Recovery Linux machine results in raw files

Hi all,

I have to recover a virtual linux machine into an ESXi 5 environment from an Acronis image. The machine has 4 drives. In the result of the recovery I get 4 files with a raw extension, but no vmdk or other typically vmware configuration files. The storage where the machine is recovered to is a NFS storage. Why do  get only raw files? Is there anybody who can explain this?

Hi Andrea,

There are many possible ways to perform such recovery: using Acronis Agent for VMware (Virtual Appliance or Windows Agent connected to vCenter/ESXi host), or using Acronis bootable media (prepare VM, boot it from .iso, run recovery), or by running recovery from inside live Linux VM. Can you please clarify how exactly recovery was performed in your case? Some screen shots showing your actions and the obtained result would be really helpful, so that I can advise you further. Please also clarify how the original backup was created (was it agent-less, or via Agent for Linux installed inside the machine).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

many thanks for your reply and that you would like to help me.

The Backup of the virtual linux machine was performed by the Acronis Backup&Recovery Virtual Appliance 11.5. There is a backup task configured and started in the Acronis Backup&Recovery 11.5 Management Console.

The recovery was performed within VMware vSphereClient by running Acronis bootable media as connected iso. After Acronis was booted I selected the recovery option and configured a recovery task. Find some screenshots attached, please. If more information is needed let me know.

One of the screenshot shows the result files. The virtual machine has 4 drives, and the recovery results in 4 raw files.

Regards Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for the provided details, they were most helpful. The .raw format disks are created when you perform recovery/conversion into KVM virtual machine type and this is the selection which you seem to have made on recovery_configuration.png screen. The proper way in your scenario would be to perform recovery into _physical_machine_ type on that screen, because you're running recovery from the bootable media environment (booting a VM from the boot media), therefore this VM is considered as local physical machine during recovery and that's where you can map your disks from backup onto the disks on the VM which is booted from the bootable media.

The alternative way to perform recovery is to perform it by connecting from Acronis Management Console to Virtual Appliance directly (from AMS management for example) and run recovery into "New virtual machine" selecting VMware ESXi machine type - this will generate the VM directly on the selected ESXi host and storage (datastore).

If there are still difficulties following the process, I'd recommended contacting our support team for assistance.

Thank you.
