Manual replicate vault

Thread needs solution

HI,
I am evaluating Acronis for Hyper-V and as such I am doing some bad scenarios. I have to backup vaults, one in the datacenter, one offsite. It works relatively well so far, the replication works as long as I configure that in the job. Now imagine my primary vault crashes (or even my secondary). How can I replicate the second store back to the primary? I just can't find it anywhere in the manuals nor on the forum. My current backup solution has the option to make backup-copies of either sessions or media to any store (or vault) I want.

How to do that in Acronis?

You can use the Acronis command-line utility (acrocmd) to achieve this. See http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.5/index.html#12322.html for example ('acrocmd export archive' without specifying --arc parameter)

I can't get it to work. What I try to do here is 'sync' the secondary store back the the newly created primary, to have my backup data at two locations again. I use the following command:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\CommandLineTool>acrocmd export archive --loc=bsp://[secondary host vault]/vault --target=bsp://[primary vault host]/vault

Total time: 00:00:00
An error occurred while executing the command.
Error: 0x1510008
$module = "acrocmd_vs_39029"
Tag: 0x7A8E520180FDC065
TOL: Failed to execute the command. The 'Export Vault' command exports all backup archives from the specified vault to another vault.
Error: 0x1350016

$module = "disk_bundle_vs_39029"

Failed to get archive URIs from location 'bsp://[off_site_host]/vault'.

$module = "disk_bundle_vs_39029"

Cannot get location settings.
Error: 0xA10003
$module = "disk_bundle_vs_39029"
Tag: 0x7C1C5CBE34248C5D

It talks about export vault command, but that doesn't seem to exist. In addition it complains about unable to get archive URIs. I checked with acrocmd sysinfo and the path I specify to the vaults are absolutely correct.
Apart from the fact that I actually prefer command line above GUI, I think manually replicating either backups, archive or a whole vault should also be possible from GUI. To me that is a fundemental function when using multiple vaults / backup stores.

A sidequestion is, what transfer method is used for exports? Can it use source-side deduplication?

Thanks in advance

I got it to work by supplying the ASN credentials after both --loc parameters. I think the documentation as well as the error messages are lacking a bit in this product. I never got a 'permission denied' or anything like that, just 'cannot find it'.

It does NOT seem to use source-side dedup though when exporting archives. For test I had 4 full-backups of the very same ISO file. In the remote store that was deduped to 1/4th of the total data of course. Howeer when exporting it used the amount of the 4x the ISO file. Hence I suspect dedup is not used on source level here. That's a shame really, my current product does do that, and it's a great feature for us.

It looks like you didn't specify credentials for the managed vault (that is, logon to the [secondary host vault] machine, regardless of where it is physically stored. Regarding source-side dedup - I will clarify it. During replication as a part of a backup task it is set the same for backup and replication task, as specified in backup options.

Hi!

Export operation should use source-side dedup, but it is not what you expect. I'll try to explain:
If you export _backup_ from secondary vault to primary one, data blocks from backup, that are already exist in primary _vault_ would not be transferred by network. In your scenario, primary vault is empty initially, so not data to compare with.

As I understand, you expect that 1st backup will be deduplicated with 2nd-4th ones. It will be deduplicated after export (background 'Indexing' operation will do that job), but at the moment of export 'Indexing' is not yet done. Source-side deduplication is possible only with 'Indexed' data.

I am still struggeling with how this works. I wrote a little script that replicates backups to the second vault in case something went wrong because of network issues or things like that. It seems to be unable to replicate multiple backups at the same time. When I start three replications, only one runs and the other give messages like this. If I wait for the first replica to finish and then rerun the exact same command, the second replication runs fine.

Any insights on this?

Regarding you last comment, have you tried to replicate backups from one Archive or from different ones?
