Cloning hangs at "Unable to write disk 1..."
In cloning a 250GB IDE drive to a 250GB SATA drive (which I've done at least 50x between 3 computers), True Image keeps stopping at 15% complete. It eventually pops up an error about an hour later that it's "Unable to write disk 1 sector 33741423" and gives options of Retry, Ignore, ignore All. Selecting any of the options does nothing other than make the hard drive light go back on as if it's trying to continue. On the second cloning attempt I completely formatted the drive first so it was clean, and True Image still hung at 15% with the same message.
I suspected a virus on the SATA drive when it started to just bluescreen after I installed something suspicious, and rather than deal with it, just switched to my back up drive and installed the few updates on it I was missing. I then thought the hard drive was going bad, but I've run WindowsXP error-checking on it, I've reformatted it, and also ran Western Digital's Data Lifeguard's extended test. Everything keeps checking out ok with zero errors and I can read/write to the disk without any problems. Drive makes no noises other than usual read/write spinning and there's no delay accessing anything.
My system is WinXP Pro with all updates and True Image version 8. Both of the drives are probably 6 years old and I wouldn't mind replacing them, but I really don't think it is a bad drive issue after finishing up the tests.
Any other suggestions on why the cloning might be hanging at that point or a way to get around it?
Thanks for any help.
Thank you for using Acronis True Image
First of all please make sure that you are using the latest build of the program. Check it in Help -> About. You can always download the latest build of the program from your account under Registered Products.
I would also recommend you create Acronis bootable disc and use it for cloning purposes.
If the issue persists download free trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and check it functionality.
I have the same problem with unable to copy sector while cloning. I know the drive has problems. That is why I am trying to rescue it and plug in my cloned drive instead. I have tried disk check and defrag and they finish without errors but the HP Utility for checking drives says it fails read write tests. It works most of the time for programs. It is the secondary drive where I have put programs because C: is filling up. Any cures?
Hello Niki and James,
We are really sorry for the delay with the response.
Let me help you with your issues.
First of all I may suggest you to check the disks for the errors using CHKDSK utility:
- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that
checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.
After that please try to clone the drives again. If the operation still fails, then most likely that some of your drives has unrecoverable errors.
In that case I may recommend you to create a sector-by-sector backup (see Chapter 9.3.1 of the User's Guide) and then restore it to a new hard drive resizing the partition. In that case your bad sectors that were backed up will be fixed.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
