Thread needs solution

I have not been able to make backups. Keep getting message snapshot storage is not large enough. VSS shows the space as unbounded and therefore should be plenty big enough. Also I have tried on 2tb internal hdd as well as 4tb external hdd. Get same message even though drives are new and mostly empty. Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

Tim, welcome to these public User Forums.

Try downloading & running the free Acronis VSS Doctor tool which should be able to help you better identify what actual snapshot issue is causing problems here?  Link below:

The tool will offer to fix any issues that it can fix.

Doing a full Windows restart can also help cleanup some snapshot type issues.

I have done all of the mentioned items in your response. VSS Doctor did not have any fix for the situation but did show some errors. I can run a backup without a snapshot but the directions indicate that is not wise for a full system backup. I did see that the windows VSS service was off in the services panel so will give that a try. Just do not know why past backups worked up until recently.

Tim, are you using ATI 2016 as per this forum, or is it a different version?

What do the logs for your backup task show?

Steve, I am sorry if this is the wrong forum. I am using ATI 2021 as for the logs I am not sure how to use them or find the ones needed. I am anxious to see if turning on VSS services in Windows 10 has helped though.

Tim, thanks for confirming your version of ATI.

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

If you could post the VSS Doctor report too, this would help us understand what errors are being reported.

Steve I have uploaded a zip file for VSSdoctor as well as the log file from the last attempted backup. I looked through several logs and they all have the same failure. Thanks

Tim, when you ran the VSS Doctor tool, did it offer an option to fix the VSS Storage issues identified and did you use this option?

From my own laptop:

Tim, the VSS Doctor report you provided does not show any issue with your C: drive, it shows:  IsOk: True for this drive.

It is your D:\ and E:\ drives which show as IsOk: False.

In the list of Disks (in the Disk I/O Load section). then it shows you have:

Disk 0 with C: & L: letters assigned.  IsOk: True

Disk 1 with E:  IsOk: True

Disk 2 with D:  IsOk: False.

Disk 3 with F:  IsOk: True

Disk 4 with K:  IsOk: True

Disk 5 with I:  IsOk: True

Disk 6 with M:  IsOk: True

Disk 7 with J:  IsOk: True

The next question has to be to ask what all these drives are being used for and why you need to have VSS storage allocated on D: & E: volumes?

Do you have Windows Protection enabled on these volumes?

Steve, C drive is all I really want backed up. D drive is for my photography work and is backed up in other places. E Drive is used for backups with Acronis True Image. The other drives are either partions or usb drives that I do not need. The way I understand it the C drive is the only place I should need to create a VSS snapshot for backup. This is not working even though there should be plenty of room on the drive. Can you verify where Acronis makes the VSS snapshot? Backups work if I do not use VSS, I can usually make them with AcronisVSS as well as without a snapshot. Acronis documentation says not to rely on backups that do not use VSS. This gets very frustrating. I have owned Acronis products since 2012 but have always had trouble keeping a reliable backup.

Tim, did you check the Windows Protection settings and if so, what drives have protection turned on on your PC?  I would recommend turning protection off on all drives except C: if you are still using this feature.  Microsoft defaults to having all protection turned off in all new installs of Windows 10 since around the last 3 years.

For your Acronis backup, what have you selected for the source?  Is it only the C: drive along with the hidden / system partitions?

Steve, the answer is the C drive is the only one with system protection turned on as that is the only one I need protected and C drive the hidden system files are the ones selected for ATI backup. I used to do full backup but it always adds the extra drives.

Steve, Just a thanks for the effort to help me out. In the long run I had to get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows and all my programs. That was the main reason for trying to get ATI up and running. I did not want to have to reinstall all apps and software. I believe in the need for a good backup program but once again even though I had tried to be prepared, I lost. Backups are running again but I sure need to come up with a dependable program.

Tim, while it is good news that you are back to having a working system and backups, I fully agree with your sentiments of needing a dependable program that works when it is needed!  It is unfortunate that you had to go through the whole new install / reinstall steps to get here!
