I am having problems with TI2012 on a new Dell Vostro 3750 notebook running W7 x64 Professional. I did open a support case but the issue seems very intermitent and has reappeared.

The problem is that TI often fails to open. I suspect the problem occurs after specific tasks (non Acronis related) have been run first. Today was a typical example where I can give an actual timeline with as much info as I can remember.

1. PC booted from cold and new Windows updates were notified as being available and these were installed. (I have WU set to notify only).

2. WU requests a restart which is done.

3. PC used normally for email/web for 10 minutes.

4. I then decide myself to do another restart with a view that it will clear any remaining open files etc following the updates and the auto running of the WU malicious software removal tool. (I would then run a disk cleanup).

5. So following this second restart I now open Acronis (which opened correctly) and add to my incremental backup sequence. That went OK and when completed Acronis was then closed via the normal "red" close button at top right.

6. I then ran the disk clean using Windows tools and also used the "clean system files" option that is sometimes available if disk clean finds there are such files to clean.

7. I now want to make a full disk image using Acronis as I will be installing a new printer later today and this is when I find Acronis will not open.

8. I do a restart and following this Acronis STILL will not open. That was unusual as a single restart has always seemed to allow it to open again.

9. So I wait a couple of minutes and do a further restart and after this Acronis opens correctly.

This issue (from the many times it occurs) seems very dependent on what tasks I have done before as to whether Acronis will respond or not. When I say it doesn't open I always get as far as the User Account Control and click yes. I am then just returned to the desktop.

This is a new Dell PC and I have tried an earlier build of TI2012 direct off the retail CD and also the latest build. Both have the same issue. I have also tried this on both the Dell factory image of W7 (that is complete in every way) and also on a "clean" W7 image from a Microsoft W7 SP1 disc and Acronis fails (intermitently) in both cases. No 3rd party clean up tools are used (not even CCleaner). All housekeeping is with Windows tools.

As mentioned the problem is very intermitent. Acronis seems to open "the first time" I want to do anything. It is after this that things are hit and miss. Sometimes it will open again and sometimes not. I have also encountered this issue with just opening Acronis and setting a task or backup, then closing Acronis and deciding I want to open it again. In that situation it has also quite often failed to open.

The wordpad documents attached shows task manager BEFORE and AFTER Acronis fails to open. I notice that when in the "faulty" state there are several Acronis processes running.

I have just opened task manager now, looked what is running, opened Acronis, closed Acronis and looked again in task manager. Acronis at the moment is working correctly and I see that there are not the same number of processes running each time I look.

Could some Acronis processes be "hanging" and not closing when the problem occurs ?

I have repeatedly try opening from both the desktop icon and from the "all programs" picking Acronis from the list. Nothing but a reboot will correct the situation.

Without wishing to muddy the waters, after stumbling across this thread, post #13

I might have this issue too.

A 4GB TDK flash drive takes around 2 minutes to be recognised and often says requires format etc. Other drives I have are OK. All drives were used with TI10 and Vista previously. The drive still works fine with the old Vista PC.

Yes. It looks like Acronis is hung on exit for a while, and therefore wouldn't start if you try to relaunch the program.
It is very hard to diagnose this kind of problem.
To troubleshoot, I would create a clean boot environment (using msconfig) and restart the computer, to see if the behavior still exists. If it doesn't, this mean you have a conflict with 3rd party software. If it subsists, it is some issue with the Windows environment.

Thanks Pat L. Confirming it looks like a hung process has given me something to go on although it is disappointing to be having to troubleshoot issues like this.
