Western Digital not recognised
I have today upgraded Drive Monitor to Build 507. Unfortunately my disk
Western Digital WD5000AAKS-00A7B0 is not recognised. The message is
"S.M.A.R.T. monitoring is not available"
The disk is relatively new and other similar software packages are able to use the S.M.A.R.T. feature.
Same issue with me for WD20EARS in Vista 32bit on nVidia chipset
I had the same problem when I upgraded one of my two WD disks from a 250GB IDE drive to a 500GB SATA drive. That drive disappeared and I could only see the old IDE disk.
Yesterday I replaced the old IDE disk with a new WD SATA disk and that promptly disappeared as well.
As this rendered Drive Monitor useless, I have now gone over to CrystalDiskInfo which works fine.
Does Crystal Disk Info run correctly for a user without Admin privs?
I'm afraid I don't know. I do have Admin rights. However, it is free so it won't cost anything to try it. It may be helpful to others if you post the results.
Got another build from the developers to check on 13th of october, but it didn't work. Established a debug session with acronis developers on 19th of october 2010. Acronis guys now found out the problem. After implementing and testing the new method it will be available for download.
That sounds like good news. I preferred the Acronis program when it was working for me.
CrystalDiskInfo still required an account with Administrator rights to run. If you start it from a basic user account you get a UAC prompt in W7.
Like a lot of these programs I still do not understand why the writer(s) expect everyone to run as administrator. These programs, and that includes ADM need to run at start-up as a service with an interface that anyone can use to read or be alerted to problems but only allows the administrator to change settings.
Not rocket science I believe.
Thanks for letting everyone know. That will be helpful for the future. I note that the Acronis program has apparently been re-written and will shortly be posted for download. Hopefully that will run without needing administrator rights.

Established an additional debug session with acronis developers and tested a new build again.
SMART worked perfect!
After fixing some other issues a new build (> 552) will be published!
