Hiya,

This might be stupid question, but no matter how much I try I just cant seem to find the answer.

Im running an ESXi host with a few VM's. On that I have installed the Acronis Cyber Backup 15 all-in-one-appliance box.

I have deployed an VMware Agent to the ESXi host also and I can take backups. The issue is when I want to recover, I can choose my device, select File/Folder and browse through the backups no problem, however I cannot select "restore to orignal location".

I can download the file/folder fine.

In the "Restore to" section, it only lists my Agent.

Its all Windows VM's.

Have I misunderstood the ESXi backup here or am I missing something?

Hello Jesper!

According to the documentation 7.5 Recovering files:

8. Click Recover. In Recover to, you see one of the following: l The machine that originally contained the files that you want to recover (if an agent is installed on this machine). l The machine where Agent for VMware, Agent for Hyper-V or Agent for Scale Computing HC3 is installed (if the files originate from an ESXi, Hyper-V or Scale Computing HC3 virtual machine). This is the target machine for the recovery. You can select another machine, if necessary

Are the files not restored to the VM you want if you select the agent?

Hello Jesper,

Welcome to Acronis forums!

I have deployed an VMware Agent to the ESXi host also and I can take backups. The issue is when I want to recover, I can choose my device, select File/Folder and browse through the backups no problem, however I cannot select "restore to orignal location".

This is because the agentless backup of any VM made with Virtual Appliance (Agent for VMware installed on ESXi) can't be restored to an original location. This process would require mounting the specified virtual disk.

However, there are not any problems restoring to an original location an agent-based file/folder backup of a VM. An agent-based backup is a backup made with the help of Agent for Windows/Linux installed on the guest OS of a VM.

Aallright, so just to understand it correctly when you write Agentless and agent-based.

I install appliance on host and then it pushes out Agents on each of the ESXi hosts, but NOT on the VM's itself. - this is way I am not allowed to restore to original location, correct?

If I want to restore to original location, I need to install agents on the VM's, correct?

Thanks for the fast reply! :)

Yes, both of your conclusions are correct.
