"Error loading operating system" on TI restore
I resized my system partition with DD 2011 and rebooted only to see "Error loading operating system". I then tried to restore to my last backup I made with TI 2011 and was confronted with the same error.
2TB drive with 3 partitions - system, apps, and data
2TB drive for backups
Windows XP with SP3
About 8 months ago I moved my system to a single 2TB drive. I ran into lots of trouble and almost lost everything. So I bought a second drive and I bought an acronis bundle with both DD and TI so I would never be in that situation again. Unfortunately that isn't how life works.
I needed to resize my system partition (effectively the steps were shrink data partition, shift apps partition, expand system partition) and was thrilled that I had my handy dandy DD to replace my partition magic, which symantec devoted to destruction. The resize finished successfully, but the subsequent reboot failed with the error, "Error loading operating system".
Things I tried:
- boot into the recovery console from the install disk (actually I uses a slipstream disk of XP with SP3)
- tried fixmbr, then fixboot, then both
- Confirmed the system is looking at the correct drive during boot
It's at this point I tried to restore from my TI backup with acronis boot disk (I had generated the acronis disk previously), but it resulted in the same outcome. I did a full disk restore with the inclusion of them mbr and sector zero.
I am at a loss, plus I'm a bit depressed that I put forth the effort (what I thought was a good effort) to avoid this very problem, and I am once again in a situation where it could take me months to reinstall, and reconfigure my box to get it back to where I had it. So I'm hoping that someone has some insight into how I might fix mine boxen, or at the very least, why did this happen?
