Acronis Backup for VMware 9.0.10007 and Windows Server 2016

Will this combination work, resp. can I backup the VMs flawlessly?

Hi Chris,

While officially Acronis Backup for VMware 9.0 does not support Windows Server 2016, the following items will still apply:

  • Backup and recovery of a VM which runs Windows Server 2016 as guest OS should work properly, with exception for specific configurations, like having NTFS deduplication enabled on some of the volumes or having Storage Spaces set up inside the machine.
  • P2V for Windows Server 2016 (backup via boot media and restore via appliance/Windows agent) likely won't work.
  • Run VM from backup of VM which contains Windows Server 2016 inside may or may not work (we've not tested it). In theory there are big chances that it would work though.
  • Granular files/folders recovery from backup of a VM with Windows Server 2016 inside, should work fine.

P.S. Remember that Acronis Backup 12.5 is the natural successor for Acronis Backup for VMware 9.0 product, with upgrade path available, so it's recommended to use this new version for protection of modern environments.

Thank you.

Thank you Vasily, that sounds promising.

Does this also count for AD granular?

And can you also tell me if granular of 9.0 works for Exchange 2016 too?

Is the upgrade to Acronis Backup 12.5 only available for customers with active maintenance contract or is it a free upgrade offer?

Hi Chris,

For Exchange 2016 (and 2013) granular recovery of Exchange items won't work for sure with Acronis Backup for VMware 9 (these Exchange versions are supported in 12.5 only). Also there is no granular AD recovery neither in Acronis Backup for VMware 9.0 nor in Acronis Backup 12.5. The AD granular recovery feature is planned for futuer updates/versions only (probably within 12.5 or even a new version).

Upgrade to 12.5 is free for customers with active maintenance only. If you have expired maintenance then there is an upgrade license which can be purchased at reduced price.

Thank you.
