VPN Issues

Thread needs solution

I recently started using a VPN (because we're well on our way to making where I live great again?), and noticed I couldn't download the recent update, either through the app itself, or downloading it manually from the site.  If I disable the VPN, I can download the update.

Why can I not download updates using a VPN?

Welcome to these user forums.

I do not have any access to test this out via a VPN but it doesn't sound like an Acronis application issue if you cannot download the update install file via a web browser when going via the VPN.

I would recommend opening a Support Case directly with Acronis Support to get them to check whether they have any blacklists in place to prevent downloads coming from the IP address being used with the VPN?  See Contact link in my signature.

Thanks, I'll do that.  I guess in hindsight, this wasn't the best forum for the question, just happens to be the version I'm using.  Don't have any issue with any other sites with my new VPN thus far.

For what it's worth, I think I solved the issue (at least with respect to trying to download the update from the web site, though I'm sure it's the same reason the in-app download wasn't working).  I went into my default browser's (Chrome) settings and removed all the cookies and local storage for *.acronis.com and tried to download an update through the browser with the VPN on and it worked.

Thanks for the update / feedback - might be useful to someone else trying out VPN connections.

Speaking of VPN's, I just installed the Norton WiFI Privacy VPN.  Since then, I cannot access the server to my backups.  I'd like to recover some non-critical files after a system reset, which I haven't needed until now.

My Internet access is ALL WiFi.  My plan is to uninstall the VPN.  Any ideas?  Oh yes, I am running an upgraded version of Acronis True Image 2018.

Bill, did you see the update from the OP of this topic of how he resolved his issue with VPN, might be worth trying the same.

Hi Steve, yes, thanks.  I tried everything above, but I would get a server error with the VPN (Norton WiFi Privacy).

I knew I could get to the server, since I had, just before installing the VPN, downloaded 4 key files.  So, I came to the conclusion, it was the VPN which was holding me back and I uninstalled it, did a thorough disk cleanup (as I did when the VPN was installed) and tried to get that file again.

This time it worked!  So, without the VPN, everything worked as it should.  The file took a long time to download (I have a Broadband/Wireless Internet connection), but this morning, it was done!

Thank you, very much, for your input.  I have reinstalled the VPN and will see how Acronis behaves ongoing.  Since I don't need to restore anything, we can see how it does on the backup tomorrow morning.  'Probably will be done on Thursday . . . next week.  Yes (in case you were thinking to ask), Ethernet or cable is preferable, but I don't have a lot of money to afford it.  Social Security is rather brutal.

Bill, glad to read your feedback that you have got your files down OK after removing the VPN temporarily.

In terms of wired versus wireless, there should be very little cost involved normally, as most broadband routers (in my experience) come with one to four ethernet ports, and most computers have an ethernet port (unless using such as a tablet, phone etc), so all that should be needed is a RJ45 ethernet cable of suitable length.

I too mainly connect via wireless, including doing Cloud backups when time is not an issue, but when I need something done a little quicker, then I take my laptop to where I can connect it to my home network via a wired connection.  A 10 metre Cat 6 ethernet cable only cost me £8.99 (UK pounds) from Amazon and £11.99 for a 20 metre cable (current prices) when I last bought some cables.

Hi Steve!

Thank you, and I pray your Sunday is going well.

Ah yes, ethernet . . . I do already have the cables, but the problem is, well, my apartment and perhaps provider?  Anyway, the outlet is in the kitchen (of all places!) and my computer is in the living room (yeah, it's kind of a tiny place, but still 6 meters away; across the hallway).  Anyway, the outcome was/is, until I get cable, I am "stuck" with wireless.  My old service (AT&T), let me down, when I moved here to Nevada, since they do not offer any service here, except for Direct TV (yeah, I'm going to put a dish on my landlord's building?  'Don't think so!).  So, for now, I am "stuck" with the router in the kitchen.  I do not have a laptop.  I lost it when my house was foreclosed.

Anyway, yes, Ethernet or Cable is my goal.  Still, I have to work with what I am "dealt" for now.  Thanks again for your help and we'll see how the backup goes today.

Bill, hope your Sunday has been going well too and that your backup went well today.

Our Sunday has been good - we had an uplifting service this morning and relaxing afternoon, apart from having to diagnose and repair my Son's desktop PC (a dead wireless adapter card stopped it from booting even into BIOS!).

Hi Steve!  The backup will run for a while, so I have it set to start in the evening and let it run.  Since I added about 75G to the desktop, it will probably run through Monday.

Anyway, good sleuthing on that problem with your son's desktop.  Yes, I've seen that before and that is just what I did; started pulling out cards unnecessary to basic operation, i.e. the network card.  Once the card is gone, the OS won't sit waiting for the card to respond.

Come to think of it, I may get a better wireless adapter.  I have a new router picked out on Amazon, but both will have to wait for now.  My cards are all Small Form Factor, so they're a bit different that a full blown card which won't fit into the case.

I am glad everything worked for you and I will do some testing after the backup and let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Iwe sent inbound and outbound rules configure the vpn server, set rules on the routers but when I change the location and change the external ip adress in the vpn client it does not work. Also iwe set the client corectly, I have no ideea what else could it be. Any help?
