Leonidas, sorry but not sure exactly what problem you are raising here?

What does Explorer show if you click on 'Open location' for this backup task?

The problem is that about 350gb are by any means of able to get compressed to as low as just below ~20gb...?

If this is possible, then Not a problem... I think all others are OK

Just is too much compression ratio

Leonidas, the only reason why 350GB of disk data might possibly be able to compress down to as low as 20GB by Acronis would be if the majority of that original source size was comprised of Windows Protection (Restore point data) along with the default excluded system files (Hiberfil.sys, Pagefile.sys, swapfile.sys etc).

Have you tried Mounting the compressed archive file and comparing the contents with the original disk drive?

I haven't compared the files, but as the screenshot in the initial post/thread above, BACKUP & VALIDATED OK...!

I did a restore point prior to backup,... but do not know the history of usage as this belongs to my brother

and is Windows 8.1 OS laptop,

I think I will proceed to Update Windows 8.1 because indicates needs an update TO GET applied...

IS STRICTLY NEEDED IN YOUR OPINION COMPARE FILES HDD vs Backup.Tib ???

Note: Backup was done on C:/ System disk all Partitions of Disk 0, Windows 8.1

please reply --- kinds of files - the majority of files==videos found, so, the compressed max backup size is normal???

If you truly have around 270GB of Videos plus another 6.3GB of Photos then sorry but there is zero chance of that data being compressed down to around 20GB size.

Videos and Photos are already in a highly compressed state and Acronis will struggle to improve on that compression!

Are you sure that you are looking at the correct Acronis backup file for this backup task, because given the data composition, I would expect a file size of over 300GB here?

Actually, the first backup is, and first installed, and is trial software for this laptop, so no chance of error [only one backup]

I will reconnect the external disk a check the backup size, soon within an hour

also compare files

I will post screenshots soon too!

COMPLETELY EMPTY DISK C:/ FOLDER
INSIDE THE BACKUP.TIB

WHY THIS... WHERE DID THE ERROR???

SEE ATTACHMENTS --- NOT BACKUP ABOUT 330GB OF C:/ DATA

WELL????

Leonidas, how was this backup created?  Was it created within Windows using ATI 2018 or was it created after booting the original laptop from Acronis rescue media?

The log file for the backup operation should show some information if any errors were encountered during the process.

Logs for backups created in Windows will be on the PC where the backup was run but logs for backups created using bootable rescue media are volatile and are lost when the PC is rebooted into Windows.

In this case, it was created within Windows 8.1 using ATI 2018 - trial, and also you can see the screenshots seem the windows 8.1 taskbar and Acronis Software for windows...

where find log files in windows 8.1,...? Is it safe to post them in here, in the forums???

Leonidas, if the backup was created within Windows, then you can use the MVP Assistant tools to review the logs.

It is safe to upload the logs to the forum (using the File Upload option) but please zip the logs so that their original file names are preserved to identify what they are etc!

Download a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool and use this to look at the logs to see if they show any issues during the operation process?

The latest version of the new log viewer tool is at the link below.
MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.1.1)

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) or using Cloning then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The Schedule2 log contains information related to scheduled task but is one of the more difficult logs to read / work through.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

There is a disk error / file system error / perhaps bad sectors? on your source drive (Windows Disk 0 - Acronis Disk 1).

Try running CHKDSK /F for that disk drive.

Also, download a copy of the Acronis VSS Doctor tool and use this to check the VSS snapshot error being reported.

Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:

 - Western Digital drives: Western Digital Dashboard

 - Seagate disks: SeaTools for Windows

 - HGST disks: HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT)

 - Intel SSDs: Intel Memory and Storage Tool (GUI)

 - Samsung drives: Samsung Magician

 - ADATA drives: ADATA SSD ToolBox

 - Kingston SSDs: Kingston SSD Toolbox, Kingston SSD Manager

 - Transcend SSDs: Transcend SSD Scope

 - Silicon Power disks: SP ToolBox

 - Toshiba disks: Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool Utility

 - Crucial disks: Crucial Storage Executive

 - SanDisk disks: SanDisk SSD Dashboard tool / SanDisk SSD Dashboard user guide

Thanks for your reply and support

I will check soon the hdd with chkdsk

How find the brand of my laptop hdd? Also chkdsk has quick done commands and command params take much time to get  completed?

You say:

to check the VSS snapshot

You mean backup.tib file, correct?

If you can physically see the laptop HDD then you can see the make / brand, otherwise you can use Windows tools such as msinfo32 to find the information provided this is done on the laptop where the HDD is installed.

For msinfo32, expand Components >> Storage >> Disks and this will show the information.

The VSS snapshot is not the backup.tib file, this is the method that Acronis uses to capture locked OS files and data, using available free space on the source disk drive.

In my signature is a link where you can download the free VSS Doctor tool.  The tool does not need to be installed as is a stand-alone program which will produce a report on the status of VSS on your PC.

To avoid any data lost, are you recommend first

Manual Backup first most important files after run chkdsk/f...?

Or run

chkdsk /F first...?

Also, run chkdsk /f or chkdsk /f/r...? And which take most time to complete?

If you have any important user files, data etc, then by all means backup those files / data as a precaution against any loss.

I would start with CHKDSK /F as that is the quicker option then test to see if you are still seeing an issue, if so, then do the CHKDSK /R but be prepared to let it run for an extended period as it will be checking all sectors.

The Laptop HDD must be

 - HGST disks: HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT)

See Screenshots, correct?

My plan is to backup - doing now - manually to USB Stick and after to apply in CMD Line as admin the:

F:> chkdsk /f

after proceed to try to back up again with Acronis TI 2018

Is anything else needed?

I did a manual backup of 97% of all Files/Folders

I am ready to run

F:> chkdsk /f

but my Windows 8.1 system shows on Switch Off:

Sleep

Shut Down and Update

Restart and Update

So, I must run F:> chkdsk /f

and

after updating my laptop??? or vice versa???

CHKDSK of the active C: OS drive always requires a Windows restart to be performed.

If there is a Windows Update also pending, then perhaps this may need to be done first but worth setting CHKDSK to run on restart too and let Windows decide which order to do this.

So you mean execute as admin the

chkdsk /f

And restart,...?

This...?

Also, if press simple restart, without press restart & update, Windows 8.1 should update, too?

I feel option first finish with updates and after, run chkdsk /f is best...

Well...?

When you press enter to action the CHKDSK command, it will require you to do a Windows restart as the command cannot run when there are locked files by the OS.  CHKDSK should run before Windows then does any pending updates during the restart process.

So you mean execute as admin the

chkdsk /f

And restart, ... true/false?

IS ANY PROBLEM, INSTALL UPDATES AND AFTER RUN CHKDSK /F...?

Sorry Leonidas, I don't know how else to tell you.  Start the CHKDSK action and it will not continue unless you restart the computer.  If there are updates pending then these will be dealt with by Windows during the restart process.

It doesn't have to be complicated and Windows will handle both actions.

I understood you but, I refer if is better NOT to left Windows 8.1, handle both, but separate MYSELF THE ACTIONS, BY updating Windows 8.1 first, and after Restart, apply CHKDSK /F...

In other words, if actions are equivalent, isn't better separate actions myself...?

It really should not make any difference but you need to do what you feel is best for your system and data. Personally, resolving any disk / file system issues would be my priority otherwise any updates could be corrupted by those issues.

OK,

When needed a Laptop update

In such case as mine

can do Only Fix disk:

chkdsk /f

after

Do the update?

In other words, as chkdsk needs to restart - can restart without do the update applied???

If the update is already scheduled to run on restart then Windows will perform both actions during that restart.

Look at the options provided for doing Shutdown & Restart and see if you are offered Restart alone or have a separate option for Update and Restart?

Anyway, the Update is done,...

chkdsk /f

backup retry...

BTW

IF I DO BACKUP FROM DVD/ACRONIS - boot from DVD with Acronis TI 2018 - In such instance having errors the C:/ disk 0 - without fix then [ chkdsk /f ] what will happen...????

If the backup hits any file system errors then it can either pause waiting on the user to say what action is needed, i.e. to Ignore bad sectors, or else can fail due to the errors.

To my knowledge, there will be no difference.  An error encountered is exactly that.

VSS isn't used for some types of bootable rescue media, i.e. Linux based, but there are some snapshot type functions involved in all backup methods and therefore the chance of finding any file system issues or errors that are latent on the source disk drive or partitions.

If choose in backup settings bypass errors, i mean ignore errors, or any other setting exist for this, for my case,

In other words, if errors detected during, continue the backup, and not stop... well?

If you bypass or ignore errors, the integrity of your backup will potentially be compromised because there is no control over the contents of what is being bypassed / ignored / excluded from the backup.  The backup may continue without stopping on any errors but important files may be missing etc.
