Unable to recover my .tib files, need help.

I have two .TIB backup files that are about 7GB total.  I am trying to recover those files to an external 120GB Kingston SSD.  I will post below the procedure I am following, it used to work fine but for some reason I am getting errors on every recovery I try to attempt.

(first I plug in the SSD and format as seen in step 1 below)

  1. Click next, next, next (3 times), “Format Partition” select -format this volume- NTFS, Default, New Volume, Perform Quick Format, click -next-, -finished-

*The new assigned drive will be shown in my computer/this PC*

(this is the part I am having trouble with below, these steps)

  1. Collect the ghost archive necessary and download it to your laptop
  2. Right click only one of the ghost files and select -validate- (will validate all)
  3. When finished, click on -Recovery- in top right (normally defaults to -Backup-)
  4. Click on -Recover Disks- at the bottom
  5. Check the box in the middle under “backup” next to the validated drives (C:D:E:F:)
  6. Select the New Volume (HD)/Apricorn in the “Recover To” drop down list **Do Not Accidentally Select Your Laptop, Check the HD Size Shown If Not Sure**
  7.   Click the green -Recover Now- tab on the bottom, wait until completion.

Finished

Now, that is what is supposed to happen, but when I right click the .TIB file and hit validate, I get a popup when ATI opens that says "Failed to add the backup to the backup list.  The backup may be locked or corrupted.  Also make sure the folder contains the last volume of the backup, and does not contain a renamed copy of the same backup".

I click ignore because that's my only option, then when I go to the Recovery tab like the above steps show, it says "no data to recover yet".

I am not sure what to do and it is extremely frustrating.  All I'm trying to do is take those two .TIB files I have in that folder and recover them to a 120 GB SSD.

Thank you for any help...

Nick, welcome to these public User Forums.

Questions only at this point.

What version & build of Acronis True Image (ATI) are you using for this process?
What version of ATI was used to create the .TIB files you are trying to recover from?
What version of Windows OS is involved here?

What are the full names of the .TIB files?

I am using Acronis True Image Version 2019, Build 17750 (product says it's up to date)

What version of ATI was used to create the .TIB files you are trying to recover from?

I am not sure, that is a good question.  The .TIB files were made on 4/5/2018 so I am assuming it's ATI 2018 but I am not entirely sure on that one.

What version of Windows OS is involved here?

Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, version 10.0.17134 build 17134

What are the full names of the .TIB files?

"0751501091002_2018_04_05_15_40_04_977D1.TIB" and

"0751501091002_2018_04_05_15_40_04_977D2.TIB"

Nick, thanks for the answers - the obvious initial point here is that the .tib files have been renamed and doing so has removed the name information that Acronis gives to show what type of backup files have been created.

Renaming the files can be an issue because from the new names it is impossible to confirm that you have a complete version chain, i.e. an initial _full_ file and then either an _inc_ or _diff_ file that was created based on the changes identified since the full file was created.

ATI 2018 & 2019 both use a standard naming convention (as did 2017, 2016 & 2015 versions) where the name starts with the value given to the backup task, i.e. MyBackup but then is appended by the type of backup file (full, inc or diff) then the backup sequence identifier information, so for example:

MyBackup_full_b1_s1_v1.tib then MyBackup_inc_b1_s2_v1.tib or MyBackup_diff_b1_s2_v1.tib

This is why you are being given the error message:

"Failed to add the backup to the backup list.  The backup may be locked or corrupted.  Also make sure the folder contains the last volume of the backup, and does not contain a renamed copy of the same backup".

The best suggestion I can offer at this point is to try double-clicking on the largest of these .tib files in Windows Explorer, and look at the contents shown, in particular the name of the original backup file shown.  Then do the same for the second file to see if you see the same names shown?  See screen image below from some of my own .tib files opened in Explorer to show the embedded backup names.

In the above images, you can see that there is embedded information within the .tib files for the name of the backup when it was created,

The thing is is that we have had this format for a while at my work and it has always worked fine by those steps above.  It seemed to all go to crap when I updated my Acronis from 2017 or 2018 to 2019.  I'm not sure if it's always been like this but if there's any point that I remember when it stopped working, it was right when I updated Acronis to the latest version.

Nick, if you have access to the bootable rescue media from one of your older versions of ATI, then you could try the recovery using that.

I am having this same problem with .tibx files created by Cyber Protect Home Office. I tried posting a separate topic about this, but for some reason my topic is never appearing on the forum or getting any reads, even though it appears in my account information. I"ve also tried emailing Acronis support but haven't received a reply.

I have months worth of backups from several machines, and I have only just discovered I can't open ANY of them, because I get this same error message. I can guarantee I have not changed the names of any of the files, and in fact they are still in the exact same locations as they were created in by Acronis.

For the backups that still have active tasks, I can view and open them with the "Recover" tab.  But every backup that no longer has an active task gives me the above error message when I try to "Add existing backup" or when I try to validate any of my .tibx files.  And trying to open them in Windows explorer just results in an empty window.

I've been using Acronis products for my backups for 10 years. But I'm about to just give up and switch to a different backup solution. For 9 years Acronis has worked great for me.  But now, all of a sudden, all of my backups are apparently useless, and I can't get any attention from support.
