How to create a Windows 8 Release Preview build 8400 Windows PE 4.0 Boot ISO with Acronis True Image Home 2013 beta and Acronis Disk Director 11 Update 2 integrated. Be sure both True Image Home 2013, and Disk Director 11 Update 2 are installed before beginning. Download and install Windows 7 AIK. Download and apply the Windows 7 SP1 AIK Supplement (optional). Install Windows 8 Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). Only two components need to be downloaded and installed from the Windows 8 ADK for our use. They are the Deployment Tools and the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE v4.0). We will only be dealing with the x86 (32bit) WinPE 4.0 environment for this procedure. If you are working on a 32bit system, please change all references to "Program Files(x86) to "Program Files" in the instructions that follow. These instructions assume your System Drive is "C". Be sure to change the paths to reflect your system configuration. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools" folder. Rename the "x86" folder to something else. I used "x86-PE3". Navigate to the "C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\" folder. Copy the "Media" folder to the "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools" folder. Rename the "Media" folder in "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools" to "x86". Navigate to the "C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us" folder. Copy the "winpe.win" file displayed, into the "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86" folder, and also to your desktop for use later. Navigate to the "C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Deployment Tools\x86\Oscdimg" folder. Copy the "etfsboot.com" file displayed into the "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86\Boot" folder. At this point we have what we need to integrate Acronis True Image Home into the winpe.win file on your desktop. To integrate Acronis True Image Home 2013 in WinPE 4.0 winpe.wim: Navigate to "C:\Program Files(x86)\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome". Double click on winpe_iso.exe to start the Acronis WinPE ISO builder. We are not building an ISO with this program, only updating the winpe.wim file on our desktop. Click "Next" to continue. Click on "Desktop". There should be a "winpe.wim" file listed in the selection window (It may be at the very bottom of the list). Click on the "winpe.wim" file, and click "Next". The next screen that appears is the destination selection screen for the modified ".wim" file. Save the modified ".wim" file to your desktop using ATIH2013.wim as the file name by clicking "Next". You will see a summary screen that shows where the "WIM" image file is located that you are modifying, as well as the Acronis WinPE directory, and the target that should be "ATIH2013.wim" in your "desktop" folder. Click "Proceed" to create the new "ATIH2013.wim" file on your desktop. Acronis Media Builder should mount the ".wim" file, integrate "Acronis True Image Home 2013" into the new ".wim" file, and unmount the ".wim" file. If you were successfull in creating a new file on your "Desktop" called "ATIH2013.wim", we are ready to build an ISO image with Acronis Disk Director Home 11 Update 2. To integrate Acronis Disk Director Home 11 Update 2 into our modified WinPE ".wim" file we created, and make a bootable ISO: copy the "ATIH2013.wim" file to the "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86" folder. Navigate to the "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86" folder. You should see both the "winpe.wim" file as well as the "ATIH2013.wim" file listed. Delete the "winpe.wim" file. Rename the "ATIH2013.wim" file to "winpe.wim". Navigate to the "C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Acronis\Media Builder" folder. Double click the "MediaBuilder.exe" file to begin the Acronis Media Builder application. Click "Next". You will be presented with the "Bootable Media Type" selection screen. Click on the pulldown arrow, and choose "Windows PE". Select "Create Windows PE 2.x0 or 3.0 automatically. Click "Next". (The program will copy files in a "command prompt window" and continue. Add any necessary Windows 7 32 bit drivers you need at this point. Click "next" when you a finished adding drivers. Select "ISO image" and click "Next". Select the destination of the "ISO image" and specify a name. I saved my "ISO image" to my "Desktop" and called it ATIH2013DD11v2PE4.iso Click "Next" and then click "Proceed". Acronis Media Builder should mount the ".wim" file, integrate "Acronis Disk Director Home 11 Update 2" into the new ".wim" file, and unmount the ".wim" file and create the "ISO image" to the location you provided. (ie. "Desktop") At this point you can either burn the ISO to a CD/DVD or mount it and copy the contents to a USB flash drive formatted in FAT, FAT32,or NTFS, with the partition on the flash drive set to "Active", and you will have a Windows PE 4.0 bootable CD/DVD and/or a bootable USB flash drive. As I am no expert using either the Windows 7 AIK or the Windows 8 RP ADK, this method produces a bootable CD/DVD or bootable USB flash drive, that runs Acronis True Image Home 2013 and Acronis Disk Director 11 Update 2 at the same time, as well as a WinPE 4.0 command prompt. I'm sure this is not the intent Acronis would like for us to have, but it works fine on my non-EFI based BIOS system. I'm not able to test on a EFI BIOS based system as I don't have access to one yet. If you close either ATIH2013 or ADD11 Update 2, they can both be re-opened from the WinPE 4.0 command prompt from their respective folders on the media by typing in the executable filename, and pressing enter. To undo the changes we made to the Windows 7 AIK folders: Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools" folder. Delete (or move) "X86" folder located in this folder. (I like to save this folder for future use.) Rename the "x86_PE3" folder to "x86". The Windows 7 AIK will be back to normal.(WinPe 3.0/3.1)
