ATI 2016 failed to exclusively access backup during consolidation

I keep getting this error, "Failed to exclusively access a backup file during consolidation. Make sure the file is not opened in other applications.".

I have Acronis True Image 2016 installed on 5 Windows 10 PCs on the same workgroup. I backup to one PC that has plenty of storage. All PCs have Bitdefender Total Security  2019, with Ransomware Remediation enabled. I have excluded all backup folders on the target PC from on-access scanning and on-demand scanning. Target PC is 64 Bit Windows 10 Pro Version 1809. The source PCs are either 32Bit or 64Bit Windows 10 Pro Version 1803.

When I run the backup I get the message right at the end of validation. When I run a validation on the backup file on the Target PC, it passes, so there is actually nothing wrong with the backup. The error only occurs on the source machine as it is doing the file consolidation at the end of validation.

I have tried deleting the backup settings and creating a new backup, but I still get the same error. I tried renaming the target partitions with drive letters at the end of the alphabet, but this made no difference.

here is an email log of a recent backup:

Is there a patch for ATI 2016 that can fix this?

Alex, if you have ATI 2016 build 6595 as shown on the Account page in the ATI GUI then you have the final version of the application that was provided by Acronis and there are no further updates or patches available.

You log data shows more than one issue at play here:

6  4:39:59 p.m.    The initial full backup version is not accessible at the moment.
7  4:39:59 p.m.    Network disconnected.
8  4:39:59 p.m.    The network name cannot be found

11  4:40:31 p.m.    Writing full version to file: Sys to BackPC_full_b21_s1_v1-2.tib
12  4:40:32 p.m.    Pending operation 172 started: 'Creating partition image'.
13  4:51:29 p.m.    Pending operation 172 started: 'Creating partition image'.
14  4:51:30 p.m.    The following backups have been successfully created: "\\Tihani5\alexbkups\ACRONIS\SYSTEM\Sys to BackPC_full_b21_s1_v1-2.tib"
15  4:51:30 p.m.    Validate Backup Archive Location:
"\\Tihani5\alexbkups\ACRONIS\SYSTEM\Sys to BackPC_full_b21_s1_v1-2.tib"
16  4:51:30 p.m.    Pending operation 4 started: 'Validate Backup Archive'.
17  4:57:06 p.m.    Consolidate Backup Archive Location:
"\\Tihani5\alexbkups\ACRONIS\SYSTEM\Sys to BackPC_full_b21_s1_v1-2.tib"
Destination:    "\\Tihani5\alexbkups\ACRONIS\SYSTEM\Sys to BackPC_full_b21_s1_v1-2_FCBBC694-A1DE-4AFD-A735-00AF2C7C9FB1.tib"

19  4:57:13 p.m.    Failed to exclusively access a backup file during consolidation.
Make sure the file is not opened in other applications.
20  4:57:13 p.m.    Failed to open data stream. Try to remove the backup from the list, add it again by clicking 'Browse for backup' and recreate the backup settings.
21  4:57:13 p.m.
22  4:57:13 p.m.    The operation is not supported.

The initial errors look to lead to the situation shown by having v1-2.tib in the file name.  See the ATI 2016 User Guide where it explains this file naming convention:

If you are creating a new backup, and there is already a file with the same name, the program does not delete the old file, but adds to the new file the "-number" suffix, for example, my_documents_inc_b2_s2_v1-2.tib.

The next messages show that the backup is successful, as is the validation process that follows it, but that the error you are reporting is happening during the consolidation phase, i.e. when automatic cleanup is being attempted.

Failed to exclusively access a backup file during consolidation. would suggest that the cleanup has hit access or permission issues on the remote system being used for backup storage. You should look at the Windows event logs on that system for any indication of what is stopping that access?

I have a question for you Steve. Say we have two W10 PCs on the same network/workgroup. We want PC1 to backup to PC2. Does Acronis True Image 2016 on PC1 have the ability to wake  W10 on PC2 if it is in sleep mode?

The simple answer here would probably be no, as ATI would probably timeout the backup task while the second computer was waking up, so you would need to use a Pre Command to send a WOL (Wake on Lan) packet to the second computer, then delay further action to allow that computer to wake ready for the backup to proceed.  This obviously depends on whether the second computer responds to the wake up method being used, i.e. you could just ping it if that would wake it, or else send a WOL packet.

See webpage: PowerShell for Wake on LAN - and webpage: What Is Wake-on-LAN, and How Do I Enable It?
