Hello,

I didn't find a clear statement of if this works or not.

But when I try to make a backup of a running VM it always fails and even more worse it kills the VM. The configuration is VMware vCenter + 2 ESX 4.1 U1 Host as Cluster and iSCSI stroage.
The error message in the web interface is:

Kann kein Laufwerk oder Volume zum Backup finden. Die Aktion wurde abgebrochen.
Task 'Backup 07.09.2011 16:25:01' fehlgeschlagen: 'Erstellen des Backups fehlgeschlagen.

Thanks for any help.

Why this was moved from vmProtect to here? The issue is vmProtect related!

Hello Michael,

Thank you very much for your post. I will do my best to assist you.

Unfortunately this one error log does not provide info about the cause of this problem. Would you be kind enough to get back to me with the following please:

1. Are you using the virtual appliance or Windows agent?

2. Full logs, you can collect them like this from the web-console: View->Show Logs->Save All to File

3. How exactly does the VM stop working?

4. Does it occur on all VMs or on specific one?

5. What types of virtual disks are you using,  IDE/SCSI for example.

Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.

Hello Anton,

first thanks for your reply. I try to answer your questions:

1. Are you using the virtual appliance or Windows agent?
I tried both - just to be sure that both version working - I'm evaluating it for the setup I have.

2. Full logs, you can collect them like this from the web-console: View->Show Logs->Save All to File
I've attached the log file from latest try to backup a Win XP VM.

3. How exactly does the VM stop working?
Well when I started the first run with vmProtect to backup my Oracle Database VM users reported instantly that the database is not reachable anymore. When I looked into the console..the VM was frozen and needed a restart - this happend also on a Win CC OA Server.

4. Does it occur on all VMs or on specific one?
It happened on all tested VM - Oracle DB with Win XP SP3, SCADA Server XP SP3, Windows 7 32bit VM.

5. What types of virtual disks are you using, IDE/SCSI for example.
The WinXP VM using usually IDE, the Windows Seven using SCSI - LSI SAS in Independent mode

The VMware Storage API is properly activated:

[root@ESX ~]# esxcfg-advcfg -g /DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedMove
Value of HardwareAcceleratedMove is 1
[root@ESX ~]# esxcfg-advcfg -g /DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedInit
Value of HardwareAcceleratedInit is 1
[root@ESX ~]# esxcfg-advcfg -g /VMFS3/HardwareAcceleratedLocking
Value of HardwareAcceleratedLocking is 1

Any news regarding this..

Meanwhile I got it working ... a proper Manual would state that vmProtect can't backup Virtual Machines which
have VMDK in independent mode configured.
