When trying to backup, the initial error message is: Failed to create the scheduled task, Error #1722 - "The RPC server is unavailable (0xFFF0)".
I tried the above. It doesn't work because the all options to start and stop the Acronis scheduler and the Startup Type are greyed out in services.msc. Additionally, running the above mentioned tool has no effect. When I try to run the install.bat file from an elevated command prompt, it initially says it is started, but then gives me the message:
[SC] StartService: OpenService FAILED 1060:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
*** Done ***
I haven't changed anything since the last backup about 2 months ago. What do I need to do to get past this error and backup my hard drive?

Hello Philip,
Let me help you.
Please try to update Acronis Scheduler manually the following way:
- Download the http://www.acronis.com/files/support/schedmgr.exe file ;
- Start the Command Prompt (with Administrator privileges) from Start -> Programs -> Accessories menu;
- Run the following commands in the folder you saved the file to:
schedmgr task zap
schedmgr service stop
schedmgr service uninstall
schedmgr service install
schedmgr service start
This should delete all Acronis scheduled tasks on the PC.
After that please check if the problem still occurs.
Please reply to this thread if the issue persists or if you have any additional questions.
Thank you.

Thank you for your response. It didn't work at all; it just kept giving me messages about not recognizing the command, even though I was meticulously careful to follow your instructions letter-for-letter. So I just uninstalled and reinstalled Acronis. Which brought back a recurring problem: Acronis is definitely not user-friendly for those who wish to do random (non-scheduled) backups. Nine times out of ten, when I try to start a backup, it fails, e.g., nothing happens. Even though I check the box that says 'Run task now'. When I see the task is not running, I right-click on the task and choose 'Start', but still nothing happens. Oh, one time it started, but it prompted me to insert a DVD in the E drive, although I had very clearly instructed the program to back up to the M or external hard drive. Scheduling backups for any point in the future does no good, either; they just don't run. I'm following the wizard (doing it the intuitive way).
In the past, I have occasionally been able to get a backup to run, but only after a lot of tinkering, and then I'm not sure what specifically made it work. What is the secret to getting Acronis to actually do a backup? And if you have any input with the programmers, can you ask them to make it more intuitive?
Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

Philip,
These services shouldn't be greyed out you should have access to them.
Is your PC part of an Administered group? If so, is it possible that a group policy has been enacted that you are not aware of?
Are you able to bring up the properties of the service? If you are, check to see what authority they are running under - if it is System or NTUSER then something has gone horribly wrong somewhere.

On a clear disk you can seek forever

First of all, thanks for hanging in there with me.
My current issue is not the original issue, but it's not a new problem.
Now that I've uninstalled and reinstalled Acronis TI, nothing is greyed out; it just doesn't *do* anything.
I'm running a home PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, and there are no other PCs. I am running the application as administrator.
The program starts seemingly normally and allows me to go through all the steps of the wizard, but when I get to the end, it just becomes another unscheduled task with a status of Idle. Right-clicking and choosing Start does nothing.
I *finally* got it to run by scheduling it for 10 minutes in the future, but it shouldn't be this difficult. Tasks should be able to be started manually in addition to being scheduled.
