upgraded to win10). I should be able to trust Acronis to restore from backups, even if HHD totally fails. I just am not comfortable with inability to create rescue media that would be necessary if HHD does totally fail. Is there any help?

In the past was able to add "Universal Restore" and "Disk Director 12.5" to MVP builder V186. Given now using MVP Assistant 2.6.2, then wish to know if anyone knows how to add "Disk Director 12.5" to MVP Assistant 2.6.2.

William, if you are willing to accept that Disk Director 12.5 is an obsolete product that Acronis have not updated since 2019, then you could consider using an alternative partition manager tool such as the free Macrorit Partition Expert tool using the following XML with the MVP Assistant rescue media builder tool (copy the XML below to a .xml file in Notepad then Import it from the Advanced customisation panel.
Note: the two individual .dll files need to be copied from C:\Windows\System32\ to the same folder where the MacroritPE.zip file is stored.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Applications> <App name="MacroritPE" description="Macrorit Partition Expert" visible="yes" optional="yes" autoinstall="no"> <Source filename="MacroritPE.zip" url="https://disk-tool.com/download/mde/mde-free-portable.zip" /> <Source filename="msi.dll" /> <Source filename="oledlg.dll" /> <Install> <Zip source="MacroritPE.zip" /> <File source="msi.dll" destination="%ProgramFolder%\mde-free-portable\x64\msi.dll" /> <File source="oledlg.dll" destination="%ProgramFolder%\mde-free-portable\x64\oledlg.dll" /> <LaunchButton name="MacroritPE" command="%ProgramFiles%\MacroritPE\mde-free-portable\x64\dm.exe" /> </Install> <Uninstall> <DeleteProgramFolder /> </Uninstall> </App> </Applications>

Steve, et al.,
These two lines of the XML installation:
<Source filename="msi.dll" /> <Source filename="oledlg.dll" />
may be changed to:
<Source filename="C:\Windows\System32\msi.dll" /> <Source filename="C:\Windows\System32\oledlg.dll" />
It is then not necessary to copy them.

Hi Steve,
A little clarification of the process...
The commands before the <Install> section are where you define what goes into the install. The app will then move everything into a temporary install folder. It is from that folder that the commands within <Install> work, hence no explicit path there.

Bruno,
Nice work on the new version - I really appreciate the addition of Acronis Configuration. It's so easy and fool-proof to adjust required services.
Steve,
Great tip on addition of MacroritPE. A great time saver and works perfectly for usual needs.

Thanks, CC. Shutting these unused features off is a nice improvement.
Note that pretty much any 64 bit app that can run under Windows PE can easily be installed by setting up the control file.

Hi Guys and I am really liking this new Tool, A few questions...I am using MVP Assistant tool v2-7-3-0 with Win11
If we have Disk Director Is there a way to add in Acronis Disk Director?
I see in the Settings area under Rescue Media an "Advanced Customization" button and it looks like we can add in Applications? Maybe? Is there documentation on this?
Notes I found out on this:
As for adding Disk Director to a build, this isn't possible as Disk Director is a 32bit (x86) program. Additional applications are added to MVP Assistant using an XML application control file and it is possible to add 64bit-only applications in the Settings area under the Rescue Media tab and select "Advanced Customization". Again be aware that the Rescue Builder only supports 64-bit, so any application added must be compiled in 64-bit in order to run in the Builders created media. Even the latest version of Disk Director 12.5 b163 is 32bit so it WONT install into the MVP Assistant, and since Disk Director has now reached its "end of life" and is no longer supported, using something like Macrorit is a good option and will install into MVP Assistant
What does the Application "Maintain Acronis Settings" allow or disallow if unselected?
Thanks for such a great tool!

I am really liking the New Assistant builder v2.7.3.0 Thanks for the improvements!
Question about the MVP Assistant Builder 2.7.3.0
I see in the Applications menu "Maintain Acronis Settings"
How does this work? What settings are maintained? what should I see when enabled?
Thanks

Bob, the Maintain Acronis Settings option is intended to allow users who change display settings while in the WinPE environment to save those settings to use at a future time when using the same media.
Note: this can only work when using read/write boot media so won't work if booting from optical media such as a DVD as the settings are saved to the boot device.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for posting, we are glad you like the MVP Assistant utility.
You have questions concerning the boot media builder feature of the Assistant. Specifically, what is the Maintain Acronis Settings used for and is it possible to add Disk Director to a media build with the Rescue Builder feature?
The Maintain Acronis Settings as Steve says is aimed at those who wish to apply Apperance changes (namely font changes) to the Acronis application in the boot media and have those settings applied the next use of the media. To accomplish that we write the selected settings in the Appearance setting of the Acronis application to the physical boot medium itself. It is anticipated that most users will at this point create media on a USB flash drive however, CD/DVD is still in use by some. I believe the jury is still out on whether or not saved Acronis settings can be recalled if using CD/DVD medium as this was not tested during development.
As for adding Disk Director to a build, that should be possible. Additional applications are added using an XML application control file and it is possible to edit this file to add other applications. Be advised however that the Rescue Builder only supports 64 bit so any application added must be compiled in 64 bit in order to run in the Builders created media. I believe the latest version of Disk Director 12.5 supports 64 bit so that should work here.
Please see the Help>Rescue Media>Advanced Customization> Application Control XML Syntax file for details on how to add applications beyond what is offered out of the box.
Hope this helps!

Subject: How to Upgrade MVP Assistant
MVPAssistant_2-6-2-0
MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0
Windows Pro 10 and 11
I had a MVPAssistant_2-6-2-0 folder, and created a new MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0 folder.
It is unclear if I can open projects created by MVPAssistant_2-6-2-0 using the MVPAssistant.exe from the new MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0 folder.
Both MVPAssistant_2-6-2-0 and MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0 use the same MVP Assistant Data Folder.
Settings | General tab | MVP Assistant Data Folder: C:\Programata\MVP Assistant
What is the project and MVPAssistant.exe compatibility between versions?
Thank you for the feedback.

John,
You can update without problem whether you put the new version in a new folder or the same. You can double check the folders in the settings and as long as you have the same data folder you should be good to go with all prior settings.
The project is compatible as well.
FYI, I expect to have 2.7.4 coming out in the next few days.

Subject: Logitech Pop Mouse Not Recognized with WinRE Rescue Flash Drive
MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0
Windows Pro 11
ASUS ProArt Studiobook H7600ZW-DB76
The following is a quick description of what I did using my Logitech Pop Mouse (using Bluetooth) throughout the workflow.
MVPAssistant_2-7-3-0
Advanced Mode
Image source: WinRE Build Windows 11-22H2
Configuration panel | Applications
I check everything.
Image | Mount image
Drivers | Deep analyis... Note typo: "Deep analyis..." should say "Deep analysis..."
Note: I avoid Analyze... because it sporadically crashes for some unknown reason on various PCs.
Note: I have not had time to determine why.
Drivers panel | Suggested Updates
I check everything.
Hoping that all the drivers necessary for the Pop Mouse to work will be installed.
Drivers | Apply chosen suggested updates
Applications | Process queued installs
Image | Commit changes
Image | Unmount image
Build | Build USB drive.
Boot into USB rescue drive
The Logitech Pop Mouse (using Bluetooth) does not work.
Perhaps, in the above steps, I missed doing something obvious.
Thank you in advance for any feedback.

John, thanks for this information. Some comments to your input...
It's not necessary to check everything under the applications... only the ones you want in the boot media.
I just fixed that spelling error for the next version. Hard to believe those things can slip by us for so long.
I don't know why the Analyze crashed... next time try to capture the exception so I can try to determine what happened. Generally, Deep analysis is not required.
The suggested updates are what are called "boot critical" drivers which are not up to date. In most cases, it doesn't matter so including them is generally optional.
When you unmount the image, the updates are committed (unless the Discard changes menu item is checked) so no need to explicitly commit first.
As for the mouse issue... look at the Online drivers under Bluetooth, Mouse and HID class, specifically the ones in green. Look for a Logitech driver which is not in the list of Image drivers. That's what you probably want to install. It might be that the Logitech Bluetooth driver is the missing piece. I don't believe these are "boot critical" so thy would not show up on the suggested list. To install it, right click on the driver in the Online drivers list to add it to the suggested driver list. Then check it there and install.
Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

John, there's no Bluetooth support in WinPE/RE. Adding Bluetooth drivers doesn't work. You'll need to use another type of mouse for your rescue media.

Mustang, thanks for bringing that up. I use the Logitech Unifying Receiver wireless mouse/keyboard and it works fine in the rescue media.

I can confirm that Logitech Unifying Receiver wireless mouse/keyboard does work in PE/RE. I can also confirm that Bluetooth does not.

Will this work with the Snap Deploy like the older MVP did?
- Log in to post comments

Keith,
No such luck. I'm surprised to see this question. Are you in a corporate environment or are you a home user? I'd love to hear more about how you use Snap Deploy.
I was under the impression that I'd wasted my time making the older MVP Tool support Snap Deploy and Acronis Backup and Restore. I thought most, if not all, corporate users wouldn't trust or be allowed to use third party apps. for security reasons.
I can tell you the biggest problem with making multiple Acronis programs work in the same WinPE is finding the version of Acronis drivers that will work with all the programs. Acronis uses drivers with the same name in all their programs. This is a big mistake in my opinion. They don't pay any attention to backwards compatibility or whether the drivers will port from one product to another. I recently learn that my old version of Snap Deploy 5 wasn't compatible with the latest build of ACPHO. I don't know if Snap Deploy 6 could be made to work with it.

BrunoC wrote:Tell me what else you want to see.
I would like to see two things:
- If i use ACPHO (40729) to get MVP via Tools > Third-party-tools i am sent to Acronis KB59335. The version i can download there is version 1.0.1. I expect 2.7.4 today.
- I would like to see an option to use MVP to edit backup scripts.
For example, when creating a file&folder backup there is no option in ACPHO to add let´s say date and time to the resulting .tib file. Under <volumes locations> in the script file i would like to change from "@task@.tib" to "@task@--@date@--@time@_.tib" to get the names of the .tib files as i want. It would be great if it could be done even if the protection part of ACPHO is installed.
See more here: Add Date and/or Time to ACPHO file - How? | Acronis Forum

1. This has been brought up with Acronis more than once.
2. I think the file renaming (or any editing of the script) may be a dangerous road to go down. And if protection is installed, it would not be very good if I could easily bypass it in my Assistant. For now though, I will ponder on it.

I may have found a bug in 2.7.4.0 and 2.7.5.1, the only versions i have tried.
Issue:
If i run MVPAssistant as Administrator > go to Log Viewer > click on Demon in the left pane all logs show up in the right pane in the UI as expected. However, if i double click on any log in the right pane nothing happens.
Expected result:
If i click on any log i expect it to "open" and show me everything in there.
Workaround:
Don´t just click on the word Demon, click on the +-sign to the left of Demon to twirl out all logs and single click on any of them in the left pane of the UI.
Additional info:
If i run MVPAssistant by just double clicking on it, iow not giving it Administrator privileges i can open the logs when i double click on them in the right pane. One could have expected the opposite, iow running as Admin=Click to open while running as non-Admin=Cannot open.

Roger,
Your report on the Log Viewer behavior is not repeatable on my end. Having said that I have some suggestions for you.
To run the Assistant in Administrator mode I make two changes to the app properties. Either will suffice:
- I like shortcuts to the app so I first right click on the MVPAssistant.exe file in the program folder and select Properties>Compatibility and tick the Run as Administrator box. This will run the app as admin whenever you start it.
- Once the above is accomplished I right click on the same file and select Create shortcut. The shortcut will be created in the parent folder. I then right click on the new shortcut and select Pin to taskbar as that is my preferred shortcut location.
The help file tells the user that you MUST run the app as admin. It is up to the user to do that and the above is the simplest way to make that happen.

Roger, I am not seeing the behavior you report either.
A quick note to Enchantech's last statement. You do not need to run the app as Administrator, but there is functionality that will not be available if you don't, e.g. Rescue Media Builder, use of Scheduler Manager in Acronis Configuration.

Note to Bruno:
Technically you are correct. I used the word MUST to stay in context with Roger's post, he obviously is using it in a fashion requiring elevated permissions.
For FULL functionality of the app you MUST run the app as Administrator. :>)

Hi,
I'm very glad that I found this helpful tool, cause the official Acronis one is refusing to let me integrate any drivers.
But I'm facing some issues with the additional applications. After a basic test run I started updating / modifying them to suit my needs. But I noticed double entries in the launchbar left to the power button.
After carefullly watching the process I noticed directly after mounting the WIM that 3 applications are already listed in the queue. These are the ones with double entries.
This is strange, cause my selection also includes PE Network / IrfanView, but not Notepad2
And the final queue looks like
After some research I assumed that the autoinstall=YES setting might be the issue, but in all three cases its set to NO in the XML files. Till now I haven't found a way to disable the predefined applications. Any ideas?
Another issue is that I want to delete a specific file after boot, but this line in the Install section doesn't work for me:
<BootCommand command="del" args="X:\Windows\SysWOW64\CredentialUIBroker.exe" />
A third issue is the PE Network App:
I had to modify the XML script, so that it doesn't download the clean installation from the official website every time and I can provide an custom PENetwork.ini with the zip file. Although I set PENetwork to load a specfic profile on startup it won't work.
When I start PE Network manully after boot it does some stuff and closes. After a second start it stays open, so that I can load the profile. What's going is on? Is the Network not ready?

Ralf,
You say you've been modifying the apps. What have you changed in the XML? If you change the app name, it will be considered something different and that could cause this issue. Or, did you change installation folder?
I don't know about the file delete question at this point. BootCommands are fussy about what can work.
I don't know how PENetwork.ini is used.
If there is nothing private, are you able to attach your UserAppList.xml from the MVP Assistant data folder? This would show me a lot.

Hi Bruno,
I changed only the descriptions and not the apps name.
PENetwork.ini is the configuration file for PENetwork. It can contain for example the credentials to connet to network shares by loading on startup or the name of the workgroup.
