Backup on local storage

Thread needs solution

Hello,

we are running vmProtect 7.0 as virtual appliance. Installation was no problem. We have an external SCSI-RAID-system with 8TB attachad locally to the VMware host. We want to do backups to this RAID. Under vcenter I have attached this external Raid as a datastorage and formattet it with VMFS5.
The problem is, that I only can built Virtual Disks up to 2TB. So I have added 3 virtual disks with 2TB each. I can do backups now and choose one of the three local storages.
My problem is, that I can only choose complete virtual machines to backup and we have one with about 5TB vmdks. How can I backup these to my backup storage ?

Thanks in advance.

Ralph

Hello Ralph,

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here.

Actually this limitation is related to the MBR. Virtual appliance can work with the MBR disks only, and MBR cannot hold more than 2Tb. Our Development team plan to include UEFI/GPT support to the future versions of the product, but we don't have any ETA available.

As a workaround we would advise you to create a LAN-free backup with the Agent for Windows.

You will need to install the Agent onto Windows, then attach your SAN LUN with the virtual machines, and the external RAID for storing the backup. It should work.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

Hello!

Meanwhile, we have the version 8 in action, but the limit is still at 2TB.

There is a solution in the foreseeable future in sight?

Hi Olaf,

The 2TB limitation is still applicable to 8th version of vmProtect for Virtual Appliance-based installations (in case of Windows Agent you can attach >2TB storage to that Windows machine and use it as backup repository), but we do plan to add GPT local attached storages support into virtual appliance in future versions. Though there is no exact ETA at the moment.

Thank you.

Add me to the list of customers who want, no... NEED this implemented ASAP. VMWare ESX now supports datastores (since version 5) of greater than 2tb. We have a 6TB LUN set up for backups and it is really irritating that if I want to use local storage in my VMProtect8 appliance that I have to create 3 2TB local disks. That's bordering on unacceptable. Please put a rush on this feature. The whole point of purchasing this product was to replace Veeam and the need to run the product in Windows Servers. We want to be able to have this backup process fully contained within vCenter and the appliance - no more windows servers and taking up valuable windows licenses to run backup.

Okay, now it's year 2015 and we are running Version 9, but still not possible to mount disks larger than 2TB.

Hello Acronis! Change your virtual appliance to GPT instead of MBR! What should we do with a 2TB limitation for backups? :-(

Hi Markus,

The 2TB+ locally attached storage support is already added in the next version of Acronis Backup for VMware which is pending to be released either in the end of this year or in the next one. This will be a huge release with multiple enhancements added (for example we will add scalability and centralized management of multiple appliances), so it will take time to get it all properly tested before the actual release.

Thank you.
