system is not hibernating while background monitoring is enabled

Thread needs solution

enabled background monitoring causes frequent disk checks and thus prevents system to be considered idle. thus automatic suspending nor hibernating works any more. disabling background monitoring resolves the issue. can anyone give me any workaround? (P4, win xp pro, fresh install). I have such experiences with different utilities. acronis is best of them concernig features but is also one of those idle-killers.

Hi Andy,

I agree, the monitoring interval is not user configurable and happens every minute so DM stops sleep or hibernate. ATIH Non stop backup will also have the same effect I suspect.

Using W7 Ult 64 bit, my system still sleeps with ADM running. Perhaps a problem that shows itself in XP only.

Colin

I am also using W7 64bit Professional but I cannot use DM now as I found it screws up USB attached disks - they don't work when attached.

So I cannot look again until the issue is resolved (which it currently is not)

It is possible that the problem exists on the XP machines only. But we (XP-users I mean) are still here! :)

Maybe it would be worth to allow user to configure the check frequency. I think that one minute is far to often. 15-30 minutes would be just fine. Hope any R&D member reads the forum to make the software even better.

@ACRONIS DEVELOPERS - can you think of inserting a simple option to allow one to choose how many minutes the check interval will last? Would be great to be able to use the live-monitor. But now it is discussive because it interferes with regular power management settings while the computer is idle.

The problem is not exclusive to XP systems only.
I use Vista Ultimate SP2 32 bit and I had the same problem, Acronis Drive Monitor kept the computer from going into sleep mode.

I disabled "monitoring in the background" in Acronis Drive Monitor options, and now sleep mode is back as it should be.

Thanks very much for this thread.
I have been looking since about a month for what was blocking sleep mode. I had thought of Acronis Drive Monitor, but I had found no confirmation that it might be involved. Till I noticed this thread.

By the way, there was more than only sleep mode that was being obstructed by Acronis Drive Monitor keeping the computer non-idle.
As for one thing, daily restore points were not created, only the ones with system events such as Windows Defender updates.
And who knows what else was being obstructed.

Note that uninstalling Acronis Drive Monitor seems problematic also,
so probably better keep it installed, but with "monitoring in the background" disabled.

Dear Acronis,
Have you seen this topic, this thread?

Is there any chance of a solution for the mentioned problems, perhaps in a new build,
or should we consider this behavior of Acronis Drive Monitor (keeping the computer 'active', thus blocking sleep and daily restore points) as inherent to this program?

Dear Acronis,

I suppose you've noticed this thread and you know about the mentioned problems.
Wouldn't it be decent for Acronis to reply to this thread?

Thanks.

Does anybody really believes that they (Acronis) actually care about the users and quality of their FREE product? Regards to all of you guys (and girls) :)

Well, we have a new version 1.0.507, and... the problem persists. of course it is noticeable, that the checks are now less often. so if you set auto hibernation after eg. one minute - it works, but when the auto hibernate idle timer is 15 minutes - the in-between hdd check resets the idle timer like we already discovered. I do not have time to check when does the check occur exactly, and I do not know if I actually care. good job Acronis! Keep up the good work...

The idle timer resetting is easy to eliminate, as the system is considered idle when during given time period there is no imput from external devices and CPU usage is not getting higher than 10%. But of course Acronis product needs 100% of the 2GHz CPU to do the HDD check...

Thanks very much for the update, Andy.

Release notes/ "List of changes"

I don't understand why Acronis doesn't reply to this thread, "system is not hibernating while background monitoring is enabled".
Acronis does reply to other threads, like this one:
"Possible problem after uninstalling Drive Monitor"
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/11598

As I said before,
Dear Acronis,
I suppose you've noticed this thread and you know about the mentioned problems.
Wouldn't it be decent for Acronis to reply to this thread?
Thanks.

The changelog proves that they actually did nothing to solve the issue. Maybe the problem is impossible to solve for them... Then it is easier not to notice it...

An editor from a Dutch computer magazine, who contacted Acronis regarding Acronis Drive Monitor, told me that Acronis says that all reported bugs are known to Acronis and will be resolved in the next Drive Monitor update, a new version. That new Drive Monitor version should be expected for October or November, according to Acronis.

There has been no October or November Drive Monitor update.
It's still the buggy 1.0.0.507 that was released last 24 September 2010.

I don't think it is.

any ideas why? or is it only your personal opinion?

the reality is: the product has lots of bugs that numerous people are finding every day, but nobody is interested in fixing them.

you can say now: "if you don't like the product, you don't have to use it" and you will have a point there. but what is the purpose of issuing such products then?

Acronis have made no mention of not providing another build and they have got data on other users problems.

Hi all!

Thank you for your comments, and for being sincere in your feedback. We're sorry for the inconvenience you've faced with the product, and I will be glad to assist you.

Colin, thank you for your help.

Unfortunately we in support do not have any information, when the next update will be out, but there are no signs of product being abandoned.

I've carefully checked all our internal resources, and found no known issue that would match your description, so we need to have Development look closely into the problem. I have already forwarded them a message and as soon as I get any news from them, I'll immediately update you.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

My question is when do you plan to issue those changes? If you plan it of course...

Sorry but I a little pissed-off as my account password was deleted from acronis database, and I had to wait 3 hours to be sent a new one. BTW - is that a standard procedure or was my account "blocked" by "mistake" beacuse I had some remarks to the software? My general advice is - if you are not happy with customer-feedback, you can always close the forum. You don't have to delete people's passwords to stop them from moaning...

Would there be any news about Acronis Drive Monitor,
would there be done anything to fix the earlier problems?

Well, I notice there's a newer build, 1.0.0.566 (2011-03-01), newer than last year's build 507.
But the release notes are nowhere to be found.
Build 566 is mentioned, but the link to the release notes links to the build 507 release notes.
http://www.acronis.com/support/updates/

Has anyone found anything about build 566?
Were the earlier problems addressed in that build?

I noticed a related thread:
"Drive Monitor stopping HDD's from spinning down?"
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/23985

Not only does Acronis Drive Monitor keep the computer 'active', thus blocking sleep and even inhibiting the creation of daily restore points, but it seems it also keeps the HDDs from spinning down. That last symptom fits perfectly with those mentioned earlier.
And as stated before, the only way to address those issues is to disable "monitoring in the background" in Acronis Drive Monitor options.

It seems that Acronis has not corrected this problem or these problems with last year's build 1.0.0.566.
The product seems to be abandoned, or at least to be severely neglected.

Yes, sadly it is.

I refer you to what Acronis told me, as described in my last post here; forum.acronis.com/forum/33751#comment-106317
