Hi BenAB,

It looks like you have a persistent disk configured in that VM, so it cannot create a snapshot as seen in 7815: Acronis Virtualization: Backup of Virtual Machine Fails with "Failed to open the virtual machine".

Please check/post your full error message, it might continue similar to this

--------------------
Error code: 233
Module: 83
LineInfo: a859dd78cc91df23
Fields:
Message: Cannot take a memory snapshot because the virtual machine is configured with independent disks.

Hi Ben,

check out 36200: Acronis Backup: VSS Troubleshooting Guide section 1.4 VSS writers should be enabled and in consistent state.

It may be simply a disabled VSS writer (Exchange 2003). Try running "vssadmin list writers" and see if "Microsoft Exchange Writer" is listed and in "Stable" state. If it is in Failed state you may restart the Information Store (this will make EMail access temporary unavailable).

If it is not listed then it may be disabled by system, you can enable by modifying this registry entry and restart the Information Store:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\Disable Exchange Writer = 0 (DWORD)

Another option can be 31347: Acronis Backup for VMware: Exchange-Aware Backup Fails with "VSS metadata is missing or corrupt", but there are different error messages.
