Hello everyone,

i  have several exchange 2010 backups from a time that is older than the retention plan of my current Acronis setup.  What i did was periodically copy and paste the .tibx files from the first backup source to an offisite backup source.  Now i am unable to browse or restore from the second source.  Is it possible to mount these backups via an alternative method than using the acronis web interface?

Any help is much appreciated.

thanks,
Christian

Hello Christian,

thank you for your posting!

I'm afraid, this is not possible, because we store backups in the proprietary data format .tib (or .tibx). You'll either need an Acronis bootable media to browse\restore data from Acronis backups or install the product onto machine you want to browse data from (see the Requirements part).

Try to follow instructions listed in https://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_12.5/index.html#37102.html

Hello Christian,

What i did was periodically copy and paste the .tibx files from the first backup source to an offisite backup source.  Now i am unable to browse or restore from the second source.

The backup archive on the second location could have become inconsistent if any slice (e.g. incremental/differential or full backup of the whole backup chain) is missed there.

Thus, we recommend that you use Export backup option to avoid such issues in future.

Hi Maria.

These are Exchange only backups.  There are no files to browse. When they are clicked on I simply see different backup files.

Hi Christian,

please compare the MD5 checksum of your backup archives in both locations.

You are also welcome to share the screenshots of your backup archives content from both locations.

However, the best option would be to Export backup from its original location if you still have an opportunity to perform this.

The first image is of the primary backup location, the second is of the location where i periodically copy and paste the data to.

Christian,

it is obvious that the archives' content is different in both locations.

The reason is Retention rules which are applied to the backups in the original location but not to the second one. As a result, a new backup which is being created in the original location depends on the number of previous backups and the data in there. Thus, when this new backup is transferred to a new location its identifiers and dependent content do not coincide with others backups in this location which leads to the whole archive inconsistency.

We recommend that you use Replication option which will allow the backups located in the second source do not depend on the backups remaining in the original location and vice versa.

can i repliacte the existing data in the second location to a different location?  Does this mean that the data in the second location is unrecoverable?

thanks,

Hello Christian.

Some of your backups from the second location could be recovered (those ones that directly depend on the previously created and were not affected by retention rules in the original location). However, this will require a thorough analysis and content comparison.

Thus, I recommend that you contact Acronis Support Team.
