2015 Rescue Media does not see my USB3 external hard drives

Thread needs solution

As the originator, of this thread, Acronis did provide me with a link, which allowed me to download an ISO image, from which I created a bootable media. This was to build 6574.

Yes this bootable media works fine, I have used it in anger, backing up, and recovering my operating system to/from my Seagate USB 3 External drives.

Unfortunately, the download from the link, is not a full release of Acronis TI build 6574; just a bootable media - I'm not convinced anyone has been provided with this latest release.

Interestingly, Acronis, are not the only company experiencing problems with Seagate USB drives: -

I have Genie Backup Manager 9.0 Pro, and the boot media, of this cannot see my Seagate USB 3 external drive - Genie, however, are happy to admit that they have a problem!

Norton (Symantec) have just released their upgrade of Internet Security, which is claimed to be compatible with Windows 1O. Very pretty, but this locks up, checking my Seagate USB 3 drives. Read more, here

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-internet-security-windows…

I'm beginning to get the message, it's time to replace these troublesome drives; but what for, I'm not sure!

Brian, WD drives work fine with ATI 2015, though I'm still not happy with the UI.

Thanks for your comment, Joe; I am seriously thinking about the My Book 3 - Not sure that the portable devices have the heat dissipation to be left on continuously, especially with heavy usage!

Sad thing is, that we should not be subject to all of these problems, with such stringent criteria being specified for these devices - Seagate appear to deny all responsibility, for this problem, but it is only with their drives, that it manifests!

I am waiting for release of Windows 10, when hopefully, these problems, may disappear - But I'm not holding my breath!

It with cost me over £180 to replace my Seagates, with WD, and there's no guarantee, that they will resolve all issues!

Brian, I've had My Book drives for years and work them pretty hard- and so far, never a problem. I'll probably also switch to W10, but I'm in no hurry- first I want to see what others say about it.

Just a reminder, if you find my posts earlier in this thread, you will see that I was reporting problems with WD drives, not Seagate. So don't make the mistake of thinking that Seagate is the problem with Acronis. BTW, I'm typing this from my brand new Mac (with the incredible Time Machine backup software that comes out of the box). Acronis and many other windows problems finally drove me away.

AOMEI Backupper avail from http://www.aomeitech.com/. It's free for non commercial use. It's features includes cloning, universal restore (restoring to dissimilar hardware), mounting an image, PXE boot (whatever that is). Of course you can build boot media also.
It always recognized by USB 3 drives, Seagate 2tb and 5tb, and, WD.

They also have a Partition Assistant software, as well as a PE builder, that includes Backupper, Partition Assistant, and other utils. You can also add your own apps to the disc. They have lots of great software. I think there going to be a thorn for Acronis.

Upgraded my Dell XPS 18 from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 and now True Image 2015 will not recognize my 500 GB boot drive or the 32 GB SSD drive! In addition, I cannot restore my backed up Windows 8.0 because during the restore it greys out the entire 500 GB boot drive saying it's unsupported! So I can't restore my Windows 8.0 backup nor can I backup the new Windows 8.1 install!

That's nuts. And when I upgraded it wiped out my 32GB Intel Rapid start installation and apparently the SSD drive as well. And it won't re-install either (Intel application).

Acronis is losing me again. I get tired of finding backups corrupted, unable to restore as it won't recognize a boot drive (that's the original hard drive as installed by Dell on the XPS 18), etc.

Tried Paragon and it's able to see my boot drive (7 partitions or 6 not sure).

In addition, when I installed the ACronis True Image 2015 my system would boot from legacy meaning the boot partitions would boot via BIOS. No longer. Now it only boots from UEFI Windows Boot manager (bootloader missing in BIOS now--the entire sections is gone).

Larry, this is the first time I've heard of a relationship between W8.1 and the problem of ATI2015 "seeing" the drives after updating from W8- very interesting.

Personally, I've just about had it with both MS and Acronis. Another guy here recently said he's moved to Apple. That'll be my next computer!

Yesterday when I tried to install an optional MS update- one that is supposed to help prepare my system for upgrading to W10- it screwed up the OS, the 3rd time an MS update did this- what happened is that upon booting up, the system looks like it's running in first gear- slow as molasses. Luckily, I had created a Restore Point first- and restored the OS from that. I've now turned off all MS updates. Hey, if it ain't broke- don't fix it.

Any chance you could uninstall the W8.1 back to W8?

Luckily, so far, my ATI 2015 does see my SSD boot drive and my WD USB external drive- but I'm really getting to hate the ATI 2015 UI. Especially if trying to do a full restore- it can see the drives but to initiate the restore you need to right click on the drive then choose to do the restore- which is a really stupid UI feature. There should be a button to click which says RESTORE.

I wonder if Apple McIntosh computers are constantly needing updates?
Joe

PS: I wish the UI for this forum would have a button that says "POST"- instead of the stupid "SAVE" button- I don't want to save it - I want to post it!

Oh, dear, we are back to square One!

Acronis kindly sent me an ISO image, for Build 6567, Recovery media, which resolved the issue of Seagate USB 3 drives not being viewed/detected!

This worked fine - I could see all of my external hard drives!

Now the have released Build 6613 - Low and behold, the Recovery CD media, cannot see/detect my Seagate USB 3 external hard drives

Will they ever get it right!

OUCH - I too was wondering if it was going to work in 6613. Just installed it. Haven't built a recovery cd as of yet.

I see they are trying to get us to upgrade to a new version ahead of Win 10. For me, hell will freeze over before I upgrade, unless they fix this issue and the other interface problems with ATI.

Hi Brian, storageman, Chris... Yes, indeed, they are now pushing the so called "Acronis True Image Unlimited", as I have received an email with their offer.

In all truth, though, I must say that I also made a recovery CD and used it to perform a backup, and yes, my external drive was listed there, so the issue may have some other "convolutions" other than what immediately comes to sight.
In any case, I wonder why they are now come out pushing that "Unlimited" new version, with the argument that it will be good with Windows 10... As far as I know, all ATI versions since and including 2013 are all Windows 10 compatible, so I may be missing something...

Acronis has indicated that 2014 and prior will NOT be Windows 10 compatible.

Windows 10 compatible will begin with 2015 and newer.

If you have trouble with build 6613 after upgrade you should shutdown (Power Off ) your machine and restart then try again to access your external drives.

"If you have trouble with build 6613 after upgrade you should shutdown (Power Off ) your machine and restart then try again to access your external drives."

EnchantecH!

I can see my Seagate USB 3 external drives, from within Windows, with Acronis 2015, Build 6613; but NOT with 2015 Build 6613 Bootable media - That is the recovery CD.

So I'm a little confused by your suggestion of Power OFF and Restart - This does not relate to using the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media!

Hi Grover, Enchantech, Brian! Thanks for your inputs.

@Grover: First of all, Congratulations for your new title!... In my humble opinion, if anyone deserved it, you're the one.
As what regards the Windows 10 compatibility, I speak based on my personal experience alone. I had TI 2010 installed in one machine, TI2012 in another one, and TI2013 in a third one. When Windows 10 first came with the compatibility tests, 2010 and 2012 were reported as non-compatible applications and 2013 passed the test. The machine where the 2013 was installed came out clean. So, by logical deduction, I thought that, starting with 2013 and forward, all versions would be compatible. Apparently this is not the case. But why or how would the Windows 10 compatibility test come up clean with TI2013 and not with the other two?

@Enchantech and Brian: Yes, the issue with the "invisible" external drives has always been within the rescue media, not the Windows environment. It's also of interest to note that I could not see my external drives when trying to restore an image that had been done using TI2015 in Windows. But I could see them and did in fact restore such image using TI2014 rescue media. Not being an expert, I leave any possible conclusions for those who know these products much better than I. Indeed, why? One is tempted to say that it must have to do with TI2015. (Edited: It is important to note that the events described in this paragraph occurred prior to the newest build 6613 being made available.)

Be it as it may, what I feel more shocking is if in fact the new version 6613 brings back that issue that seemed to have been resolved by a previous build (6567), as someone stated before. Now, as I said before, I did a backup and then a file validation with the rescue media from version 6613 and this shows that, in my case, the external drive had to be visible.

What do you all make out of this?

Sorry to point out the obvious, but according to your comment, if the user comments related to 2015-6133 are valid, it means that ABSOLUTELY ZERO ACRONIS PRODUCTS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH W10.

Our firm bought 4 copies of 2015, which have zero value.... After a 8 month wait in which Acronis told us...just wait for the win 10 version and all will be fixed.

The companies behavior is indescribably bad...

If your 6613 recovery media built from within the Windows installation fails to recognize your USB 3.0 external drive you should visit the Support page, logon to your account. Choose Products and Downloads, expand your 2015 product, click on recovery media, click the download button, save the file to your preferred location, recreate your recovery media using this new ISO file.

Hi Enchantech,

Can you please elaborate on your statement:

then using the Media Builder function in the installed Acronis 2015 app pointed to the new file build a new recovery media.

Not sure what you mean by "app pointed to the new file build a new recovery media."

I have downloaded recovery media, from My Account, and saved to desktop.

Does this automatically instal into 2015, or do I have to do something

I have opened Acronis 2015 Build 6613, Gone to Tools, and selected Rescue Media Builder, which allows me to Create a Rescue Media

Please disregard that part of my comment. It was meant for a different post but I am doing this using a cell phone and somehow that got inserted here. I will edit it out. The file you downloaded is in ISO form already so just recreate your recovery media using that file.

Exactly. This is the way I always create my Acronis rescue media: From the "Bootable Media" tab of the specific product in the page "My Products & Downloads" under My Account. I still miss the reason of why creating the rescue media from the Windows installation would be different than if created from the Download tab of "My Account". I am not suggesting there is no reason. I am confessing that I just don't understand why there should be one at all.

@Brian: Can you please tell us how you created your first rescue media? And if you did it from the Windows install environment, did you encounter a different outcome when you used your Account tab, as far as the end result turned out to be?

Just curious...

Hi Enchantech,

Thank you for update.

Yes, I have now created a bootable media, from the ISO download.

Unfortunately, this still cannot see/detect my Seagate USB III external drives; only my internal hard and Solid State drives

I have repeated tests, with Build 6567, and this works perfectly

Regards

Brian

LinYu

I created my original 6613 Rescue Media, from within Windows, but as you can see, from above, the ISO download does not resolve the issue!

I guess you answered my question!... Thanks.

Now, back to what I had mentioned before: How can they have issued build 6567 with that problem resolved and later on, with build 6613, go back to square one?

The question has been asked before and is almost impossible not to repeat it: Can Acronis do anything right and in time? I am concerned as a long term client. And I would be even more alarmed if I were a company shareholder... Wouldn't anyone?

Gosh!...

Hi Enchantech,

Yes, if you have the muscle to elevate this entire ATI 2015-xxxx to a person who understands the technical aspects and how utterly inept this shows Acronis to be...and of course a real solution, that would be more than helpful! Taking a long view of what has transpired is that basically since v2010-7160, the rescue cd, whether created by web downloading the ISO from a customer's online Acronis account OR by creating the RESCUE disk from within the an installed Windows installed ATI app, there really should never be a difference. These two methods are forever joined from a customer prospective and should (must) produce identical LINUX Rescue disks. And in both situations, for a given product/version the "about" I'd pulldown should agree.

If these variants are not identical, then it shows Acronis has very poor SW version control routines at their company. Regardless of all the 8 months of external drives /USB not functioning in a stable condition, which working perfectly well under 2014-xxx, a rather large number of customers have been vocal here....and I suspect many others have been backing up with v2015-pre 6567 not knowing that they will not be able to recover from a system crash...indeed this is clearly possible if, for example, they are using a PC equipped only with USB3 ports.

So monthly later, very quietly Acronis released a Linux Rescue ISO (6567) not posted on line and offered
Only to a vocal few. This still left other customers the inability to create a working Rescue disk from within the Win ATI program.

So a few days ago, without any announcement or notice to customers, not even registered customers got the courtesy of a notification by email, v 2915-6613 as a full set was posted. Within hours, it appears the RESCUE BUG has returned. Of course on the same day, Acronis was able to sent out emails to customers for a mysterious group of win10 compatible products....at a price. Since no mention as to this NEW version being a "fixed" v2015 m which should be free, or is it version 2016 vxxxx, just recently at stage 3 beta??

Still, until today, not any official statement from Acronis, no apology no special offer no, well NOTHING...apparently Acronis feels that everything is just splendid.

Robert-abg said, "I suspect many others have been backing up with v2015-pre 6567 not knowing that they will not be able to recover from a system crash...indeed this is clearly possible if, for example, they are using a PC equipped only with USB3 ports. "

I managed a system recovery while using USB3 ports from my 4G WD "My Book". This was after a MS update trashed my system. I then tried to do the restore, but at first had no luck, thanks to the lame UI- which doesn't make it clear that you need to right click on the chosen .tib file- though ATI saw the file. So I then spent several hours in an online chat session with a tech- that proved fruitless- then I tried again and finally right clicked on the chosen file and it worked!

So, is the problem the USB3 ports or is it certain external drives?

Currently, just to be safe, I now do back ups to both the external drive and a 2nd internal drive- alternating each day. At the end of the day, I do the backup so I'm never more than a day late.

But with all this discussion, I'm not fully confident that it will work again! It probably will, but I'd prefer to be at least 99% certain. I'm now thinking of moving all my computer to a Macintosh- as another guy here said he's going. This is all way too stressful.
Joe

PS: if any ATI techs are reading this- FIX THAT UI PROBLEM- once ATI sees the .tib file, make it perfectly clear what to do next- but having a button on the screen which says "click here to restore" or just "restore now" or whatever.

Update to my earlier comment. Yesterday I installed 6613 on my Win 8.1 system (only system with ATI 2015 installed). I then prepared for full recovery. The New 6613 rescue media found my USB 3.0 disk enclosure using the PC's USB 3.0 ports and was able to perform a complete recovery. I'll also comment that my 6567 Rescue media also worked, but the original 6688 build did not see my USB 3.0 drives. This battle seems like it will never end. There must be a further problem with the Seagate equipment.

I'm broadly in agreement with what robert-abg wrote.

Consistently, for a long period of time, Acronis behavior has been rather incomprehensible. Even this latest offer of Acronis Unlimited version sounds out of the ordinary. It is being presented at the exact same time the company is introducing a new build (6613) that brings back issues that seemed to have been resolved by a previous interim build (6567) of its 2015 version.

The current presentation by email seems to be different from the one advertised at the Acronis website. For starters, the version being offered by email does not make reference to being cloud located, as is the case of the one at the webpage. Also, the email offer states that the price presented covers a 1-year subscription and, starting with the second-year subscription, the annual price will be $169.99 for a 3-computer license. They must be kidding!... :) It looks like an outrageous price to me. It's over sixty dollars per computer/year, which sounds like too expensive.

Of course, one can always say "hey, take it or leave it, no one is forced to keep subscribing"... True. But it's disgusting.

One last point: Neither of these offers comes with a word from Acronis about what is it, exactly, that they are trying to sell: what added value, if any, for the user who already has all (or a number) of their previous versions, any issues being solved, any improved features or even a simple UI improvement... Nothing! Just that this Unlimited version is Windows 10 compatible. And weary of all the numerous issues of recent times with the latest versions, one has to wonder...

I for one, will deeply regret it if this all comes an end like the saying... Till Acronis do us part!...

Sincerely hope it will not come to that.

Hi LinYu,

I'm not even considering investing, in Acronis Unlimited, certainly not until Acronis resolve this Seagate USB III issue, with 2015!

Acronis sound very confident with this Unlimited version, which they claim is compatible with Windows 10 - I'm holding my breath!

Perhaps it might be safer NOT to hold your breath!

To reinforce LinYu's post, there is no way, as a personal user, that I will pay $100 annually to back up each of my family's 2 computers, when Windows offers a backup tool for free (admittedly with less features). I am not a business and nor am I a cash cow. That mean that when my current older versions of ATI reach the end of life (probably when I buy new PCs with Win10) I will move elsewhere. That will be a shame, since Acronis products have served me very well, until this last fiasco.

Hi Everyone,

thank you for your comments.

We are very sorry for the confusion caused by promo emails and we already delivered your feedback to marketing team.

All editions of Acronis True Image 2015 (subscription and perpetual licenses) support Windows 10 starting from Update 2 (build 6613).
Please find details in this article.

As for the problem with recognition of external drives, according to our tracking the fix is included in 6613.

Brian, can you please send me an exact model of your disk in a PM so that I could clarify the situation with development?

Does anyone else encounter this problem with build 6613 (especially if disks were recognized in build 6567)?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Anna,

Thanks for coming here.

I am not reporting problems on the "invisibility" of external drives when using TI2015 rescue media, at this time. I did face that same problem before the recent patch was applied. However, I would like to take the opportunity of your "visit" to make a suggestion and ask one question, if you wouldn't mind.

The question:

It is the general perception among Acronis customers/users that the quality of the Acronis products has been in a slippery slope, so to speak, for quite a while. Parallel to this factual notion has been the growing perception that the quality of Acronis customer care services have also been noticeably degrading. What would you offer as a comment about these worries, be them actual facts or just baseless perceptions? And if you think they are just subjective perceptions, how do you think they may have come to surface?

And the suggestion:

In my view, your appearance here today was a fine gesture on the part of yourself and the Acronis management. Don't you think that someone from Acronis (either yourself or someone else) should come to the forums and make themselves visible when deemed necessary (but quite more frequently) to shed some clarification or provide guidance on important issues being discussed? I would think that such actions would go a long way towards building goodwill and a much better understanding among the users about the issues and the way they are being handled by Acronis, as well as providing a gauge on solutions being found and applied to such issues. I am also sure you would agree on this. So the suggestion prompts another question: Why is it not being done?

Believe me, I make this observations with a positive mind. I am a long term user a frequent "promoter" of the TI products and I would feel terribly sad if I ever had to face myself with the hard decision to part...

Thanks again.

I would like to check the status of this issue.
I just downloaded TI 2015v2 with the hope that it might help with recognition of an external USB HD.

Before v2, operation seemed spotty.
Sometimes the boot wouldn't proceed fully.
Sometimes the USB HD wouldn't be recognized at all (although Windows *does* see the USB HD).
Sometimes once the imaging process is fully configured and launched, there is no progress at all.

Now with v2:
It appears that the imaging process, while fully configured and launched, isn't making progress ... as before.
Should I post a new question about this? I think I will.....

It seems to me that there is an error in the build 6613 ISO image of rescue disc. When I create rescue media (CD or USB Flash Drive) from the installed product ATI2015 6613 and boot from these, then the external discs are seen. The external discs are not seen when running from the rescue CD created from the downloaded ISO image. There are 4 files on the CD created from the ISO image that are a different size, which suggests different version, compared to the Rescue Media created from the installed product. The files are kernel.dat kernel64.dat ramdisk.dat ramdisk64.dat

Well, I created a CD from the installed product *v2* and it didn't help. This after doing the same with an earlier release of 2015.
So, while interesting to know about those files, the situation seems not improved.
While I don't like it as well, Clonezilla is doing the job for now.....

@Alan, @Fred,

As I mentioned in a previous post, my rescue media was made from "version 2" at the Download page in my Acronis Account and it DOES see my external drive. Now Alan describes a situation where, in his own case, the opposite is happening. What else can I tell you guys?

Your observation of the difference in the DAT files between versions has been passed along. You might well be on to something there as the end products should be the same although slight differences in size may well exist between the two.

More on Build 6613
I have found that using the WIN-PE based Rescue Media is useful for 2 reasons. I can only report on my own experience of it but in my case it does see the external discs and also gets round the problem of the standard Rescue Media not supporting my graphics card.
Its not too difficult but did take quite a long time. You may not want to do this if you pay for your broadband by the Gigabyte.
From your Acronis account you can download the Media Add-on (Free Plugin). Double click the downloaded file to install it.
From the installed TI2015 build 6613 go to Tools, then Rescue Media Builder and select WINPE-based Media. This will lead you to download and install the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit from Microsoft, this was a long, long, long download though I probably downloaded more components than was necessary. You can then create the WIN-PE based Rescue Media on USB Flash Drive or CD etc

Did you do something special to get Win-PE working at all? I installed the Windows 8.1 ADK and the other program ATI need to create the Win-PE boot media. I was successful in creating a Win-PE flash drive. But when booting it: DISK ERROR

Do you run it form a flash drive or DVD?

I'm so disappointed with this all; I just payed big bucks for especially the image recovery. It is -not- working at all. The "normal" ATI boot media does boot and gets me into ATI program. But when choosing recovery is does see any drives at all. So no internal/external
Then clicking on 'Browse for backups' stalls the program totally.
