Backup of OneDrive Folders Fails

It suddenly seems that Acronis Cloud 2018 cannot backup any of my OneDrive folders. This was working until about a week ago. If I include any of the files from my OneDrive area Acronis Cloud Backup fails. If I unselect these files the backup to Acronis Cloud works fine.
Any suggestions please?

Same problem here. It looks like the new OneDrive functionality on choosing between a reference or the whole file to be downloaded locally gets in the way. Files may be seen as some sort of symlinks to a server. They may be in use all the time now. If anything: it's on the OneDrive side where things changed. Very unhappy about it. Not sure if it should actually use VSS in this situation but it doesn't.
The process in my case (B&R 11.7) gets stuck in such a way that I need to manually reboot my system after which I have to stop the schedule. Very annoying because MS themsel;ves tell us that OneDrive is not a BU solution. Yet it doesn't seem to allow you to backup either.
I leave this comment as I think Acronis should be able to use VSS, but the problem clearly originates at Microsoft.

Like Steve, I have not seen this problem, probably because I do not use One Drive. While it is definitely a problem due to the change in the way OneDrive works, it would be worthwhile putting a support request as the problem may be easily solved. My recollection is that Dropbox has used a similar system for years and I am unaware of any issues when backing up. If so there may be a mechanism to overcome the problem.

Well. That is actually my experience. I've been backing up the OneDrive since I aquired a license for Acronis somewhere in 2014. OneDrive has never been the problem. Yet my support has long gone expiered so I was hessitating to send in a request. Before I do I would like to get something out of the way.
I noticed that the mesages comming from Acronis are not always clear to me. I cannot seem to get it straight if the problem may be access to the drive where OneDrive resides, or if the access point in the Backup file is meant. I will send the exact statement in the log (not at home right now) and maybe someone can tell me what is meant.
If the actual OneDrie folder is meant I will do some further investigating and of course, I will leave a little report. Hopefully of how it's solved.

Kai Tchong, I have just created a full backup of my local OneDrive folder using ATI 2018 and this was 100% successful, so perhaps the issue here is whether all the contents of OneDrive are held locally or not? For me it is all locally held and I am not using the Files on Demand feature of OneDrive, so perhaps that is a part of this issue for some users?

That's good news! Though I liked my server to pick it up from the share on my Mediamachine so backing up doesn't use any of the resources except for the drive controllers and networkcard.
I turned off the Files on demand feature two days ago but to no avail.
This evening I tried creating a new task on the server to just backup the OneDrive, but it came back with the same error as the incremental task that was scheduled.
It ends with this message:

And the general failure occurs with this one:

I cannot cancel the backup though and it keeps repeating steps like these:
"The operation was interrupted due to a problem with network connection to the required file. Time trying to connect to the location: 30 seconds." Which goes from 30 seconds up to more than 15 minutes
I will check the local backup option and I'm also digging into this one from 2012 to which the above error codes refer:

I did have to reset the simple LAN network settings on Creators Fall updated machines so some networking stuff may have changed within the area of 'Security!security!security!' (Formerly known as: Developers!Developers!Developers!)

You should raise a New Topic for this issue in the Acronis Backup 11.7 Forum as that looks to be the product you are using here, not Acronis True Image. The folks in that forum will understand the logs from BR 11.7 better than I or other MVP's here do, as we do not use that product.

I was planning to post it to the 11.7 forum but I think it's a closed topic already. I have another account on the same PC with the same OneDrive version running but that doesn't give me the trouble I had with this folder. So I guess there's something corrupt in the folder. Something like that. Anyway it doesn't seem to be an Acronis thing so thanks for the quick support, sorry to have bothered you in the wrong place.

Even including one tiny file from my OneDrive folder causes Acronis Cloud Backup to fail.

Hello everyone,
OneDrive folder may deny access to the files and it will cause backup to fail. The solution, as Steve mentioned, is indeed to disable "Save space and download files as you use them" in OneDrive settings.
Kai Tchong, I am not a big Acronis Backup expert but the error message seems like a crash. Did you check whether there are Managed Machine Service crashes in Windows event viewer logs?

Thanks Renata. There is no such crash reported in Event Viewer.
Using the option of downloading files from OneDrive does not seem to be appropriate. Quoting from Microsoft " When you open an online-only file, it downloads to your device and becomes a locally available file." Further, if the file was created on this machine that's where it resides, with a copy sent to the OneDrive Cloud.
There must be more to this error.

Peter, if you have any 'online-only' files in your OneDrive, then I would assume that this is represented by some form of symbolic link in order to allow you to click / open the file and trigger the file contents to be downloaded to your local folder storage.
I would suspect that this may be the cause of your Acronis Cloud backup to 'barf' when it tries to handle these online-only files and touching them triggers the file(s) to change contents!
In my own case, I am happily backing up my OneDrive folder to the Cloud with no issues but I do not have any online-only files involved in this scenario.

Peter, thanks for confirming that. Getting back to the start of this topic, did you get a copy of the MVP Log Viewer tool and use this to check what messages are being written in the task log for this problem backup task?
Also, what type of files are being stored in your OneDrive folder here?

From the top op of my mind I'll add my 50cts from what I remember. The logs have been cleared for a while now.
When I came home I found it was correct. My Onedrive desktop application had changed to the new version and decided by itself which files should not be offline available. Checking the log messages it stated that Acronis was timing out waiting for the original file a symlink was pointing to. After turning off the new option everything worked fine again.
If I had read better, I would have solved it earlier. You will find the same behavior if you backup User Folders. They also come with (hidden) symlinks pointing to the ProgramData folder. You can choose to allow the source files to be backed up and since Acronis does not have to enter a Cloud Server but is able to check the local FS, it doesn't time out and finishes the Backup with warnings.

Thank you Kai Tchong and Steve Smith. Once I has made sure that all remnants of OneDrive's "Files on Demand" were removed Acronis Cloud backup of these folders worked perfectly. As this backup runs from my principal workstation I am very happy to have all files downloaded to this drive. I'm not interested in saving space in this case.

When can we expect a fix for this issue? It certainly isn't appropriate for Acronis to be unable to successfully include OneDrive folders in a backup unless we disable a key feature of OneDrive.

There will be no fix for this issue unless the users affected by it each raise a Support Case directly with Acronis and allow the developers to investigate the root cause of the issue. If all the discussion on this issue are purely here in the User Forums, then there is no incentive on Acronis to look to see if this is an issue with their code or not?

Here's what I'm getting when the backup is interrupted: OneDrive Failed to enumerate directory 'C:/Users/Chuck/OneDrive/'. It may be corrupted or does not exist. Please check the disk for errors.
How do I overcome the problem?

Just adding that I've encountered the same problem. I've turned off the "Save space and download files as you use them" option with no luck. The Acronis support told me the only solution is to stop backing up OneDrive. I get that it's Microsoft that has changed how they work, but if I can't backup my media, then Acronis is pretty much useless and not worth what I've paid.
I understand that they are working on a solution but have no idea where to find out about progress of that solution. Support told me to check the forums, but no one from Acronis seems to be posting here, so that's pretty much a waste of time. Wonder if I can get some of my money back...

Robert, please open a Support Case direct with Acronis for this issue and register your concern in that way - the more users that do so, the higher focus this will get. Thought I'd comment for this OneDrive issue here. We are currently investigating the ways to overcome the new Windows functionality of the "files on demand" and checking for the way to back up these files to turn on the backup of OneDrive.
You could really help us if you told me a bit more about the scenarios of your OneDrive usage:
- Do you have the "Files on demand" option currently? If yes, would it be possible for you to turn it off for the Acronis backup?
- What is your scenario on backing up OneDrive? (as OneDrive files are being backed up by Microsoft)

Renata, please see forum topic: OneDrive issed fixed in lastest build - Query re existing tasks where I have already documented my own use of ATI to backup OneDrive where I have never used Files on Demand (apart from testing for this problem), but where now all my OneDrive backups fail completely to find any data to backup since Update 4 was installed.
Update 4 has broken any backup of OneDrive data regardless of whether Files on Demand is being used or not.

Does this issue apply to all “varieties” of OneDrive? It clearly applies to the version of OneDrive included with Windows 10 (which is presumably the same as the one included in Office 365). However one one included in Office 365 for Business is different, and you ,can have .them both on the same system (this is what I have). I have only had the problem with the generic version - it is possible that the backup aborted before trying to backup the the “business” files.

I use Acronis to backup my entire system. The reason I want my OneDrive folder backed up is that I have control over restoring it in the event of a system failure. It is never a good idea to rely upon only one system as a method of backing up critical data. I realize that my OneDrive data is backed up by MS, but I do not want to rely solely upon them in the event I have a failure. I want to have my own offline backup of my data.
Also, I was having no issues with backups completing and my OneDrive folders were being backed up successfully. The most recent update to Acronis changed all that by excluding my OneDrive folders. If anything, give customers the option of including them or not. This was a pretty heavy handed approach to just turn off the ability to backup this data. Makes me think of using some other product if this isn't solved promptly.

same prob here, but only with Acronis Cloud Backup. Local back works fine. Seems like Acronis Cloud backup is having a problem with ANY One Drive folder. This problem only started happening in the last few days and is having a problem with the current, active One Drive folder, but is ALSO having a problem with a folder named One Drive, which is an old one Drive folder in the windows.old saved directory from an upgrade from win8-10 2 years ago. This folder has not been active for 2 years, but Acronis Cloud Backup is having a problem with it JUST because it's named One Drive.

Hello Richard. I found it useful to make this setup changes:
1) In the Options/ Advanced tab performance and Network area I selected Acronis Snapshot, not VSS.
2) I configured my OneDrive Settings to select (tick) "Save space and download files as you use them". I think this is no longer essential.
Have you updated your Acronis installation? You should do this.

If you have build 12510 of ATI, OneDrive folders are excluded from backups. It seems Microsoft has stuffed everyone up yet again.

Is Acronis working with Microsoft to enable backing up OneDrive files? How soon does Acronis anticipate having this addressed?
BTW, "This" is not being able to backup OneDrive files, even those stored on the local hard drive.

Bob, we hope that Acronis are still actively working on this issue with OneDrive files. They have put back the ability to backup local OneDrive files in the latest ATI 2019 version, but still fixed the issue for when OneDrive FilesOnDemand is enabled.

Steve, it was my understanding that the block on backing up local OneDrive files was still in effect in ATI 2019. Am I wrong about this? Acronis have not communicated well on this subject. I want to know for sure before shelling out for the new version.

Trevor, I have been making regular OneDrive (local folders) backups since ATI 2019 came out of the Beta testing with no issues. There is still an option here to opt for a 30-day trial of ATI 2019 if you want to test it before committing to a purchase. FoldersOnDemand still does not work for ATI backups.
