Is this OK? should I just go ahead?

Craig, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to understand what the error message means?

What version of Acronis True Image are you using here?

Is ATI installed and if so, what version of Windows are you using?

What system does the source disk drive come from?  Is it from the same system where you have ATI installed or from a different system?

What partitions does the source disk drive have, and what file systems are used for those partitions?

Note: most versions of ATI fully support Windows file systems using FAT, FAT32, NTFS and may support some file systems used by Linux such as EXT2 & EXT3. 

Later versions of ATI have support for exFAT and EXT4 file systems.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your reply.

I am running windows 10 home ver21H1 64bit

The source disk is the main hardrive that ATI is installed on, a samsung SSD (dell laptop). I think there is only one partition on the drive.

ATI version is Crucial's 2019, Buil 21500

I am wondering do I just push ahead with the 'sector by sector' mode, or is there a more fundamental error I need to address?

Apologies for not giving much context. I thought I might just be told to crack on. I am trying to clone the laptop hardrive to a new crucial drive that I have connected via usb.

Craig, thanks for the further information.

If this is a Windows laptop then there are normally 2 or 3 partitions on the drive, plus for Dell laptops, a further factory restore partition is normally present too.  Those other partitions are normally hidden and marked as system partitions.

Before attempting to clone the drive, I would recommend running CHKDSK C: /F at a minimum, plus also strongly recommend making a full Disk backup of the source (internal) drive to an external USB backup drive - this is your safety net in case of problems arising.

Finally, it is not recommended to clone laptop drives to an external USB target drive as this may not be bootable later!

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your advice. 

I ran CHKDSK without any issues and it seemed to check just two drives (partitions), the main drive and a restoration drive. I have also run DISM check/scan/restore. I ran them all incase but no issues at any point.

I am confused about the next process i.e. whether I should follow the process of creating a bootable media and installing windows 10 on the new crucial drive, or do as advised on the crucial website and clone the current drive?

On the Crucial site:

/support/ssd/ssd-install/ssd-install-steps/part-2-copy

They advise connecting the new drive via USB and cloning the laptop hard drive to it?

You seem to be advising against this? Am I misinterpreting?

Craig, Acronis have never recommended the method being advised by Crucial for laptops because the introduction of additional hardware used to connect the target SSD can cause the cloned drive to be unbootable (as per the quote from KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - in my previous post).

There are two methods that can be used for this scenario, both using the Acronis bootable rescue media:

  1. Make a full disk Backup of the working original drive to an external USB storage drive.  Restore this after removing the original drive and installing the new SSD then booting from the rescue media using the correct BIOS boot mode.
     
  2. Remove the original drive, replace it by the new SSD connected via an external adapter or dock, then again boot the laptop from the rescue media to clone from the original drive to the installed SSD.

Of the two options, my own preference is the first one because the original drive is set aside away from any accidental damage or mistakes etc.
