Problem with High CPU due to Acronis Managed Machine Service and WmiPrvSE.EXE

Thread needs solution

Running Windows 7 64-bit and installed Acronis Backup and Recovery (latest build as of May 1 too) and have been experiencing occasional CPU often at 100% for minutes at a time. Sometimes the system would eventually recover and other times not and be forced to reboot. The high CPU was the WmiPrvSE.EXE determined by using Process Explorer (free download). I then determined that this service has about 4 dependent services, once of which is the Acronis Managed Machine Service and disabling this service has resolved the high CPU problem.

Even when running normally, WmiPrvSE.EXE will spike to 100% CPU about every 1 minute just like clock-work. As soon as I disable the Acronis Managed Machine Service, the spiking goes away as well as the long periods of high CPU. So as you can imagine, I am having to keep this service disabled. But that pretty much makes B&R useless.

Is anyone else having this problem? I only found one other confirmed instance of the same problem here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproperf/thread/75d22f93-5dc6-4f22-a992-5351ec1fc251

To may surprise I did not see any other threads that even mention this service. Any ideas? If you are having high CPU issues and have B&R installed, please disable the service to see if that helps. Any advice would be appreciated. Cannot use B&R as it currently stands and have not yet sent this issue to support.

Thanks
Don

Hello Don!

Welcome to Acronis Forum, we're glad to greet you here! I completely understand your concern and will do my best to assist you.

I have carefully checked our internal resources and found a similar issue, which is currently under investigation at the Experts' team.  I have sent a request to speed up the investigation process and received a reply that the information from your machine will be a great help in finding a solution. Could you please kindly gather the following info?

  1. Acronis Info from the target machine
  2. Event Logs (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer )

After that please send me via PM this information.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you in advance for cooperation and understanding.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem on my laptop as soon as I install Backup and Recovery 10. Have you guys figured out the cause of this issue or should I submit a Acronis Info report and Event Log as well?

Thanks.

I had this and Acronis Technical team appear to have solved it.

The solution seems to be to clear all the Windows Logs in Event Viewer. My logs had thousands of entries!!

Dear David!

Thank you for finding time to post solution to the thread, it is really helpful!

I just wanted to specify the path to Event logs (just in case):

  1. Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Unfold Windows logs
  2. You will see a few items (aaplication, security, system, setup, forwarded events). Make Right-Click on Application and System -> Clear the log

Please don't hesitate to let us know in case this solution didn't help you - we will find another way to fix the problem.

Thank you!

Hello,

I have the same problem on Windows XP.
Every minute, WmiPrvSE.EXE take 100% of CPU during 8-10 seconds.

If I stop "Acronis Managed Machine Service", this problem is solved, but Acronis Backup unusable.

I checked my Event Log. It's almost empty (50 entrys maximum).
After clearing event log, the problem is always here.

Ditto with me,

I didn't know about the process you speak of (maybe I'll try that one too...) but, for me part of the problem was also the Acronis NonStop & Acronis Schedule2 Services: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/14724

I'm going to try looking into the process that you speak of too, to see if that is what's slowing my machine down.

Wow, it is 2019 and I am having this problem. This was reported in 2010. Has it been solved? I have the latest version as of today (12.5) and this problem we see it on Win2008R2. Can someone point me out to some solution?

Hello Fabian,

please open a new topic in Acronis Backup 12.5 forum and describe your issue. This thread is 8 years old, the product code has been changed numerous time since then, so the root cause for the issue in your case is hardly related to one discussed here.

Thank you,
