DLLHOST and Explorer Conflict

I have a clean install of Windows 8 X64. I have installed TIH2013 version 5551. As others have reported explorer either opens very slowly or doesn't open at all. Apparently this is due to some conflict involving Com Surrogate / DLLHOST. I have tried a variety of solutions - one by one to no avail.
I have renamed the " ti_managers_proxy.dll" per one suggestion on the forum. I have disabled the NonStopBackup Service and the and the Sync Agent Service. I have also turned off TibMounterMonitor.exe and TrueImageMonitor.exe and kept them from starting at boot time. I have also kept TIshell64.dll from starting. There are a few more items I could keep from starting using the Autoruns program but I'm starting to get discouraged by having to go through this process. I have no account and have never used the sync service. What else must I do to resolve this issue - short of deinstalling the application which does resolve the issue?

Thank you. I tried your suggestion but still the same problem. This is a home installed Windows 8

Have you tried disabling W8 'fastboot' ?
DLLHOST is a collection of processes that run, I think the only two ways of finding out what is clashing is either the 'hit and miss' method - disable all items in MSConfig that aren't Microsoft items and then bring them back one at a time until the problems starts occurring, or, download and run Process Explorer from the Microsoft SysInternals suite and see if the problem can be pinpointed there.
Of course W8 has a much better task manager than earlier Windows, so checking the process that are running here might give a clue before downloading Process Explorer from the MS website.

I've done as you suggested. After installing Process Explorer the only thing I observe is the continual starting and stopping of DLLHOST. I've been forced to remove TIH 2013 in order to be able to use my computer. I'm not sure what the next step is. Probably Contact Acronis and see what they have to say

I think that might be the best course of action Stephen, run an Acronis System Report beforehand and attach it to your ticket request.

I see this problem, too. Originally I saw it on Windows 7 when ATI 2013 first came out and I reported it here:
I did not use ATI 2013 since it was not usable and I reverted to ATI 2011 which had been working fine since.
But on Christmas day I upgraded from Win7 Pro (64-bit) to Win8 Pro (64-bit) and the Win8 pre-installer required me to uninstall ATI 2011.
I did the uninstall and used the 2011 Cleanup Utility and manually cleared out the registry Upper/lower filters, etc.
The Windows 8 in-place installations then proceeded fine and I installed ATI 2013 a few days later when I was confident that Windows 8 was working well.
I have since run a full image backup from both the bootable recovery media DVD and the Windows 8 desktop using ATI 2013.
I don't see any errors or warnings in the Event viewer on most restarts (except for a DHCP error because my network adapter is still running the old Win 7 driver and no new one is available yet).
Usually Windows Explorer works fine. But every now and then I get that long freeze when I look at drives and folders.
When this happens I sometimes see this error in the event viewer:
"The server {1EF75F33-893B-4E8F-9655-C3D602BA4897} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."
{1EF75F33-893B-4E8F-9655-C3D602BA4897} is the ti_manager_proxy.dll.
I still don't know what causes this, but eventually it seems to go away if I wait it out or restart.
It is very annoying.
Initially I had everything installed from ATI2013 in default settings, but when I saw this occurring I disabled the Acronis Sync Agent Service and Nonstop Backup Service and OS selector activator. I also disabled the 'VersionPageShellExt' in CCleaner using the Tools->Startup->Context Menu tool.
These things have been attempted by others and they may work.
So far, whatever I tried seems to not really help. The problem comes back sooner or later.
I have not been able to figure out what causes it to happen. The last time it happened when I was moving a URL link to a folder. The green progress bar moved very, very slowly.
When this occurred I went to the desktop and clicked my computer icon and it also froze showing an empty view for a long time.
By 'long time' I mean at least a minute, maybe more I didn't time it.
Nothing in my hardware has changed and I reported this to Acronis with lots of dumps and data, but nothing seemed to have come of that.
I guess it is one of those things that is context specific.
One thing that may be relevant is that I have a large file system. I have 6 SATA drives attached and they have a lot of data. When ran Windows Defender for a full scan it took about a day to complete. If Acronis is doing some type of file system scan, that could take a long time on my system.

The ti_proxy problem is known by Acronis, the workaround is to rename that file to anything you want.

Are we talking about the same file?
I renamed "C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ti_managers_proxy.dll" to
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ti_managers_proxy.dll---" and restarted.
After the restart, there was no desktop or Windows 8 Start screen - just a blank desktop image.
I had the 'busy' icon showing for a long time. I could not see any context menus.
A Control-Alt-Delete let me restart.
After the restart, Windows replaced the file back the way it was.

I think Jim you might have mistyped your post - you have the before and after the same :) .
I'm not sure how Windows renamed it back again as it isn't a native system file. Windows didn't try to stop you changing its name due to it being in use by any chance?
I would try again, just add '.old' to the 'dll' suffix.

Before it had the extension '.dll'

I'll try again.

OK, this time I used ".old" and it seemed to work.
I don't know what I did the first time, but I've been working on Win 8 constantly since Christmas, so I'm a bit batty right now.
I reported this problem 6 months ago and there's still no official fix? I could not find anything in the Knowledge Base that helped.

Brilliant!
I'm not sure how well Windows copes with -- at the end of file names, unlike Linux which is quite happy with such things.
I'm assuming that this is something that will be fixed in the next build whenever that is due to come out.

Just to re-iterate and confirm.
True Image 2013 has been very solid for me lately.
I am running Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.
Here is a summary of what I did to eliminate the shell freeze situation:
Disable these Acronis services:
Nonstop backup; OS selector; Sync Agent
Enable these Acronis services:
Scheduler2
Use CCleaner and go to Tools->Startup->Context Menu:
Disable Acronis directory and file context menus
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome
Rename ti_managers_proxy.dll to ti_managers_proxy.old
It may be that not all of these are really necessary, but this is my current situation.
Naturally, if you need the sync or nonstop backup services, don't try this.
I also have Acronis Disk Director 11 which does not seem to be affected by this, just mentioning...

Hello all,
Thank you for your reports.
Actually, this issue can be divided to 2 parts.
1) Explorer works incorrectly, it works slower, etc.
We will create a fix in 1-2 days and will publish it here for verification.
2) Com surrogate failure.
We are still unable to create a permanent fix for the issue because we can't reproduce it in our test lab. We tried to create a "theoretical" fix several times with no luck.
Is anybody able to provide us with a remote access to the system where the error is stably reproducible?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello all,
We have created a fix that, we hope, should fix the issue.
If you experience some difficulties in using Windows Explorer after ATIH 2013 installation (i.e. it works slower), please perform the below actions:
Please uinpack the file attached to this message and copy it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome
After that restart the program and see if the issue remains.
Please note that this file shouldn't fix Com surrogate failure.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

So far it seems to be OK. I restarted a few times and explored a few drives, folders and libraries.
[Don't forget to 'Unblock' the download in it's file properties to remove the ADS.]
Since this sometimes takes a while to occur, or get triggered by some specific thing, if I see anything odd, I'll post back.

Hello Jim,
Thank you for the feedback.
If the issue reappears, please let us know about it.
Thank you.

It's been working very well.
In fact, I had an opportunity to try a restore of my system drive this morning.
I just installed the new Chrome 24 version and it caused constant browser crashes. Using the older version gave me a warning about a bad profile (because the new one overwrote it). I restored my older profile, but it still complained.
Rather than go through the hassle of recreating all my Chrome settings, I just restored my entire C: partition from yesterday.
It only takes about 15 minutes, a lot shorter than setting up all those defaults. I keep as much as possible off this partition so that this is as quick and painless as possible.
Thanks. The product is often a pain to set up, but once it is working correctly it is great.

Hello all,
Thank you for taking time to contact us.
Lolo,
Is the SSD disk recognized from within Windows?
Please send us the screenshot of Disk Management window (Start->Run->diskmgmt.msc).
Also, please obtain Acronis system report under Windows from the Help section of the program and obtain Acronis system report under Acronis Boot media.
I am sending a link to FTP account via Private messages.
Thank you.

Did you checked the SATA controller mode in your motherboard BIOS?
If you can, try to switch from "AHCI"/"Enhanced" to "IDE"/"Compatible".
Switch back to previous mode after restore and BEFORE starting again Windows.
Cheers

SSDs are recognized by the system and the other backup porograma smoothly.
are not recognized by Acronis in Windows 8 64-bit if they are initiated.
if I do a secure erase unrecognized pueddo not restore backup.
if I format and start, yes, but I have to start using other programs to do so.
I can not do capture the Disk Manager as the SSD when I do the secure erase is the system and when this happens I have no operating system or anything.

Hi, sorry for my poor english
I had the same problem with "DLLHOST and Explorer Conflict" few time ago, first I did not think about conflict with true image 2013, so I decide what I should have done before it's to come here.
for me I get conflict when I use an usb key and deconnected it, then the problem with explorer starts, it's only today that I find that problem was due to true image 2013 (as I never had problem with version 2012) so as soon I uninstall true image 2013 and before I restart my PC, the bug is gone.
So what I think really about it , it will be nice to get from acronis an update soon and efficient for this problem.
It's a long time I used true image, I'll always find it very good and I never face a such problem before version 2013.

Well, for me the fix ti_managers_proxy.zip works fine. The problem was on Vista x64 and TIH 2013, windows explorer often froze.
Sometimes when OS boots all the icons of the shortcuts on the desktop are white or empty. They keep working but if I press the right mouse button on any file, explorer totally freezes and only reboot helps. On the same PC (i5 3570k, Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H, HD4000, 8 GB Transcend 1600 MHz, Patriot Wildfire 120 Gb) windows 7 and 8 with TIH 2013 works fine.
Now all the problems are gone, thanks for the fix!

The fix works pretty well, still there's an impact in performance, explorer have some occasional hiccups browsing directories. First time opening explorer and desktop icons at boot the icons are empty white but they load in 4-5 seconds. Then closing and opening again it works fine.

Hello all,

Hi to everyone,
thanks a lot for your help.
I reinstall trueimage not long ago (win7_64) and as soon the bug occures I will try the two solutions (patch and "Acronis Sync Agent Service") and let you know.
So I must say that since I used true image, I mostly use the programm on a cd or usb key boot.
Thanks again.
Nice day to everyone

Hi Oleg,
I'm still not sure the hiccups aren't from something else. I'm cleaning and I will use one full day the PC without the fix and servies stopped.
When I'll be sure nothing else is messing I will enable it and check with and without delayed start and I'll let you know.
Thanks

@Oleg... Thank you for providing ti_managers_proxy.zip (236.91 KB)!!!
Finally, the ti_managers_proxy.dll in that ZIP file fixed the **extremely** frustrating issue of Windows Explorer constantly hanging/freezing due to the Acronis TrueIamge 2013 context menu "COM Surrogate" code, even when Acronis was removed from the context menu.
I spent many hours tracking down what was causing the problem. Although I discovered that I was able to very temporarily "fix" the problem by ending the "COM Surrogate" DLLHost process, the Acronis DLLHost problem has kept recurring which has been crippling my productivity.
Problems included: 1) open Windows Explorer to My Computer... hang, 2) right-click... hang, 3) show folder contents... no file icons.
I've used Acronis TrueImage for many years. This is the first time I've experienced such a significant problem with an Acronis producty. I hope that in the future such a problem can be avoided with all necessary testing and if it does occur, fixed sooner than it appears this problem was fixed given that it appears to have been reported as far back as 9/6/2012 (http://forum.acronis.com/fr/forum/35326). A similar problem was reported for Acronis TrueImage Home 2010 (http://forum.acronis.com/fr/forum/4711), so it should be high on the list of things to test for any Acronis TrueImage product release.
I'm running Windows 7 with Acronis TrueImage 2013's Nonstop Backup Service and Sync Agent disabled. I also have Raxco Perfect Disk 12 installed and Windows Search disabled.

Hello all,
Thank you very much for the feedback.
I want to say that I agree with Rene, behavior of this kind shouldn't re-appear in the future releases. We have rebuilt appropriate module significantly, I hope this issue will not arise again.
Thank you.

Hello Oleg,
in the consolidation I thought here archives need the exclusive mode because of problem mentioned to these thread # 38423 and this one there shoot.
All archives were, (according to the Process-Explorer/find .tib) of dllhost.exe in the access on my PC.
Since this one always is weeks situation.
Correct, the pruning function abortierte integrated in this task always and very regularly made the saving part to the task every time.
I installed yours fix "ti_managers_proyx.zip" which has taken remedial action apparently.
The task is running now until end and consolidation is executed.
The daily backups worked correctly till now on 3 days.
It the problem has left "Com Surrogate = dllhost.exe".
Regular inquiries (with Process-Explorer) during the backup run, showed that the archives were taken suddenly, in the middle during the backup run, of dllhost.exe into access.
This situation does not change until end of the backup run either any more.
However, this run, without bugs this one comes at end.
If the Acronis job comes to an end, the archives remain assigned "to dllhost.exe", however, still.
The CPU is charged by approx. 25.0% at a Quadroprozessor I7-870.
A very high quota this CPU .
The dllhost.exe is never ended!
Deleting the process manually (with Process-Explorer) is ineffective!
Further on:
can not executed "remove hardware for certain", to undock this device.
Report:
by chance:.
"This device cannot give free, is just used....... closed all programs or Windows used this Decive.....
Only by power-off at the external drive the situation has to be cleared up.
Once more, thank you for the fix.
But It remains the question, what can i do, to finish these eternal drive blockades by "Com Surrogate"?
Yours sincerely

Hello Okieh,
Thank you for taking time to contact us.
Most probably, the issue you are experiencing is not related to the ti_managers_proxy.dll file provided.
Could you please obtain a full dump by means Process Explorer? Reproduce the issue, run Process Explorer as administrator, make right-click on dllhost.exe -> Create dump file -> Create full dump. Send us the dump file, I am sending a link to a FTP account via PMs.
Thank you.

I employed the fix, and it has seems to be working fine.
What is very troubling is that I received a new TIB 2013 disk today, installed it, then installed the latest version by Internet download, and the latest version still would not work properly until I downloaded and installed the fix.
If the "fixed" file is not in the latest download version, one must be dismayed.

Hi John,
I got the info from your recent thread post.
My questions:
1. What error you got on your PC?
2. What is the name of the fixes you've put in place?
3. Have you used the "Process Explorer" with the function "Find .tib"?
What is found by this query, after the end of a back-up run?
I ask these questions, because there is still a further fix may be used.
This further fix clarifies the situation with the never-ending "dllhost.exe"-processes.
After a certain time, the CPU which claim almost entirely.
The system is slower and slower, almost freezes.

John Coyle wrote:What is very troubling is that I received a new TIB 2013 disk today, installed it, then installed the latest version by Internet download,
Why would you do that? Why would you install the version from the disk and then immediately afterwards install the latest downloadable build? The downloadable build will always be the latest available, so there's no value in first installing from the disk.
John Coyle wrote:If the "fixed" file is not in the latest download version, one must be dismayed.
This fix is not yet present in the ATI build available for download. Acronis plans to incoporate the fix into the next released build.

I am not staff and am not paid. I provide help on a volunteer basis on my own time.

I was having a great deal of trouble with TI 2013 with freezes to the point of having to remove the laptop's battery to get unfrozen.
Today, I installed TI 2013 on a test laptop that had been stripped to Windows XP SP3, TI 2013, and nothing else.
TI 2013 ran well on the stripped down laptop.
I cleaned up the desktop on the laptop that I usually work on, moving as many icons off the desktop as possible in hope of setting the stage for a progressive elimination of processes until the bug that was causing TI 2013 to freeze was discovered.
Happy surprise: A newest version install of TI 2013 ran very, very well, as well as TI 10 did, with no program removal or other bug-hunting efforts.
I suspect that there was a bug fix since my last unhappy encounter, but all seems to be going nicely now.
