Disk Cloning Failed. See logs for details

Hello,

I'm trying to clone a 1TB HDD from my HP desktop to a 500GB Crucial SSD. The occupied volume in the HDD is less than 460GB and could already verify with the Acronis True Image software that the SSD can contain it.

That said, after a couple of hours copying the disk, I get the message "Disk cloning failed. See logs for details" and the operation ends.

I downloaded the logs but can't understand why it fails.

Can you please help me?

Thank you.

Just looking at the log above, sorry but your size of data from the 1TB HDD is too big to fit onto the new 500GB SSD and leave sufficient free space for the SSD to work correctly.  It is recommended that you should have up to 20% free space on any SSD to benefit from the performance the SSD can give.  Most SSD's are smaller than the advertised size, i.e. 500GB is more likely to be around 470GB and you should have nearly 100GB free space for performance but your partition sizes already add up to 465GB with minimal free space.

Thank you Steve for the explanation.

I'll try to free up sufficient space to retry the operation. Effectively the SSD has 465GB space. Therefore leaving free around 93+ GB (let's roundup to 100GB) should work fine with the cloning.

I'll try again and let you know if it worked.

Hello again.

I finally managed to clone the disk, but on a 2TB SSD instead. I subsequently configured the BIOS to use the external SSD as starting disk to replace the HDD, but for reasons I can't understand doesn't work. After a couple of minutes loading, the system opens a window to restore the computer.

Any clue on why this happens?

Thank you.

Best regards.

Luca, booting Windows from any external USB drive is prevented by Microsoft to stop piracy unless you have a special 'Windows 2 Go' installation of Windows on the external drive!

You would need to create the Acronis rescue media and boot the PC from that media.

So I should create the Acronis rescue media and also need the special "Windows 2 Go" license or simply the rescue media?

Once created, how can I tell the computer to boot from that media?

Thank you.

Best regards.

Luca, the Windows 2 Go license is only needed to boot into Windows from external media.  It is not needed when booting from Acronis rescue media.

KB 60820: Acronis True Image 2018: how to create bootable media

KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

If you want to test whether your cloned drive / SSD will boot correctly into Windows, then it needs to be installed inside the computer where it was cloned from in place of the original drive used for cloning.
