Tape Restore / Replication very slow

Thread needs solution

I have 2 HP ProLiant ML350 Gen 10 Server, both of them are backed up to a HP LTO 5 mounted in one of the servers. Backup works fine. The restore is very slow though, around 2 GB an hour. A replication of the tape content to an external USB disk is not faster.

So a desaster recovery of lets say 500 GB would last 10 days!!!

Any ideas?

Andrew

Hello Andreas,

Such issues should be investigated with our support team involved. There could be specifics in the way the data is accessed on the machine with tape connected, so diagnostic data will have to be reviewed first.

Some general recommendations to consider,

-  Try running Acronis Hardware Compatibility Tool for Tape Devices that checks whether a particular tape device is supported by Acronis Cyber Backup Advanced/Acronis Cyber Protect Advanced.

- File recovery from a disk backups on tapes might be more time consuming as per  https://forum.acronis.com/comment/487754#comment-487754

When I run this Hardware Compatibility Tool I get the following:

I tried both disk backup restore and file backup restore. No difference. The backup speed is ok. The restore speed around 2 GB/hour. So much too slow.

HP Library and Tape Tools says the LTO drive is ok, after testing.

Hello Andreas,

thank you for providing additional details.

So a desaster recovery of lets say 500 GB would last 10 days!!!

It could be normal depending on how you restore from a tape. If you do file recovery from a disk backup stored on tape, then restore is extremely slow - the software has to rewind the tape numerous times to find the required pieces. If you do disk-level restore from a disk backup - then this is not OK and you should open a case with Acronis Support Team for investigation.

The low restore speed is also natural when performing disk-level restore with resizing from a tape.

Please ignore this error message. It tries to detect a tape which is already in use.

How much time can a Restore take, of let's say a "Complete Machine" consisting of 2 disks with all together 200 GB?

About 20 Minutes

I have exactly the same problem after update tu 15.

Under 12.5 backup and restore to tape was fast

This is the answer of the Acronis support:

"....I have checked the logs and discussed the situation with our developers. Unfortunately, there is a known problem with the recovery from the ASN location at the moment. The number of the problem is ABR-312721.
At the moment our developers are working on it, but unfortunately we don't know an exact date when the fix version will be released...."

A backup that can't be restored? Really?

They proposed a workaround without ASN. Unfortunately it shows the same problem.

I have about the same problem with 15 U1 - replication from disk storage to LTO takes tooooooooooooo looooong. After update to 15 U2 replication even does not starts - just failing every time in 11 minutes. Frankly speaking i've tired in discussions with Russian Acronis support - totally no result and i even though to get rid of Acronis and try Veeam or Veritas.

Hello Andreas.

Unfortunately it does not do anything except displaying this error message.

You see this message when the tape is already in use (during backup or restore) and the utility tries to detect it.

How much time can a Restore take, of let's say a "Complete Machine" consisting of 2 disks with all together 200 GB?

There are many factors that influence the time. We recommend that you calculate this time by performing the following test: copy this backup from tape to a backup locaton that resides on the same Storage Node (NAS, HDD etc) and start the restore with the same parametres.

Unfortunately, there is a known problem with the recovery from the ASN location at the moment. The number of the problem is ABR-312721.

Thanks for sharing the details. The issue is in numerous tape rewinds during restore with validation.

Hello Evgeny.

Sorry to know about your negative experience with Acronis software and services.

After update to 15 U2 replication even does not starts - just failing every time in 11 minutes.

This issue does not sound to be the same as the one discussed in this thread. Could you please share with me (in a Private Message) the support case ID so that I could look into the situation?

I have the same problem.

@Maria Belinskaya: Is there any solution yet?

Just for testing I moved the LTO5 and controller to the sister server -> Same Problem

Then I mounted an old LTO2 and old controller in the first server -> Same Problem

No ASN used.

So I think most likely it's not a hardware problem.

Hello Andreas.

The ABR-312721 issue has been resolved. The fix will be available with the next Update 3 release.

Due to your information I reconfigured the system for use without ASN. So I think this Update won't help and 65 hours for 80% are simply unacceptable (see screenshot attached).

Need to restore a  100 GB  folder from  3,2 TB  sized disk with around 400 GB of used space

Tape is HP Ultrium LTO 7 with multiple full backups. Backups are done amazingly fast. In 30-40 minutes for the whole server (not just this disk)

What would be the fastest method  to restore from tape. I've tried file based restore and it was extremely slowly populating the folder that contains among other things some 10.000 images. I reckoned that would it take ages so I gave up..

Would volume based restore or disk restore be faster.? I've tried both and the task was stuck at  (jumped immediately) 15 percent with estimated duration of "more than hour " (for everything beyond 59 minutes) . Since it didn't budge from 15% for half an hour I thought there must something wrong. Is this method supposed to be faster than former (file based) method. When approximately should I see percentage moving up? How long should it take for the specific disk to restore to another disk? Days?

How long should it a rescan of the tape take?  Being doing one right now. It  started at 9 % and jumped  to 54 % after some 30 minutes and now after 2h 47 min is still stuck at 54%.

EDIT: Disk based restore is now at  "bytes processed"  6.71 GB after 3 hours. It would take something like 7 days to restore (if the total amount is size of the data and not the disk size itself) Will it be accelerating as it goes forward? This is waaay to slow for my taste. There should be a clear warning for anyone using the tape: WARNING: Your backup may require a very long time to restore.

Hello Toni,

File recovery from a disk backups on tapes might be more time consuming as per  https://forum.acronis.com/comment/487754#comment-487754

Please also check out the comments in the below threads dealing with a similar issue

To find the exact root cause for the issue, we'd still recommend raising a support ticket, where our engineers can look into the diagnostic information from your system and involve the RnD if needed.

I the first thread poster suggests

"What I would suggest doing if you have a staging area large enough, is load the tape you require and perform an EXPORT backup and save a copy of the TIB file from tape onto disk"

The post is from 2014 though.

When I try to do that I get the message.

How to resolve this?

Hello Toni.

"What I would suggest doing if you have a staging area large enough, is load the tape you require and perform an EXPORT backup and save a copy of the TIB file from tape onto disk"

The post is from 2014 though.

When I try to do that I get the message.

Replication from tape locations is prohibited

The replication from tape location is not supported since the tape could not be used as a source: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisCyberProtect_15/#backup-replication.html

The export from tape operation in the console is performed via replication, that is why you see this error message. You could overcome it by performing export with the command-line utility which does it differently.

Yes, this advice is from 2014 but the current build has problems with slow read operation (restore/replication and export) from tapes. Thus, we do not recommend performing this instruction with the current build!

Please wait with export when a new build with a fix is released. You will need to rescan your tapes after the update.

Hello.

The Update 3 with a fix for [ABR-322649] Read operations from tape media is slower than expected due to lack of caching for some operations is now released.

Could you give an estimate of the speed-up?. Have been in the restore process for more than 100 hours, 68%.done and don't want to stop it for the sake of testing.

Would this task have been long finished had I been using the new update? Is it a huge speed-up or a small correction?

Had restarted the restore job described above now using update 3. I don't have hopes of speedup as  activity status  attached  shows the same speed as before.

430 MB in 30 minutes. Crawlingly slow!

Is rescan of the tape required?

The new version now fixes the problem.

Please allow me 2 questions:

1.)    Why did I have to compile this incredible amount of data, which took a considerable amount of time, if the problem is known to ACRONIS anyway?

2.)    I have been an ACRONS user for many years and in the course of switching to a new server generation, I only tested the ACRONIS-Restore by chance. What would have happened if I had been confronted with a worst case scenario, i.e. if an emergency recovery had been necessary, which would then probably have run for a whole week with the faulty software?

Hello Andreas.

We are sorry that you've encountered issues with Acronis software.

1.)    Why did I have to compile this incredible amount of data, which took a considerable amount of time, if the problem is known to ACRONIS anyway?

A problem is known when several customers have reported about it. It should be investigated with the help of logs from these customers' environments. That is why we ask to collect these logs to understand what caused the issue.

In that case, the restore will be performed from the latest available backup.

Good morning,

same problem here related to restore a replicated Hyper-V VM from tape. Backup job is fine, Restore terrible slow and unuseable.

Current build 28122, HPE MSL2024 with LTO8. Encryption enabled. With build 28035 Restore was fine.

Any ideas or tips how to resolve this?

Many thanks,

Erik
