How do I know when the cloning process is finished?

I am cloning a secondary drive (a 640gb 3.5 inch drive to a 750gb 2.5 inch drive)with Acronis in win 8.1 and there is no progress bar or anything after I hit proceed. I currently cannot access either the source drive or the destination drive so I am assuming its doing what it's supposed to do but how do I know? Did I do something wrong?

Many thanks for your very prompt and helpful reply, Steve. I'll naturally take your advice. I'm very much a novice so I'll goe through the recommended procedure slowly. I've only got one drive so I'll back up my system to the new SSD using a USB port - than swap three drives over (hopefully!)

I have the same question. I finally just came back 5 hours later and hoped it had worked. It had worked. Phew!
